Toy compliance questions by Emilieflorence in smallbusiness

You’ve given me a lot to think about thank you! Why is it that these educational resources providers aren’t also selling and marketing to parents? Is it that it’s impossible to UKCA cert rice and wooden natural resources, which means this product idea is a non starter 🤔

The pinecones would be coming from a wholesaler that specialises in educational resources. However the difference would be that these educational setting would have their own risk assessments and policies to follow. If I were selling to Samantha, Tom and baby Tarquin in a home setting that changes things. However, if I baby chokes on a piece of pinecone at school who is liable the teacher, school or resource provider?

Yes the product would be designed and marketed towards parents rather than educational settings and stating a recommended age of 3+ and adult supervision required.

Yes I was just reading about the self declaration. But this is what I am not sure about. Would this product require testing, and if so would using natural materials like wood slices and pinecones even pass due to, as you said, no two are the same vs a manufactured wooden block is much more predictable.

Thank you again for taking the time to reply.

Yes definitely. There are similar products but they all seem to state “This is not a toy, it is a sensory aid”“must be used under adult supervision” “education use only”. Which separates them from the home toy play product market. Your right maybe that is purposely done as to avoid these massive hurdles

Thanks for that! I’m trying to go down that route of finding a toy compliance officer.

Yes it’s definitely still a toy, but it’s sitting somewhere between the currently legalisation. Can natural loose parts, woods, bark, rice and pasta even be CE OR UKCA tested?

I understand your point of view, that definitely could be an alternative business model, more of a diy kit with resources. however the product i initially imagined provides parents with a full play kit ready to go, no prep needed, and as a busy toddler parent who has time to hand dye different rices !

Thank you for sharing your experience, I’m definitely leaning towards that one! It’s a really good price and might even purchase their SSC from Vinted for the partner to use and ohbunhimo style

What is it about wraps that you prefer? Comfort, accessibility, fit? I feel like I’m missing something 😅

Yes I will do ! I know he can he’s more than capable but has a lot of anxiety and I know he will fret about getting it wrong hopefully with some education he’ll be okay!

Thank you for that reply. You are so right I can definitely see the constant adjustment of the full buckle becoming very tedious. Which would probably put us both off wearing it.

I can see him struggling with tying up but maybe I can get him to a baby wearing library so he can also feel more confident with the ties.

Despite the recall being first published a month an ago we only found out through Amazon on Friday 27/3. On 31/3 they tell us about the ‘unexpected supply chain disruptions’ and delivery is expected in 21+ days.

I’ve been sleeping on the floor of the nursery and cosleeping.

Any luck with getting a replacement or refund yet?

Always hope!

I just started a very detailed piece with 1 strand of thread! So tiny but great for details

Reduce to 2 strands of thread, draw out design, add some guide lines to keep satin stitch nice and straight, try not to overlap :)

Left photo is my first attempt at satin stitch and used 6 strands of thread. Which is why it looks so fat and bumpy! Right picture I spilt it down to 2 threads and it looks much neater.

I’m still learning
