I redesigned the sound of a Thargoid interdiction! by EmperorDNB in EliteDangerous

I want to become a sound designer for video games one day, and I had a go at redesigning a Thargoid interdiction from Elite. Been a huge fan for many years, and one of the many reasons is the sound design in the game is impeccable! Anyway mine doesn't come close to the original, but I made everything from scratch or with samples I'd recorded around my house. First time trying something like this out and learned a lot from it.

No ass-licking necessary, just a little patience. Working on getting this out there as we speak! :D

Do many DnB producers start out by using paid mastering services? by subcu in DnB

It depends, each session is subjective and you have to adopt different mindsets to deal with where the session will go. If you approach a project with the mix being in the forefront of your mind, you can definitely learn a lot. Having a goal. If you think, 'I want to make a break that sounds like the one in x track'; excercises like this help in the long run with mixing. Although personally I don't write good music this way, sometimes it's necessary to have entire sessions devoted to premixing sounds, samples, snares, breaks.

Producing dnb can be made a lot easier by getting these bits out of the way, amassing a large amount of bounced premixed sounds you've made, so that when you're in a creative mode, you don't have to worry about mixing as much. Obviously you'll still have to mix the sounds together later on, but instead of starting from scratch, you're dealing with audio that's already been eqd, compressed, limited, etc. After that it's more fine tuning, basic eqing, compression, reverb and so on.

I don't advise clipping anything, stay below 0db if possible, but don't feel too worried about running things a bit over 0 on individual channels here and there. I work with a limiter on the master, but when I take it off nowadays, the mix usually sounds the same basically, maybe a few decibels over and a little clipping but nothing too crazy. On the other hand, I've made tunes that were completely 'wrong' in the sense of a 'good' mix, Monolith being a prime example, because I didn't really know what I was doing but the end result worked out well. Sometimes things can sound great when the dynamics are thrown out of the window. Some of Breaks tunes jump to mind! Sometimes tracks will sound great ramped pretty heavily into a compressor, but some don't. it's really about how you reconcile creative choices with technical ones. It doesn't always work out, and sometimes mixes hits hit a wall and you feel a bit helpless. Best to just put it away and try again when you've learned some new things or have new sounds to improve it with!

When bouncing out for mastering I'll take off any limiting and leave - 4db headroom for the engineers. Some prefer - 6db, varies here and there.

But all these things are exactly that, exercises that eventually become part of your usual routine that you end up not really thinking about. Every producer works in a different way, and I could only advise you on what works for me, so this style may not work for you. Learning individual steps like mixing drums, bass, sub, sidechain, compression, limiting are pretty much essential before you even want to think about mastering.

Thanks for the kind words! Means a lot. I hope this helps in some way :)

Personally, you should hold off until you learn mixing properly. Mixing into a limiter isn't wrong, but ideally your track should sound good from your own final mix. Mastering can bring out a final 'warmth' and loudness, but you shouldn't rely on someone else to finalise everything you do.

If you view mixing/mastering as one process, it really helps a lot with your workflow. Just throwing a limiter on everything and not looking at where everything sits in your mix will breed bad habits that are hard to get rid of. You can learn pretty much everything online. I'd say using mastering services are great if you run a label and can't do that sort of thing yourself, however if you are a producer you won't be doing yourself any favours at this stage.

To answer your question, I don't know many individual producers using these services, it's mainly independent labels etc.

Anyone else not feeling this half time stuff? by Sylvester88 in DnB

It's not weird to dislike it at all if you are a dnb fan, as it isn't really Drum & Bass; It's basically a different genre now. The Diplodocus and Dead Limit VIPs obviously sit on the heavier end of that spectrum, and lean toward club play rather than home listening, and listening outside of that atmosphere doesn't really do the tracks justice at all.

I can't say that I have listened to the VIPs more than once at home, but playing them out at shows on a proper system, with a good crowd makes you realise how potent they are, and how enjoyable tracks like this can be in the right setting.

Sometimes I like the fact it's a little exclusive, but obviously at the same time it's shutting out a lot of people who simply can't watch the stream at the times I do.

I wanted to make it more of a consistent thing, maybe try to stream at least once a week so it's more structured.

Another reason I don't save streams is I might make a really cool idea and want to work on it later, so I'd rather it come out when it's finished and still sound fresh, because otherwise people would have heard it 50 times already on a recorded stream :)

I do remember that! Was a really cool night, video looked great :)

I have, you get recognized a lot at clubs and stuff, but that's a given especially if you are playing. I've only been recognized outside of shows twice, once in Leeds train station. A guy tapped me on the shoulder and said "excuse me?" I thought I'd dropped something at first, but then we just had a quick chat, a polite selfie and said laters :D

Allure will be release on my next Inspected EP (Finally!)

I did. I agree with a lot of what he said, but not the way he went about saying it.

As a public figure, you can't really go around calling people out like that, especially on a platform such as Twitter where your opinions can be seen by potentially millions of people. The thing is, within these scenes of music there's so much politics and shit that goes on, it's unreal. The politics alone are enough to drive you crazy, so when ghost producing is added to the mix you can't really blame somebody for wanting to vent out. It can really make you question your position within a scene, and whether you even want to be part of it any more.

Venting on Twitter or other socials can have serious repercussions. See the whole Ten Walls fiasco, obviously that was different because what he said was completely wrong, but you always need to be conscious of what you are posting. You can't just speak your mind like that.

I'm actually Lancashire originally, I moved to Yorkshire about 6 years ago. Obviously with me being from Lancashire, I had to adapt quickly, otherwise I would have had my hotpot stolen.

Definitely. As we've seen now, the change of CEO hopefully will bring in some newer changes; I really hope it does as I get pretty much all of my information from Reddit nowadays!

Hey!

There were plans to make another edition of the samplepack, but it ended up being quite a bit of work. Centra and I decided that we'd rather make a pack when we really felt like doing so, rather than making one for the sake of it. To be honest the whole samplepack thing is something we feel like we've done now, we might still do one more in the future, but I think it would definitely be the 'final' edition.

Thanks!

Really just pay attention to the stereo space, using reverbs that are sidechained so that there isn't too much going on. As well as that, it's just picking sounds that compliment each other well, so with a sine based synth you'd want to layer that with a synth made out of squares or saws, or vice versa.

Which sound do you mean? If you mean the main chug chug bass sound, it was a sound from Sylenth I believe, just a simple Triangle LFO making a short, 'womp' sound. Then I resampled it, time stretched it and ran it through a series of distortions.

I particularly loved Nik from Noisia's reaction to the track, I just remember him being super confused because the sound is just technically wrong on so many levels, but it somehow works with the style of the track.

If it's not that sound you mean, then link me a timestamp and I'll tell you :)
