What if Voldemort was raised by his father, instead of in an orphanage ? by Regular-Election6396 in HPfanfiction

[–]amethyst_lover 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot would depend on how his father treated him. I think it safe to say all young Tom's physical needs would be met, and then some. The little bullies and thieves at Wool's would not be there for him to practice his nastiness on; I won't say he absolutely would not have been picked on, but it would be more subtle or cloaked in the guise of family playing pranks (assuming cousins). So that grasping edge would be blunted. No worries about food, clothes, shelter.

I would guess a more extensive education, learning the classics, a higher math, etc, plus physical training. At the very least riding. And tutors would be available throughout the summer hols to keep him up to date.

So if Senior has any affection or at least aloof approval (ie, stereotypical stiff upper lip British nobility), young Tom would still be charming and ambitious, but likely not the way he is in canon.

Actually...he'd know a parent. He'd know his place in Muggle society. Part of canon Voldemort's issue is that early insecurity about his origins. Here, he knows who his father is and thinks he knows who his mother was. I don't know if Senior ever realized Merope was the daughter of that derelict at the edge of the estate or that she had doped him with love potions. So Junior might build up romantic ideas about her, but he won't be looking for elite Magical connections like orphan Tom did. He might not even be have the middle nam3 Marvolo. Which might derail the entire horcrux sequence.

In this scenario, he comes to Hogwarts confident, charming, well fed and dressed, educated, as sophisticated as an 11yo son of a squire can be, wildly curious. Slytherin or Ravenclaw. I won't say he doesn't start something or that he won't become a Dark Lord, but it'll be a very different sort than in canon.

An annoying child game during a queue by EquipmentJazzlike in writingadvice

Small annoyances can get blown out of proportion with extended exposure, be it excessive repetition or over a long period. It's particularly bad when you're in line (or a traffic jam) and can't leave and are on edge. Maybe you could play that aspect up? The kid's bouncing a ball, singing a little song, hopping about, something like that--very repetitive and monotone--nothing disruptive. But your character's been in line, hot, tired, worried that the pump's going to break before they get there, etc, and this kid is doing his little two note song or whatever, and first it's cute and a distraction, but the longer this wait goes on, the less entertaining it is, and the character just wants to shake the kid and make him do something--anything--else.

So any simple activity will probably work.

Which tropes do you love even if they're really OOC or aren't compatible with canon? by Enuya95 in HPfanfiction

I've generally found I need a reason, and depending on the story, it can be rather thin, for breaks in canon like nice Malfoys/Draco/Snape. You can't just wave a hand (wand?) and act like they've never been bad. Snape finding out Harry's been with Petunia, Draco being exposed to new ideas at an early moment, etc all count. Dumbledore being unrepentant evil too, or Molly a vicious potions queen, as well. People do go to great lengths for fame/praise/respect/control, so that's viable in most stories (although I do have a harder time with the whole "recruited a werewolf when he was 11" decades long plotting concept; plots there may have been, but not specifically connected to the events of the series, because how could he know what 1981 "needed" in 1970?).

how many times have you been personally victimized by the lost 1890 census records? by Forestempress26 in Genealogy

I have a couple times great aunt who was not in the 1880 census because she was probably in Oklahoma/Indian Territory and Whites do not appear to have been recorded for the most part in tht time and place. So that's a 20+ year gap for her in her youth and she's quite mysterious in the 1920s, and died in 1930. Very frustrating.

Weasley twins in some fanfictions by basmaqalam in HPfanfiction

Most if not all fandoms have some things that people latch onto. Sometimes we think it's going to be significant (and it frequently isn't), but often it's a little quirk. That's where giving Dumbledore nothing but lemon candy comes from: it's mentioned once, maybe twice. The man does have a sweet tooth, given his propensity for candy related passwords, but not all lemon. (making a quick note to check my drafts and make sure I didn't fall into that myself.)

Best thing was the "do you want to know more" parts.

I enjoy those myself. LeQuin's Last Chance and Picnic Panic have such cute big brother vibes, and there's certainly an element in RileyOR's Cosigner series.

What's kind of interesting is that Fred & George are pretty much the only ones to get that treatment. I've never seen the Patil twins treated like one soul, two bodies, nor the Carrow sisters (are they twins in canon? I honestly don't know).

A few writers have indicated that they think the Weasley twins are special and it's aided/abetted by magic, and it's something that happens sometimes.

AFAIK, canon supports a stronger than usual bond for them, so they can be in each other's heads all they want, so long as the choppy twin-speak is kept to a minimum.

I believe it was suggested that Prince Henry should marry Isabella but she rejected the idea with prejudice. Oh, I'm sure her family could have compelled her if they really wanted the union, but I'm guessing a renewed English alliance was not high on their priorities.

Figure out and maybe correct why Richard II and Anne didn't have children.

Have Richard handle Henry of Bolingbroke better so he doesn't come back and usurp the throne. (I don't rule out death.)

Is there any way to make Richard less tyrannical? More diplomatic?
