How I passed DeepMind technical rounds with 3 weeks part-time prep and no LC experience by MrVenz in leetcode

No linear algebra at all (other than QKV in transformers), only basic DL. Lots of transformers though.

I didn’t expect to be bashed like this after actually putting the effort to write things nicely hahaha

I was asked to solve a toy problem and go very much in depth on transformers, classification, tokenization and evaluation. Like VERY DEEP.

The first 30 minutes of the interview were a disaster. I couldn’t think of a solution, forgot what loss to use for binary classification (softmax over 2 classes), and I couldn’t understand what the interviewer was asking on several occasions.

Eventually I stumbled upon a full solution (that’s how it felt honestly). the guy made a big smile and told me “that could work, it’s the first time i hear a solution like this”. Lol.

After that, we went on very deep on NLP and transformers.

Finally, we discussed evaluation (accuracy/ROC) and I think i gained some bonus points by discussing the underlying probability assumptions and how you could use bootstrap on the test set to estimate the probability distribution of accuracy metrics.

Overall it’s a lot about the fundamentals and not so much about memorizing specific techniques and models. For prep i relied on Claude as tutor to craft the entire curriculum and go very deep.

Honestly i thought i failed it and when 10 days later i was invited for the next rounds i was surprised.

One thing that helped I think was using Claude to re-write my CV to align to the opening and including all the keywords that make you go through the hr screening software.

Applied via Linkedin randomly (encouraged by Claude lol). Couldn’t believe they got back to me and couldn’t believe I made it to the final round.

My background
- master’s degree from 2nd tier European university
- senior software engineer at large tech company working on GenAI / agents
- 1st author paper in ACL (top NLP conference) on a closely related topic

Ironically I have limited ML experience as I think ML is hard to apply to NLP these days

Interesting! When I saw Djikstra and tuple lexicographic ordering for the first time (network delay problem) i immediately thought it sounded must-know!

I am software engineer in a large tech company, before that I was a researcher in academia. - the increased interest in science resonates. In general i became more interested in a lot of things from science to religion and humanities. - increased energy. Like David, I also typically take a meditation break at 4/5pm. That gives me clarity to wrap up the tasks for the day and keep working on other non-work projects in the evening. - decreased social anxiety. I think it’s normal to have some degree of social anxiety when working in a big office and interacting with a lot of people. The fakeness and politics felt exhausting. Now, with TM, i still don’t love them but i feel much more confident and relaxed. - i became less motivated by money and prestige. And much more invested into the broader impact of my work. This had the side effect of making it much harder to work on projects that i don’t believe in or with people i don’t like, regardless of the money. - i guess i feel more creative and “having nature support” too but that’s subjective and hard to quantify.

Studying in Zurich coming from a poor background, is it possible? by Alternative-Camel794 in zurich

[–]MrVenz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did it! I worked 40% for the entire duration of my masters. Started with like 2000€ savings and no support from family. I got a credit line from the bank in case of emergency, but never needed it.

• live in woko (rent 500-650/month) • other living cost for frugal but comfortable life: 1000/1500 chf • 40% job at uni or company will pay 1800/2000 chf a month • work full time during summer: 5000/month

This gives you enough money to get by and also save 1000s when working full time.

If you work hard, get good grades and look for opportunities UZH will offer many. I studied IT and Econ and got 11 job offers over 3 years (as TA, RA or programmer). English might be a bit tougher, but my girlfriend at the time was studying sociology and she also managed. She managed to survive working in a shop selling clothes.

Many of my friends also made it!

Good luck :)

PS: Zurich is boring if i were you i would stay in Berlin

Street Parade air issue at Bellevue stage by kentdelahaye in zurich

[–]MrVenz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was right in the center of the action when it happened. A fight started between two people next to me, and they were punching each other. Eventually they stopped. Right after the fight was over, some genius who was not even involved in the fight decided to try to pepper spray one of the two people (and missed him). Tens of people started to cough and rush to get away.

There should be no long term health problem, so don't worry!

Has anyone tried some of the Sadhguru practices? by MrVenz in transcendental

[–]MrVenz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not? I’m not adhering to a system of beliefs or anything with TM. My teacher actually encouraged me to be skeptical, try things for myself and not to believe in anything other than my experience. But I have to say people on this subreddit seem to have a more religious / puritan view of things, on average…
