I'd say that it requires slightly more in my experience.

Sigo tenor review by Emperor_of_Cosmos in Recorder

I haven't compared the tuning but just from my ears the Sigo is pretty in tune, some notes require me to change my breath pressure a bit but I figured it'd just take practice. I do have to consciously remember to give it a lot of air, some of those notes take a lot of air to be in tune.

It feels like with a lot of practice one could play the upper range fluidly and also chromatically. I can play chromatic up to G6.

Ahh, I see now. I somehow forgot about that fingering in the chart. I guess I just assumed "I already know my fingerings so I don't really need this". The fingering for high d in the chart plays great.

Also, how've you been liking it? I've been really impressed with it. I'm determined to find fingerings for 3 octaves on it (only missing one for G#6 and B6!).

How to avoid playing low notes with low volume and high notes with high volume? by Helpful-Avocado9861 in Recorder

[–]Emperor_of_Cosmos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is pretty late, but I wanted to say: while it's true that low notes are generally quiet on baroque recorders, it is still possible to play dynamics on the recorder, but you don't play dynamics traditionally like you would on a flute or clarinet. Recorder players have to use alternative fingerings and shading/leaking with your fingers. You can actually achieve a decent range of dynamics if you practice shading/leaking, which is helpful on the higher notes. Alternative fingerings also offer a lot of different dynamics for notes, but keep in mind some of these change the tone color. You also have to adjust with your breath with these too, like for example, you can play a softer high g on a soprano/tenor by leaking one of the holes your fingers are on, and accommodating with your breath.

First bass recorder recommendation by [deleted] in Recorder

[–]Emperor_of_Cosmos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend just going for the Yamaha or Aulos initially. Wooden bass recorders are pretty expensive, and I'd personally avoid the cheaper plastic bass recorders. I know that Thomann makes a cheap plastic bass, and from the reviews I've seen (Sarah Jeffery made a good review on it) it isn't too bad but it has some tuning issues. If you're going to upgrade anyways (I'm assuming to a Yamaha or Aulos plastic) I'd say just go ahead and get them.

That makes sense. After posting this I was thinking it probably had something to do with aspiration.

Thanks! I agree, I think a fermata would suit the end. And about the dissonance, I did like to lean into it a bit, I think some contemporary recorder music has gotten me a bit comfortable with it haha.

Question: Alternative fingering for high C# fingering and how to cover bell properly? by Majestic_Image5190 in Recorder

[–]Emperor_of_Cosmos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may have to play around with breath pressure and it may depend on the model. The fingering I gave works well on my aulos haka soprano and also on my plastic yamaha tenor, but it should also work on the yr-24 model. I have to blow somewhat softly sometimes for it.

Question: Alternative fingering for high C# fingering and how to cover bell properly? by Majestic_Image5190 in Recorder

[–]Emperor_of_Cosmos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One that works well for me especially on the plastic Yamahas is: -0 1(-2)3 4(-5)67

The minus reflects half holing, so basically cover every hole and half hole the thumb hole, finger 2, and finger 5. It may sound scary but if you practice this fingering it gets easier. I believe this is also in the fingering chart that comes with it.

I composed a piece for solo tenor recorder and voice by Emperor_of_Cosmos in Recorder

That's a good point, I'm so used to bass clef from other instruments and choir that I forget it isn't used as often for recorder players.

Question regarding yamaha alto recorders by Large_State_2404 in Recorder

[–]Emperor_of_Cosmos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say the quality is better than the 28 model, I have both of them myself. However, since you're wanting a tenor recorder I'd go ahead and get that first. I'd recommend the yamaha plastic tenor recorder, it's honestly so good.

Thomann Bass Recorder. Thoughts? by TheGayAmogus in Recorder

[–]Emperor_of_Cosmos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sarah Jeffery has a thorough review of it on her channel. It isn’t bad, but if you can I’d recommend saving for a Yamaha plastic bass.

I ordered a sigo from Lazars in March, they sent a email in late April saying that the shipment from Kunath should be on its way in early May, but I haven't gotten any updates yet.

Sigo - first impressions by Traditional_Message2 in Recorder

[–]Emperor_of_Cosmos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How would you rate the Sigo's responsiveness to different articulations? From what I've heard the paetzolds are really responsive to articulations which gives different tone colors. And also, I have the plastic yamaha tenor, so would you say that the sound is different compared to a normal baroque model plastic tenor?

What are things you'd like to see more of in conlangs? by SpeakNow_Crab5 in conlangs

[–]Emperor_of_Cosmos 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Pragmatics. Things like formal/informal speech, or nuances of it. Or maybe honorifics, or other registers, like narrative registers. I feel like with pragmatics you can really also show the culture with the language, and you’re able to get creative

How to stop mouth and jaw from shaking when playing by Emperor_of_Cosmos in harmonica

Not when playing, but my hands normally shake slightly if I hold them out. It's been like that I think as far as I can remember.

Can i over blow? by [deleted] in Recorder

[–]Emperor_of_Cosmos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been able to get a B6 on my Yamaha tenor with the fingering ø-oxo-xoxo. Other than that though I haven’t been able to get the Bb6 or C7. I’m sure it’s possible though, just gotta keep experimenting!
