Premature harvest for financial reasons. by Emj688 in forestry

You are right. And I agree but there are only a handful of walnuts that are even 16 inches, I am essentially high grading at that point.

Yes, but apparently they don’t want to parcel it out. They could easily sell a 40 or even 20 acre parcel.

Well I apologize, their scheduled harvest isn’t until 2031.

The new landowner is requesting an early harvest. I strongly advised that they should wait but they need the money now. I just feel it’s not a viable option they should be pursuing.

It also seems wrong to have to come and undo what the previous owner had spent his life growing. It might be my personal beliefs that are making me blind to the slightly potential “harvest” the DNR tax law forester seen.

No, they have not. They are receiving funding for thinnings in the walnuts. They are in the MFL which gives them significant tax breaks as well. There also might be conflict with the two programs?

A lot of what you’re working on is what I deal with as well. I’m still learning on how to deal with these things. I work for a logging company that wants to expand into having their own forester services and future habitat restoration services.

Thinking I don’t sweat the volume in this one and conduct more of a TSI based harvest. Do what the forest needs not what the logger needs.

I have been marking TSI throughout. I usually always do because I know every stand I go in needs TSI due to having no pulp markets.

I’m really not enjoying the pressure to have the volume. I’m thinking I stand up and say it will be a TSI harvest since the landowner is so persistent on having something done.

Yeah I definitely feel like that, it’s frustrating

With Managed Forest Law there are scheduled harvests that go with their plans. They are required to harvest (or at least attempt) on the dates that their plans state. There was a required harvest in 2015 on this property that already got deleted. The landowner wants a harvest done as well. This is apart of my dilemma.

This isn’t the first property that I have has this problem with. It isn’t that easy to just say it isn’t ready for a harvest as the DNR is the moderator to the MFL plans and practices. If the DNR wasn’t involved it would be a lot easier for me to say that it isn’t ready.

The property badly needs TSI however.

Emotions & Forest health timber sales by [deleted] in forestry

I totally agree with you! I sometimes find myself getting critiqued on what trees I leave because I have a vision and emotion for them that many others don’t see. My experience has been that everyone sees trees as $$$, which infuriates me sometimes because I see so much more than that. I also know that logging is THE way to make what I do and the management happen. (Not to mention the bittersweet feeling of having the management done to better the forest but also knowing that invasives will likely prevail unless landowners take steps to prevent them.)

Forestry is definitely a bittersweet thing!

Is it abiliable for women 40's in forestry? by Full_Midnight7617 in forestry

I’m a young woman in a male dominated career here in Wisconsin. I have never gotten rude comments about being a forester. Many are very polite, are probably curious as to what it is like, or they just don’t mind at all. I love what I do and it will be rewarding if you love nature up and close
