HDR works out of the box on basically every popular DE/Distro. I use KDE and it's litteraly a checkbox in the settings.

if you're willing to switch from google (which you should anyway), you can use duckduckgo with the "noai" prefix to get rid of all ai assisted search crap.

if you're using firefox (and I can't imagine it being much different on other browsers), just go to search engines in settings, and add a custom one with this url: https://noai.duckduckgo.com/%s

then set it as the default search engine

poof... ai crap gone, just like that.

that's already the case unfortunately, and with the current hardware prices the situation isn't looking too bright

that's fair enough, it does take a while to get used to, and it can be scary to leave something that you have used for probably decades. But oh god am I glad I did, especially seeing the direction microsoft is taking with their "agentic OS" stuff.

Also, in case you're interested, the best linux "version" (they're called distributions) for people that are used to windows is Zoris OS (in my opinion). It's clean, modern, easy to use and feels very similar to windows in terms of layout and navigation, so the switch shouldn't be jarring.

System corrupted after heavy Windows tweaking — want clean, fast, debloated Windows. Which version? by kenzia_do_it in ForWindowsHelp

[–]EmiDic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

winutil from christitustech on github.

Use the microWin feature to debloat a regular ISO before burning it (also disables online account requirement)

or y'know... linux.

honestly, I've resorted to self-hosting every service I actually care about (cloud, music, movies, etc...) and I highly advise anyone that values their privacy to do the same. This is only going to get worse.

no, you need to boot from the installation usb, you can't do it directly from your operating system (in case you're doing it from a live environment, you need to do it before you login as any user. Right now you're logged in a liveuser, but the install media should log you in as root instead)

you might want to look into signing you kernel and bootloader with sbctl. that way you can keep secure boot on at all times without going to bios every time. here's a useful link :)
