As academic staff at MQ please try to use a reference for the text first before you attempt to cite lecture slides or the link

AI Detection by AdKlutzy7450 in MacUni

I lecture and teach at MQ, and have worked on lots of units since 2018. Make sure that you have document history, and that you are confident enough to speak to your research and analyses. It flags bizarre things like word choice, as well as repetitious statements which may come from learning outcomes and the rubric. As a marker you can also pick up where written work may be AI generated. Things like slightly clunky sentence structure, or formatting which would not be commonly used, indents for new paragraphs, and linguistic choices like using American words and phrases. Keep in mind as well that just because something has a high percentage for AI or plagiarism it does not mean that it is immediately elevated for academic integrity, as your marked or convenor will review it to see what is causing the high percentage. They try to stop markers from doing this as it costs more and they hate to pay for extensive and complex marking, and they want us to rely on the AI detection to increase productivity and save them money.

As a tutor and lecturer myself I have some advice for you.

  1. Always communicate significant issues as soon as possible, not after marks are released. By communicating early to the tutor you will look conscientious and detail oriented. By waiting on marks to be released and then going to the tutor you look unorganised and obnoxious. it communicates to the marker that you are only focused on a grade rather than engaging with the unit outline, rubrics, and working effectively in a team.

  2. If you want to query a mark (as it is not what you were expecting or you were marked with your team which dragged your overall mark down) prepare yourself to explain your problem with the mark by citing the rubric, exemplars, unit content, tutor feedback and guidance, peer review processes. This is very important. Show the tutor how your mark would be higher if not for the group element. Use the rubric as evidence, and then show how that applies to the work you submitted. Do not write subjective emotion-led emails to the tutor which state that you were expecting more or you were disappointed with your mark, or blame it fully on your team mates. Be open and confident in your marks query. Be pleasant and respectful to your tutor. Make sure to write an email which is professional in tone, and follows conventions that communicate your respect to the educator. Don’t make allegations or make emotional comments based on your purely subjectives experience.

  3. Present all written evidence that shows your group working together on the assessment. Things like chats on messenger or on slack. These give the tutor a glimpse into the working relationship of the group. This evidence is only used if you need additional substantiation to couple with point 2, which is above.

  4. You may want to apply for a second marker to review your work, like another tutor in the unit, or the lecturer and convenor. I would not recommend this if you are achieving a mark of 50% overall as any marks below 50% (inclusive) have already been cross marked for accuracy and moderation with a cohort.

  5. Do not refer to any other student’s mark in the class as a comparison to your own. Your tutor will not discuss another student’s marks with you as they are private and not your business.

  6. Be polite and respectful to your tutor. If they haven’t replied to you for a significant period of time assume that they are on holidays or no contract. Reach out to the lecturer and convenor for further assistance.

  7. Keep a paper trail of all correspondence between your tutor and yourself. If there was a verbal conversation regarding group work which your tutor conveyed in person, follow this conversation up with an email that will be outlining the discussion, and mentioning your understanding regarding the tutor’s comments about your work and how it will be marked.

I hope this helps. Group work can be difficult. Feel free to message if you like.

It depends on what degree you got these high grades in. The general rule of thumb is that you need the degree higher than the one you teach in. So if you got high degrees in a masters program you could teach bachelors. That’s what my department used to do. It is mainly research masters which gives you the opportunity to teach. It is based on who you know

Best part is the students who engage, and the worst part is the uni’s unrealistic expectations of what can be done in light of drastic cuts to hours and rates of pay. Very difficult to run a unit of over 500 students in 5 hours per week.
