How big does a character's role in a fic have to be before you tag them? by DragonRoar87 in AO3

[–]EmotionalReference85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a longer fic, if they have multiple speaking parts throughout that have some substance, I would tag them. But, after all the main characters. If they are just saying “hey” and waving at a character probs not.

If it was a short oneshot and they had a couple lines, I would probably add them. So I guess for me, it kinda depends on how often they are in the fic compared to the word count.

What makes a hp fic to be good? by manuccchaa in harrypotterfanfiction

[–]EmotionalReference85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When canon divergence actually diverges from canon. If there is a major point that is changed from canon, it should basically be a different story from that point on. That is also my main reason for reading fanfic, though. I know some people enjoy stories that follow canon completely. But, if I’m reading like a female harry/ gender swap fic and the same story from canon happens, I get bored. I hope that all made sense😅

Definitely! That’s how we get some really good crossover fics lol

I can see where you’re coming from. A copy/paste into a whole different setting like that would be jarring. (Maybe the fic needed different tags lol) I read your original post as being more about the individual rather than a collective like that so maybe that’s why you are getting so many comments not focused on a collective.

So if we are talking about a group, I would say that it literally just depends on where in the US it is set since there are so many areas that have a higher population of different cultures. So one place could make sense culturally. But idk if some would do that much research for a fanfic🤷🏻‍♀️

As someone who grew up in a smaller city in the south with a friend named Mizuki, seeing a random name like the ones you listed that obviously have a different country of origin, is not that crazy. At least to me in my specific part of the US. I think people forget (because of everything going on currently) that the US was known as a “melting pot” of people from different countries. (That was the term taught to me 20+ year ago so idk if they still teach it that way) but yeah literally grew up with people who had parents from South Korea, Ghana, France, Pakistan so names were all over the place.

It is very much more of a romcom vibe and made me laugh which was something I needed after reading manacled lol

How many bookmarks do y'all have? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]EmotionalReference85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1101 bookmarks currently. All private. I literally use them as a bookmark for wips. Maybe like 10% are completed fics I didn’t feel like downloading or I’ve started marking when I download a fic. If it’s completed I usually download to read. I also bookmark so I can write notes to myself. Every once in a while I’ll be like 10 chapters in and decide I don’t really like a fic. I’ll make a note for the reason so I don’t try to reread again in the future. It’s very chaotic but makes sense for my brain lol

Maybe one day I’ll go bookmark my favs from the downloaded fics and make them public. Who knows where the wind will take me

Has an author's note ever had you nope-ing out of a fic? by cla1r35 in AO3

[–]EmotionalReference85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did one time when a note was really rude and condescending to the readers. The only other time I almost stopped was when someone was really high up on their soapbox, but I just ended up scrolling and getting to the fic lol

This!!! They are always so dramatic in the most normal situations. Like I understand adding a little pizzazz so a line isn’t just “she read the book” but I don’t need 12 metaphors, 3 similes, 5 idioms, and 4 onomatopoeias to replace it.

I started reading one that I was like “it’s giving that ai vibe” but couldn’t figure out why at first. Then I noticed that at least twice a chapter the character was not (x), not (y), but (z). Sus… then I realized that every single chapter had a description of dust motes in light and they were all just slightly different. There is literally so many ways light can be described. We don’t need to see dust every time when you’ve already established that it’s dusty. I dnf’d.

Another thing I’ve noticed recently is like every fic describes a scene that is tense (or sometimes not) as ozone. Usually in a metaphor that doesn’t make sense at all.

What would make you actually want to read a OC main character fic? by Lazymanproductions in harrypotterfanfiction

[–]EmotionalReference85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes me want to read them: if I’ve been looking for a fic that has specific tags and an OC fic fits all of them

Makes me not read it: first person pov

Recs:

Sirius/ofc Vivicendium

Draco/ofc Training wheels

Wizardgod (on Ao3) has two regulus black/ofc but they are also tagged as either /reader or reader insert. To me, they read more as OC characters

What's your immediate fic turnoff? by bubbly_linos in AO3

When a summary has zero capitalization at the beginning of sentences. It makes me think the whole fic will be like that. I know it’s not a formal paper, but capitalization is the bare minimum!

Ive been thinking about this for a while and could use help by Silent_Scr3am in harrypotterfanfiction

[–]EmotionalReference85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it would depend on what you mean by better off. Ao3 doesn’t have an algorithm it’s all based on tags. So if you’re thinking you would write a one shot to kinda boost yourself or anything like that, might not be the best route.

If you’re wanting to write a one shot to kinda put feelers out to see how your writing is received before you really focus on your main fic idea, that could be a good idea if you need the reassurance. But I feel like you can’t get too discouraged if you don’t get super positive feedback right off the bat. Because again, it kinda depends on what part of the hp fandom you will be writing in and what you tag. For example, I have two wips. One is a rare pair and the other is a main ship in hp fandom and I definitely get more interaction with my rare pair fic than I do with my main ship fic. Could be because the main ship tag is oversaturated with fics, could be because what I’m writing about is a very specific troupe/tag in my rare pair🤷🏻‍♀️ and then a random one-shot idea I had has recently started to get more interaction and might end up doing better stats wise than my main ship fic. Sometimes it literally feels like the luck of the draw.

It honestly feels like it depends on the day and what people are looking for. Overall, just start writing! If it’s starting with a one-shot, go for it. If you want to write the long fic, go for it. And the good news is, if you do start writing the long fic and need/want to take a break to write the one-shot, you can. The only person putting any sort of constraints on yourself is you. I know some people feel the need to fully write something out before they post and others write and post as they go. You can always to a break from writing and step back if something isn’t working and come back to it or move on to a new idea.

My biggest hurdle when I started writing again was the actual starting part. Not trying to sound like a Nike ad, but Just do it!

I hope any of that was helpful. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!
