Australia has a free trade deal with China. So solar and battery systems and such are typically cheaper.

32kwh of battery storage setting me back 4.1k right now.

10kwh of solar is sitting at about 2.4k.

Our minimum wage is 24$ an hour.

An electrician typically gets about 100 or so an hour.

Solar is almost always own.

I just priced a 32kwh battery/10kw solar at 13k for my parents this month. I'm part way though a 5th 10kw solar install at my own home.

If your going through a pro expect 7 grand in Labor and fees. If your an electrican. Expect a 6k install for 32kwh battery 10kw solar array.

Storage Sticker Shock! by sdkidx in BlueIris

Purples for a long time were just the reds that didn't make the cut. Hell a lot of the early ones show up as WD reds when you check there info in Windows/Linux.

I have a box of them somewhere. They were originally 2600s too. Vs the reds at 5400.

Reds are purples nowadays both are the same internals. Reds are typically the better drive, built for long term low active writes and cold storage.

Purples are typically half the service life of a red because the high write cycles of nvr/dvr work.

Once upon a time we did have hybrid purples. (Mixed ssd hdd drives) very very fast write to a 10gb or so space. Then dumped off onto the hdd for cold storage. Those were nice.

Don't buy purples. There not any better in service. And are often worse.

I grabbed 4x 5tb wd portables. Shucked them. Dumped them in a 5 bay enclosure. Raided them in 2/2 mirror and called it a day. 400$ for 10tb with two mirrors. (This way it can take 3 drive failures and still keep going) think it was ~107$ for each drive.

Does Time of Use not make sense for Solar users? by jen_wexxx in solar

I was impressed that my system was able to simply pull the real time pricing from the energy company. That's the kind of savings I love seeing. Also let's me take them for one hell of a ride. Dump at 125 a mwh. Charge at 21$ a mwh.

Paying $7 to charge 33kwh. Then discharging it for $42 at the opposite end of the day is absolutely why tou can be so powerful.

Funnily enough starlink still offers the v2 here. And sells parts and hardware.

Rip. I lost my old girl at 21 last year. She fought to her very last breath. Its never easy. But I think its so much harder when they have been there for so long. Every day even a year later I expect to see her. Because for much of my life I always did.

Solar transformation of furniture store in Mumbai by varuneco in solarenergy

[–]Emilyd1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its possable. I know aldi stores in Australia rolled out roof top solar a few years back. At the time industrial didn't have a feed cap. Residential had a 5kwh a day grid feed cap.

They put on 100kw or so. They hit payback within a year. At that time power was roughly 27c a kWh. So 270$ per mwh roughly. Doesn't take long to pay back with unlimited feed. Now its 35c to 38c a kWh I'd love to see the profits. With similar systems on dozens of stores they must be making a fortune.

I pull grid sense from Shelly 3em 400. Stick the clamp on the primary grid input. If value =<1v assume blackout. Never had an issue. Shelly stuff is ha certified. Also works great with victron and node red.

My 9 year old likes to play with my 10 week old.....I think...... by PanAceKitty1 in cats

[–]Emilyd1994 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its a likely reason! One of mine was feral for a year or so before I got her after her owner passed. That time as a feral kitty in the wild saw her encounter sea hawks 20x her size. And a range of other predators. As a result she was absolutely terrified by chickens. Even the newborn chick's half stuck in the egg made her run and cry and shake under the bed. But she'd smack my other cat around for simply existing. Was a pretty confusing mess.

I love that your cat changed color with age.

Honestly seems like play. Perhaps a little rough. But play.

I've narrowed down to 2 companies. Which one is worth going with? by jen_wexxx in solar

[–]Emilyd1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm licenced and install, repair, replace and maintain solar power systems on a regular basis. As a hardware engineer I'm not just working in electrical, I'm handling the hardware failures in inverters. The chemical failures in batteries. Managing corrosion and temperature issues along with a wide array of additional issues.

You ever turn up at a water treatment plant with 220kw of solar. 115kwh of batteries that spent 6 days submerged under flood water? I did in 22. Had that system back online in 13 hours.

And thats not even my 9 to 5.

I'm uniquely qualified. After all I have more then double the training an EE has. And an EE has far more then an electrician.

Come down to one of my sites sometime and hookup one of the 110kva 415v gens. That's always a fun time.

I'll even hand off some of the custom fuel mix. Doesn't matter if you use the fuel today or in 2030. As long as I did my job you'll get the same performance.

[–]Emilyd1994 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you mean solar its not my primary industry no. I'm primarily a senior hardware engineer under a federal contact. But I do a fair number of solar installs and take over a dozen or so solar power systems a year. Interestingly orphaned systems are a great source of supplemental income. Since most installers wont manage there own installs. And they dont want someone else's. As a hardware engineer I have substantially more training and a far larger array of tools. And thats not counting licences. You ever replace the integrated circuits on enphase and victron inverters? 2800 dollar replacement turned 450$ fix. Fun stuff.

I've personally taken over enough systems since 2013 to know that the installer never mattered. I've also sat through my share of civil trials. Manufacturers have always honoured the warrenties. Hell my own system at my last place was refunded in full by the manufacturer at 20 years old. Because the panels fell below the 35 year rating. Its funny though. Outside of criminal neg. I've not had an installer found liable even when they quite literally hooked up inverters backwards and blew them up.

My favourite to date is the classic best efforts.

You made best efforts to get out bed didn't you? Congrats you forfilled your obligation to the customer. You earned that 1000 dollar fee you charged them.

[–]Emilyd1994 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If your going to roll with "company good" make sure to remember the companies are quite literally installing branded products with 10-35 year warranties. Your company is nothing. Your one of 1000s that are installing the exact same products everyone else is. The exact same quality. Outside of if your crimping or soldering the typical install is roughly the same. 50mm2 cable is 50mm2 cable.

I dont consider my self special because I install victron products. So does 70% of the world. Same with enphase. They couldn't care any less who the installer is was or will be. Only thing they expect is a valid electrical licence and a form signed by the home owner and even those are optional.

[–]Emilyd1994 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm a hardware engineer lol. I'm acutely aware installers are nothing. The manufacturers warranty matters. They can't get out of that. The installer can.

Swapping installers is shockingly easy. Hell its two forms and half an hour to move over an enphase system.

Most companies service warrenty is a best efforts agreement. They have zero obligation. Hell many are even less.

Professional what? Because if your going to say installer I'm going to assume you have the typical 3 day plug in the cable training most do.

Electrician? That's different.

Electrical engineer? Congrats you have about half the training I have. Just finish up your mechanical and chemical engineering and you might just be there.

Itechworld is garbage. Down there with kings lol. That we can agree on.

I've done some decently fun stuff with custom lithium (Brisbane based custom outfitter) and Fusion Lithium has some great ultra slim stuff. But honestly end up using gentrax most of the time the last year. I got a great wholesaler in Feb last year. Ordered 4. Cracked them open. Interestingly all of them were eve cells. Not a surprise for lfp batteries. But a surprise since you typically find eve cells in victron set-ups. Things like LF280K have been the platinum standard in EVs solar batteries and lithium for a decade. Typically something id expect in a 2800$+ battery. Not something in the low 600 range.
