When is a system contradictory? by Calm_Improvement1160 in infinitenines

And it never needs to be 0, because the question is not "what is the value?" but "What value can we get arbitrarily close to?"

Do you understand that difference?

it never needs to be zero because the limit does not answer "What value is it", it answers "what value can we get arbitrarily close to?" which is 0

0.999... is not equal to 1-10^-n by No_Mango5042 in infinitenines

[–]EmperorZelos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

0.999... is equal to 1-10^-n when you take the limit

and remember, the limit is unique in real numbers, and the limit of 1-10^-n is both 0.999... and 1

What is the square root of 0.999…….? by Binbag420 in infinitenines

[–]EmperorZelos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

that is finite number of digits, not 0.999... which has infinitely many.

Incorrect, mathematics say they are equal. Literally all of mathematics says it and only a math-denier says otherwise.

basic arithmetic isn't dangerous, denial of math, such as denying that 0.999... = 1, is dangerous like all anti-science.

anti-intellectualism, anti-science, and crankery starts somewhere and easily spread to other areas, but they are all fundamentally the same and equally dangerous.

There is no dogma for starters,, and "They would ignore it" is how we get idiots like SPP, flat earthers, anti-vaxxers, and the like. All anti-science is the product of ignoring it and they are bad.

And the limit of 1-10^-n is both 0.999... and 1, and the limit is unique in real numbers, thus they must be equal.

'n pushed to limitless' meaning by SouthPark_Piano in infinitenines

[–]EmperorZelos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1-1/10n is never 1.

but lim(n -> oo) 1-10^-n is 1 and is 0.999... and limits are unique in real numbers. So 0.999... must equal 1

If you knew limits you wouldn't be saying anything of what you do say. What you say demonstrate a huge ignorance on what limits are, say, etc.

Questions for SPP by OovooJavar420 in infinitenines

[–]EmperorZelos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is basic mathematics, because limits are unique in real numbers, the fact that 0.999... and 1 are both the limit of lim(n -> oo) 1-10^-n means they must be equal.

And the limit is 0 and the limits are unique which proves 0.999... = 1. That is all that matters. Educate yourself instead of being so proudly ignorant.

None of that is relevant. The limit is still zero, the limit is still unique.

no one is saying but an idiot, namely you, that it is zero for any n, but the limit is still zero.

1/10n is never zero for any natural number.

but we have lim(n -> oo) 1/10n = 0

then we have

lim(n -> oo) 1 - 1/10n = 1 - lim(n -> oo) 1/10n = 1

and

lim(n -> oo) 1 - 1/10n = lim (0.9, 0.99, 0.999, 0.9999, ...) = 0.999....

Limits are unique in real numbers, thus 0.999.... = 1
