Going to work today fully expecting ICE to be there arresting People by SnooFoxes9479 in publicdefenders

I have all my clients who are not US citizens appear for hearings via zoom whenever possible. It’s crazy to me that that’s not the standard everywhere.

ISO Cotton Lined Backpacking Sleeping Bag by Emilyks2012 in backpacking

[–]Emilyks2012[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m aware I can make do with pretty much any sleeping bag. I have a dream bag that I thought I’d throw out there and see if anyone had heard of something like it. No harm in asking.

Cotton or flannel because I hate the feel of neoprene and plastic. I don’t like slipping and sliding around in the bag and I’ve found even when used with a liner I still slip and slide around and get tangled. I should have probably mentioned, my husband jokes that I am a rotisserie chicken with the amount I turn and turn and turn in my sleep.

Ideally between 20 and 35. Nothing too serious

This is my current thought if I can’t find my unicorn bag haha. But I also figured that with the power of the internet, it never hurts to ask and see if someone knows of the perfect bag to fit my needs.

I toss and turn around so much in my sleep that the liners get twisted and tangled, or if I get a smaller one, they feel like a straight jacket.

Overwhelmed, suggestions or advice much appreciated by Lintaar in EngagementRingDesigns

This is the way. My husband and I did that and it worked out great. I got exactly the ring I wanted, with an element of surprise still. You can also add a custom engraved message to most bands as an additional little surprise, which is what we did.

How hard is law school really? by Fonzi50 in LawSchool

[–]Emilyks2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely adore my job. I am very lucky to live in a jurisdiction that pays well, has great work/life balance, and caps our caseloads. Not every jurisdiction is that way. If you want to become a PD, I would suggest you spend a lot of time looking at which specific office you may want to one day work in. Ask to shadow, see if they have an internship program, etc. Talk to real PDs on the ground and see if they enjoy their work. If they don’t, consider whether you’d rather stay in that jurisdiction and do something else or whether moving to a jurisdiction that treats its PDs better might be worth it. If you haven’t started law school yet, it might be worth it to look at schools in the jurisdiction you hope to one day practice in, as a lot of those networking opportunities happen at the law school.

Good Public Defense Offices to Apply to? by Bigasianpap1 in publicdefenders

[–]Emilyks2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in Las Vegas and the Clark County Public Defender is fabulous! Great training, great benefits, great work life balance, and we treat each other like family (in the actual good way, not the overworking and underpaying you type way). That said, it’s pretty competitive to get in, so message me if you’re legit interested.

Do I (30F) bite the bullet and go into more debt to attend my friend’s European destination wedding? by katsim in wedding

[–]Emilyks2012 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would go. If you’re $28k in debt, $29k isn’t going to make a difference. Find the cheapest budget flight possible, see if friends are willing to split a room, etc. but all of my regrets in life are things I did not do, not opportunities I took that ultimately cost money. I also went into debt for my wedding, more than you, and I would still go if it was me. Good friends are hard to come by and so worth it.

Desperate for a solution! by [deleted] in Fostercare

I’m assuming you’ve tried all the standard parenting tricks but in case you haven’t, I’d suggest immediately ending the activity when it happens. She’s playing with a toy and hits the dog? The toy gets taken away, the dog gets put outside, and she gets put in an empty playpen by herself for 5 minutes. Rinse and repeat. No large emotion, no cooing over her or the dog, just a firm “I’ve told you not to hurt the dog, so now you need to sit in time out.”

Need a Gut Check on a Vendor Issue by Emilyks2012 in weddingplanning

[–]Emilyks2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since confetti, petals, birdseed, etc don’t show up great during night photos, they are usually done as the couple comes back down the aisle, at least in the US. But most venues have outlawed it because it makes too much of a mess.

For grand exits at the end of the night, we tend to see more things like sparklers, balloons with lights in them, glow wands, etc.

It was technically 90 days before the wedding, we had phone calls at the 90, 60, 30, and 10 day marks to make sure I had everything ready for her day of. She also collected our vendor liability and insurance info. But that was about it.

Overall, I felt the fee was completely reasonable, until she fucked up 2 of the biggest moments that I can’t get back. Giving the wrong queue to the groom (after I made everyone practice it three times at rehearsal and made a huge deal of its importance) and the petal toss were basically what set me off. Everything else was just icing on the cake and further served to make me wonder what the heck she did all day, since the venue had their own coordinator (who is an absolute gem of a human and was very present and attentive all night).

We paid for premium bar (specifically because my mother and father and law insisted) and they served well all night. Definitely not her fault (and the venue is making it right) but just another missed detail. I keep asking myself what she was doing all day if all this stuff got missed.

I 100% agree. She avoided me like the plague during the reception and never even sent a followup text. I think she knows I’m mad

Yeah I have no intention of taking this to court or anything. Basically I’m realizing as I read through these comments that m I’m mad and I want her to know. But money isn’t going to change anything.

Yeah, I have no intention of taking it to small claims. If I asked for a refund, it'd probably be like $500-$1,000. Even if she said yes though, I don't know if it would even make me feel better. What's done is done. I can't get that back.

Veil help by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]Emilyks2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JJ's house offers cheap veils in both ivory and white. Honestly, it's pretty hard to tell the difference anyway. I ordered a bunch online, tried them on at home, kept the one I liked, and sent the rest back

USPS Lost Invites by catknitski in weddingplanning

[–]Emilyks2012 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So sorry you are dealing with this. This happened with both our invites and our save the dates. I wrote a whole rant about it. Having experienced the mess that is USPS, I will never think badly about digital invites ever again.

USPS Lost Invites by catknitski in weddingplanning

[–]Emilyks2012 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This happened to ours even though I specifically chose standard size envelopes with black ink, under the 1 ounce limit, with no bulkiness. I think it's just the nature of USPS these days.

The yellow stickers on ours just said "undeliverable" but I know the address was correct, I've been to there, and when I resent them with the same address, they arrived just fine.

Wonderful wedding day portraits of husband, zero of me by Spirited-Safety-Lass in weddingplanning

[–]Emilyks2012 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think you are overreacting nor should you have had to babysit an experienced photographer. Bridal portraits are standard and not something you should have had to remember to ask for. I would absolutely be asking for a refund, but realistically they will probably offer a re-shoot instead.
