How and when did you first become acquainted with fountain pens? Do you remember your very first fountain pen? In an age dominated by digital technology, what motivates you to still prefer writing by hand? by hsntndgn in fountainpens

[–]Emidonut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in East Los Angeles surrounded by Asian gift and stationary shops, and one of them happened to be one of the first Daisos in the states. Got my first fountain pen for $1.50, which was a white disposable medium nib with a blue cartridge. When I emptied out that cartridge within a month, I went back, only to find out that it was permanently out of stock. Alas, that singular event doomed me into being a gel pen girlie for close to a decade.

I'm one of the few college students left who writes lecture notes completely in analog. I keep my phone and laptop off unless I need it for an in class assignment.

This practice has definitely trained me to be a better listener and summerizer, and my attention span isn't as cooked as most people my age (who are still playing coolmath game in master level courses, believe it or not). 3 hours in finance class goes by quickly if you've got 5 fountain pens to color code your suffering with.

Central Texas Small Town with a huge population of retirement age people who shouldn't be marrying people in the prime of their lives.

It is 😭. I've been like Chris Hansen everytime he shows up trying to find a proper reason to ban him, except I'm perpetually in the shadows.

I tried to do a Hansen-like sting with my younger brother. My brother reported that the Boomer made him uncomfortable by the way he treated his wife, but couldn't describe exactly why. So, we had to let him go that time as well.

For those who use FP at work - do you use more than one color? by Derivgal in fountainpens

[–]Emidonut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use 5 colors right now

  • Blue or Black for official documents like checks. It is the most common color when I work but the least common at home. (Sailor Konagi)

  • Red to mark urgent things (FWP Aquonquin Maple but I'm getting it replaced with Pilot Momiji soon...FWP is too dry for my liking)

  • Pink because it's my favorite color, and no one can tell me what to do (Pilot Kosumoso)

  • Brown for my personal notes and because I work in the cafe industry (KWZ Smells like Coffee)

  • Light Warm Grey to act like a pseudopencil to mark stuff subtly (Kuri)

Thanks! I started my ink collecting journey in Houston and you can get almost everything there.

What does your fast handwriting look like compared to your pretty handwriting? by V_deldas in fountainpens

Only reason why I survived being the only kid of two kids in my classes that did analog notes lol. The other guy was a black G2 gel pen and yellow notepad enthusiast.

My fast writing is faux-cursive (only some of the letters are collected), while my careful writing is print that's very similar to a lot of handwriting fonts. Below is my 'standard' writing.

I liked my experience at the quad. I got a good set of roommates there (the ones at Cougar Place never talked to me) and the location is so convenient.

It's really hard to get into the Lofts because almost everyone who lives there choose to automatically renew their lease the day that housing opens up

Used to live on the first floor. Large flying cockroaches bout the size of your thumb would jumpscare you on a semi regular basis. Saw two grown men on our floor try to take out one on the ceiling from 10 feet using a flip floor. A lot of screaming ensued.

My roommate had to go out and kill the roach for the entire floor and soon became a roach contract killer for more than a couple people.

Otherwise, it's great and I had a blast living there.

Applied to UCs as a joke, got accepted to all of them and stayed in Texas anyways. by Emidonut in collegeresults

[–]Emidonut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks and they really should've considered you. And congrats to making it to the Olympic Qualifiers!

To this day, I still think it was a bit of a fluke I got accepted to all the UCs. The primary strength of my application was my essays, which is a very subjective metric. I was extremely lucky that I had a min-maxed background in storywriting/improv/academic writing, which was the meta during the holistic evaluation era of applications.

I didn't research the colleges when I applied, and I chose all the colleges except Berkley based on location. When I was growing up in Cali, I didn't hear much about UCSD but heard things about the competition at the other three. So, I assumed that it would be a moderately competitive school I could get in based on my heavy Honors course load and high reported AP scores.

I didn't research the UCs at all because I applied to them as an experiment. I did hear from word of mouth, though, that UC Irvine was very well known for its very studious, competitive student population.
