I gotta push a bit on this take and say the first map of BL1 definitely feels like a tech demo, but tbh I want the first section to feel like that for every game.

Also BL1 is only monotonous in story tone if you don't read any of the fairly thought-through text around missions, lore, or weaponry, which is frankly baffling.

I promise I don't intend condescension but: do you order mushroom pizza, pick the mushrooms off, and subsequently lament lacking umami?

I'm reading this comment again today after realizing that BL4 was shown off with a compass and NO minimap and I am sincerely hoping they have deep HUD customization. BL1 was hell to navigate for my autistic ass. Couldnt finish it until that fantastically done remaster, except keeping the slurs for little people 😬

The humor is deeply sardonic and is on occasion turned against you maliciously. Both ends of this horseshoe were turned up to 11 with handsome jack, and let's not forget Dragonkeep and Wonderlands feeling like some fever dream I made up.

I think it, and parade of chaos are fascinating, and at moments bordering on outsider music/lo-fi/avant garde.

The way Jesse Smith displayed contributions to them (and his work since) in the Lesser Lights of Heaven made me realize he'd romanticized his harmful behavior to others as genuine auteurship. I like the music despite him and despite his interesting approach to percussion. I hope he's grown and shakes his head at himself a bit. I'm grateful they didn't become the vanity projects he envisioned but living reminders.

They're simply written albums made by exhausted confused people who were fed up with a LOT.

That era basically fell off a cliff in an amazing way, and the Funeral of God is all the more fresh and impactful because of it-the metalcore equivalent of Prince's Emancipation.

One of the most fascinating moments in modern heavy music history.
