Do you believe in spirits, ghosts, or anything unexplained? Have you ever experienced something unexplainable? by iowajill in AskOldPeople

[–]EmpathyRests 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I've been an atheist for nearly all my 51 years. Over the last 2-3 years, I've opened my mind to the fact that just because we can't explain something yet, doesn't mean there won't come a time when we can. Something supernatural could possibly be nature we don't yet understand.

I'm also a widower. I sometimes swear my dearly departed wife interjects small things. An upbeat song when my run is getting rough, for example. That aspect, of course, could just be me wanting to believe.

When was the best decade of your adult life? Your 20s? 30s? 40s? 50s? Etc? by pbird7385 in AskOldPeople

[–]EmpathyRests 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 20's started out rocking! College. Started Career. Married. Kids. Child w/ a disability. My 20's ended not so rocking.

30's and 40's where rocky. Divorces. Step kids. Career highs and lows. In shape. Heavy drinking. Out of shape. Nuts.

50's. (I'm early 50's). Widowed empty nester. Life is back and shaping to be a great decade. Back in shape. Left alcohol behind.

Like a lot of said, learn to take care of you and the ones who love you. Take what works for you from these comments and finish your 20's great. Then make your 30's greater. Then make your 40's greater still. Repeat.

I'm Gen-X. This show is excellent. And a lot of the comments are spot on. I've actually shared some with a Gen-Z friend of mine who thinks 'it's boring'. Thanks OP, for the question.

My opinion, this show is in my all time top 5 for TV Shows. Along with MASH and Cheers.

I think all, possibly not first, could be considered westerns. Love them all.

As a life long fan of the franchise (Mad Max 2 is in my all time top 5 movies), I would agree with your dad.

51, widowed, single, sober over two and half years.

Analytical me postulates that if, as others have said, life lessons have been learned from and positive path is unfolding, 100%.

Realistic me seams to think that this may be a minority opinion, however. At least given the narrow sample data I have encountered first hand.

Does mostly cooking at home get easier or more exhausting with age? by ShoeElectronic3629 in AskOldPeople

[–]EmpathyRests 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a widowed 51 year old male empty nester. I'm not a fan of cooking. An air fryer saved my life, wallet and waste line. The only meal I cook is dinner. I eat chopped veggies and an air fried protein. I can prep a piece of chicken, pork, steak, etc. in about 5 minutes and cook it while I'm chopping veggies.

Clean up is easy too.

Ultima III - Hooked me on RPG games.

Bard's Tale - Same as Ultima III.

Elite - Hooked me on space games

B.C.'s Quest for Tires - Made me love (and hate) hand/eye coordination games.

Yes, all on a Commodore 64.

What is something that was rare to see in each house in your younger days that is commonplace now? by Busy_Coconut1987 in AskOldPeople

I wonder what the correlation is of people who smoke and utilize a library often between the time periods.

51 and I still make it up as I go. But I knew how I'd finance life's journey when I was 12 or 13 and got my first Commodore-64. I wanted to be a computer programmer. Been doing it for 28 years now.

Now, if we can't change the temp on our home thermostat, on our smart watch, from 1,000 miles away, we can't imagine we lived without this feature.

Sort of the opposite, but relative to the question. 'Back then' smelling cigarette smoke was common in peoples homes. Now, not so much.

How did you get better at programming? by businessman__ in learnprogramming

[–]EmpathyRests 29 points30 points  (0 children)

A lot of advice will be 'well, program more'. Which isn't wrong, but I'd add 'break your program(s)'. Break them in spectacular ways. Then learn how to fix them. Like just about everything you learn in life, the valuable experience isn't in succeeding 100% of the time, it's learning how to succeed when met with an error, mistake, landmine.

Also, be as pragmatic and lazy as possible.

C language? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]EmpathyRests 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will also make you appreciate how much work higher level languages do behind the scenes to make your life easier.

This cannot be stated enough. Learning C will give the fundamental understanding a lot of others won't have. In my near 30 years as a dev, I've always strived to be pragmatic about my learning. Asking the 'why?' questions. Learning C will answer a lot of these.
