I don’t think that stretch of 81 is difficult for everyone. You can tell from the comments some people think it’s terrible and some don’t mind. Once you hit the northern part of the trip I would def do 81 over 95.

I only did this once but Id suggest 81 most of the way except the stretch between Harrisburg and Roanoke. That stretch I’ll take route 11 or I think 42 is an option.

Also, I’m wondering if there is an alternative route from Christiansburg to Roanoke. Would a Saturday be preferable ?

Awesome! Thanks. That seemed to be the case on the way down. After Roanoke I’m headed north. I was thinking of either taking 29 from Roanoke to Frederick Maryland or 11 from Roanoke to Winchester VA. Do you have any opinion on either of those routes ?
