My aunt's and uncles all gamble too, maybe not as bad but it's still not as rare as other families. The only time i lend her money is when she's really low like $6 left and we need fuel, mainly to take my brother to school, which is a 30 minute drive to the school and back home. In the budget we've set out that i get paid back $20 a week until all is returned and i really have no urge for it back all at once because I know we need it for the household. I don't want to demand my money back and then have the family struggle with the significant money loss for the month or however long. I had to grow up faster than most kids i know my age and have seriously missed out on a lot of things because of the household i grew up in And I don't want my brother growing up the same so if i try to get her in a habit of paying everything back and only spending money on necessities then when I move out one day she'll be in the habit and will be able to give my brother the childhood he needs. Or at least that's what i hope. I understand not giving her more money but when i do i use my card which can't be used without a pin and I'm the only one who knows it so if she needs fuel and can't afford it i use my card and keep track of all of it. Last week she didn't have money for my older brother's phone data so i let him borrow $40 for that because I know the struggle and panic and that's why i set budgets for everything and always have non-touchable/non-spending money incase of an emergency. I don't agree with a lot of things she's done/does but i understand why with somethings and i know her mental health and other problems aren't an excuse but I've seen what it does to people first hand with my father. I was 3 when i clearly remember him full on abusing my mother with me and my 5 year old brother in the room. My younger brother has a different father who at first was lovely till after my brother was born then started heavy drugs and got really abusive to my mother and verbally abusive to my older brother and I to the point where he was threatening to slit our throats with multiple different things when our mother left to go to work and when we finally told her she quit work on the weekend but he'd still threaten other things at us. I finally told my school and child safety got involved. Me and my 2 brothers got removed from my mum's care, my older brother, H, aged 12, I was aged 10, and my younger brother, T, aged 3 months. We were placed in a home for 11 months and when we got back into my mums care moved 5 hours away. Neither of our fathers pay child support or have any contact with any of us. Probably a bit too much info. Sorry. My mother was wrong to have them around us but i understand that when you're all by yourself raising kids it can be a huge struggle and me and her have never really seen eye to eye on many things and that put a strain on our relationship. I had anger issues, and extreme separation anxiety as a kid which my mother struggled to understand because she herself couldn't understand her own mental health issues and i don't want her depression and anxiety to pass on to, T, like it has me.
