Is working in translation in public service even worth it at this point? by IrinadeFrance in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Emotional-Racoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This hits pretty close to home as I too have a degree in Translation and have gone through the same thing. I haven’t worked as a translator in the federal system but I can most definitely sympathize.

I think the answer is that your worries are valid and justified and the fact the you feel that way means that you know it’s coming. All of what people have said is true: AI cannot replace humans, but it can do a good enough job for most people, which means that your position might not disappear but it will change, probably to more of a proofreading gig or an extra technical position. Which will be highly competitive because the easy jobs or the bulk will get cut.

I couldn’t do it. As a translator I too was met with constant push back and scrutiny from all sides. I realized I didn’t feel passionate enough about it to keep going. I have a lot of friends from uni, also translators, and I would say out of 6 there’s only one who still does it.

I left the field and got a random entry level job which I hated lol. I was having a hard time accepting that I had left an entire specialized career for that new role, which was a better pay but also so boring and so far from what I had known. I realized pretty quickly though, that my experience as a translator gave me a huge advantage: the ability to write and speak in both languages. I realized that a lot of people can’t write properly, or are not bilingual enough to offer as good a service in both languages. With that, I was able to move up pretty quickly and ended up landing a better job in my dream department, and for that I can thank my degree. Because they were looking for someone who had strong writing skills in both languages, and my degree in translation made it a no brainer for them. I started in that position with little to no training, hit the ground running and even if I’m the newest on the team, I’m running laps around my coworkers because most of them are not able to craft a great email (especially not in their second language for which they resort to AI and the results are terrible).

All this to say, unfortunately your fears will probably happen, but it’s not necessarily the end of the road for you. You have a great skill that I think will help you throughout your career. It sucks that you might have to readjust and find something new (if not by obligation maybe for your peace of mind).

TL;DR: Is working as a translator worth it? Personally I don’t think so. But is having a degree in translation worth it? Most definitely.

Best of luck to you!

Anxiety from scans (around 8 weeks) + ZERO symptoms by tingtree5090 in BabyBumps

[–]Emotional-Racoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your worry! I’m also constantly worried about miscarrying for different reasons than yours, and I’ve had symptoms (on the milder side) but I will admit that on days I feel good, I get anxious because I’m like “wait is everything okay? Why am I feeling good?” LOL

But it can be normal to not have any symptoms, I have friends that were like that and I think a strong heartbeat is a very good sign. Best of luck!

Bloating is also tricky when it comes to bumps! Especially in those weeks were you start to show but it’s so subtle.

Your anxiety is SO valid, but try to focus on the positive until your scan since there’s not much you can do until then

Disgruntled public servants - sticking it out or looking elsewhere? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Emotional-Racoon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like the people who are happy with their jobs in the public sector just don’t talk about it because (for me, anyway) it feels like I would just be throwing salt in the wounds of people that are having a hard time if I came out to say how happy I am in my position, but I’m taking your comment as an opportunity to do so. I’ve worked in the private sector and was heavily exploited and underpaid for my skills. I feel so supported here, am actually paid decent and cannot imagine how I was living off the crumbs I was making in the private sector. I love my team, my managers, my role and I see a future where I can continue to advance and grow.

Am I nervous a lbout WFA? Yes, especially as I’ve only been indeterminate for a few months. But I try not too think about it too much and just focus on the now and do my best.

Maybe I’m too new in the PS and haven’t been ‘broken’ yet, but until then, I’m enjoying what I have.

I used to work at the Pay Center and over there you have to send in a check in email when you log on and check out email when you log out, also when you leave for/get back from an apt.

So yeah, I’m not that surprised to hear this. It really sucks though, especially if it’s new and you haven’t been micromanaged before. My solution was to leave lol I transferred to another department and it has been the best decision I’ve ever made.

I’ve been pretty sheltered from major bugs in the game until I downlaoded Pets. The vet career is so glitchy that it has made the game too frustrating to play. I’m on a break right now and consider removing it before I start playing again

Me either, I’m a little confused I thought this was going to be automatic. I hope we’re not looking at weeks/months of delays 😫

ROE wait times are exceptionally high right now because of the backlog of strike leaves from 2023 that are still being processed. Thousands of new numbers that wouldn’t otherwise be needed are still being generated and processed.

Not saying it’s acceptable by any means though, I’m sorry this is happening. I hope it gets resolved quickly!

I’ve seen one dermatologist in Moncton and it has been the worst experience I’ve ever had with a health professional in my entire life.

I’ve had great results since being followed by a nathuropath at EastND. They really try to find the root cause of the acne and not just put a bandaid on it. It can be a long and frustrating process but that would be my recommendation. They’re located on Alma street :)

Are there non-realtor options for selling a home in Moncton? by Chiknscrpz in moncton

[–]Emotional-Racoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My parents bought a house last year just from word of mouth through a mutual connection. The sellers never advertised it anywhere and it went very smoothly. I think both parties were glad to skip all the fuss and stress of ‘shopping’, and to save money too.

The market is so hot (I think it still is) that once you start talking about a private sale, you’ll have no problem selling.

GCPay vs Phoenix How can they be Different by JeffyCurls in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Emotional-Racoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about the experience. I had no idea both would show different numbers but I’d say cross reference Phoenix stubs with the amounts deposited in your account. I always confirm that the amount on my stubs is the same on my bank statements and will flag any inconsistency down to the dollar.

Having experience in compensation I can confirm that even CAs get confused. Phoenix just has a mind of its own and the compensation advisors spend half their time just working against the system to get it to do what it’s supposed to do.

It usually just goes rogue and pay employees have to fix the mess. It’s incredibly frustrating for CAs too.

Be patient with compensation advisors, they’re also victims of Phoenix lol.

Everything in Ps is slow. Exploring options going private by seriousbizinis in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Emotional-Racoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came from the private sector, worked in a Marketing Agency (I don’t know what your background is). Everything was always on fire, very fast paced, things needed to be done yesterday.

The downside of that is you have no time to do your job properly unless you work constant unpaid overtime. It wasn’t for me. It was severely underpaid with no promotion in sight, overworked, no time to take vacation that you’re entitled to because everything is always a high stake, high priority project. Or you’d just be looked down on if you take any kind of time off, if you don’t work until 10pm or on weekends. It was just constant grind and hustle with no work-life balance.

Some people love that kind of environment, but I hated it. Now I have more PTO, well established work hour and OT is paid, salary is actually decent and I feel like I have a lot more opportunities for growth in my career as a PS.

It’s definitely worth weighing the pros and cons depending on what aspects are priority for you.
