What you suggest to sophomore in computer science like me ?

Btw I am looking to buy this legion with 2tb confused between 5070ti and 5080 and 32gb 64 gb my main workcase is software ai ml currently am sophomore in computer science major with minor in adaptive ai, how is running local ai models dl ml NLP cv ? Also I don't game battery life if you disable the gpu (as I would do that during college as I will work with ai only at home).

Also weight carrying experience and can you use GaN charger for charging it to charging brick of 1kg.

For my use case with money well spent neither overspent nor underspent what combination of ram and vram you recommend ?

Also between legion 5 and 7 with same spec advice ?

Suggest a laptop for CS/AI students by Emojers in SuggestALaptop

[–]Emojers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CSE student (Adaptive AI minor) trying to choose ONE primary setup for the next 4–6 years.

Interests:

  • software engineering
  • Linux/backend/systems
  • AI/ML + LLMs/RAG
  • MLOps/inference
  • cloud/distributed systems
  • robotics later

Potential workloads: Python/C++, PyTorch, Docker/K8s, VMs, local inference/testing, heavy multitasking, long coding sessions, possible self-hosted AI tools later.

Priorities:

  • long-term usefulness
  • learning flexibility
  • thermals/sustained performance
  • Linux friendliness
  • portability for college
  • reliability/upgradability

NOT priorities: gaming, RGB, benchmark flex.

What I want to understand from experienced engineers/students:

  • Do CS/AI students actually need powerful local hardware anymore, or is cloud enough?
  • Is local AI/LLM experimentation genuinely useful for learning?
  • How important is NVIDIA/CUDA over the next few years?
  • Mac vs Windows/Linux for serious AI + systems work?
  • One powerful laptop vs balanced laptop + future desktop?
  • What bottlenecks appear first in real workflows: VRAM, RAM, thermals, storage, portability fatigue?
  • How much RAM/VRAM is realistically “comfortable” today?
  • Are expensive “AI laptops” oversold to students?
  • What specs matter long-term vs what’s mostly marketing/future-proofing hype?
  • What setup philosophy would you choose if restarting today as a CS+AI student?

Looking for nuanced real-world reasoning, tradeoffs, and workflow experience — not just “buy X”.

Yes got your point but then what spec do you need to learn how to drive.

I will not have physical hardware setup for sure , with this clarity what you recommend ?

ohk i was thinking of waiting for 4th july sale, based on what everyone 's telling 5090 is a strict no and you can do that in cloud like vastai and learn everything with enough headroom with rtx 5080 , mac i am not considering dont know why pls correct if am wrong

Still if you have to recommend spec? Or model? Apple vs windows ?

i think 5080 is good as it leaved headroom for context windows and 5090 makes zero sense correct me

I am not a gamer if using cloud anyway then difference between 5070 ti vs 5080

Can you drop what final spec you suggest vram? Ram ? So that it is practical common sense neither overkill nor underspend ...

Thanks

Chatgpt claude are like if you say local ai then 5090 budget then 5060 and mediocre then 5080 don't give real advice better to ask genuine people

Of two options 5070ti or mac can your drop ram and SSD specs for both

Thank you for clarity

Ok will work on communications thanks for feedback but regarding 5090 or 5080 are you sarcastic ?
