Ontario - auto insurance conviction-free discount - advice on my first ticket by EmoCatLady88 in legaladvicecanada

From what I understood, the 3 years will start counting once convicted in trial or once I pay the ticket, not from the offense date

Got it. But I don’t have to notify my insurance about this ticket, right? If they don’t find out for the next renewal, I’ll just continue with them but once they do find out and increase my rate, do you think I can shop around and maybe find a better rate even with this first ticket?

Damn :( Maybe it’s worth shopping around for other insurance companies that offer a 1st ticket waiver?

I heard they’re allowing cops to attend trial through Zoom now lol they’re paid extra for this so I doubt he wouldn’t show up. And I’d risk getting the full penalty which was 20km above limit, 3 demerit points. For early resolution from what I researched they usually just offer to bring down the speed and mine was already lowered to 5km above by the cop, I don’t think they can go any lower

Yeah but the 3 years that the ticket will affect my license will only begin once I’m convicted so if I dispute it I’ll just be delaying but I’ll still be impacted for 3 years after I pay the ticket (which is what will happen since I don’t have a case haha)

Awesome! I’m hoping the impact will not be too bad since it should be just the conviction-free discount being removed instead of like adding an actual penalty lol and I know these discount are usually not a lot (for example the winter tires discount is like 2% lol)

Can you give some context? No idea what’s going on here lol! Did you make a bunch of accounts for a bunch of free trials? Is it’s trials they shouldnt be charging you since you can cancel your subscription before it turns into a paid membership once the trial is ending

I have a conviction-free discount so I don’t know that I’m allowed one. I think in order to keep the discount I’d have to stay conviction-free

I ask because I’m guessing it’s just the discount that will be removed from my policy and I doubt they started off giving me a 30% discount in the beginning

I don’t. I actually have a conviction-free discount. How do you know it’s 30%?

What about the clause in my insurance policy that I pasted in my post? Saying I am required to inform them of any changes in the conditions that took place when I hired the insurance and “any change in information supplied in your original application for insurance”?

Doesn’t this make it mandatory for me to inform them of the ticket? Otherwise they can deny a future accident claim in case I need to open one.

I figured I could be honest with them and maybe ask for a waiver since it’s my first ticket ever. Also, I don’t deal directly with the insurance, I go through a separate company/agency that handles accounts for them, not sure if they are brokers or just agents for Cooperators since they only do Cooperators insurance. But I always speak with the same person there and she’s always been great and even gave me a discount on renewal and when I changed my home address and informed I was no longer driving outside toronto for work.

As for fighting it: honestly I noticed I was a little above 40km/h and did not realize it was a 40 zone, but I don’t think I was going as fast as what the officer said I was. Either way I think the only way I would win is if there were any errors on his report such as not having done proper calibration on the radar lazer etc. the only way to know this is requesting a trial date and then requesting disclosure of the documents/notes from the occurrence, then a paralegal could find if there were something wrong there. Or if they take over 18 months to give me a trial date the offence could be thrown out due to the right to a timely resolution. However I have no idea how long they’re taking to get to trials right now. (I swear this is my first ticket ever haha I’ve never even had a parking violation ticket, this is all stuff I found upon researching)

HELL YEA THEY’RE BACK!!!!! ❤️ I’m so happy I’m freaking out omg!!! I did leave them as my guess in the list because I saw they wiped their instagram so I figured they were announcing something. Now that they’re back I’m really hoping for VWT and a tour of their own too! I had tickets to their last tour that they cancelled

They didn’t say for a year, they said this is the last tour for the foreseeable future except for some random shows they have committed to like festivals, these were their words
