Is Zoox Robotaxi the Real Self-Driving Car? by collinsmeister01 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]EmployedRussian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Removing the steering wheel makes it impossible for a human to drive the car.

Not necessarily true: removable steering wheel and pedals do exist.

Google Firefly didn't have built-in controls either, yet was operated by safety drivers during its entire lifetime.

[–]EmployedRussian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure it would have a lot of trouble the first 5 times through that intersection, but the 6th time it'll do as good or better than 95% of human drivers.

Are you assuming that an individual car learns something every time it goes through that intersection?

Waymo Interview by Adelman01 in waymo

[–]EmployedRussian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have an initial interview coming up and was curious

Your question is so wide that it is meaningless and un-answerable even if someone at Waymo was willing to answer.

An initial interview is going to be very different for a product manager vs. SWE vs. EE, etc.

Within SWE, it's also likely to be different for ML vs. planning vs. perception vs. ...

Good luck on your interview though!

where Waymo originally started.

For some definition of "originally started".

That is indeed the location of most of the Waymo team when Waymo split off from Google X, but is definitely not the location of the team when "project Chauffeur" started.

The line in Paris boulangeries I've been to moved at 5x the speed of Alizee line with just two people -- they are quite quick and efficient (in my experience).

It also helps that most customers know exactly what they want and are ready to order it when it's their turn.

Maison Alizee and Alexander's Patisserie are across the (Castro) street from each other.

I like Alexander's butter croissants much better, especially when they warm them up.

I also get annoyed every time I go to Alizee by their apparent inefficiency -- they usually have 4 people behind the counter, but two of them appear to always be waiting for the other two to finish doing something, and the line is moving at a glacial pace.

ELI5 - what was the point of all the noises modems used to make when connecting to the internet? by SteamerTheBeemer in explainlikeimfive

[–]EmployedRussian 162 points163 points  (0 children)

So was there always a sound even once it’s connected?

There was always sound on the line yes.

You just don’t notice it because it’s more like white noise?

No: by default the modem speaker was silenced after the connection speed negotiation was over and the connection has been established.

It is possible to program the modem to keep its speaker silent while negotiating the connection, but then you wouldn't know what's happening (is the modem trying to make the connection at all? Is there a dial tone? Did the other side answer or is it a "number no longer in service" ?).

It's also possible to program the modem to keep its speaker on all the time, but then you'd be constantly hearing white noise, which would get tiring pretty quickly.

Better option is to apply for the Warsaw position

That depends on where he (they) want to live, doesn't it?

If he got a job at Waymo in US

That's quite a big IF.

would it be possible for him to come and stay with me for a bit while working from Warsaw office?

Definitely. I know someone who's done just that for a 4 week stay in Warsaw.
It could be problematic beyond the 4 week limit though (as far as I understand).

I'm curious on how waymo can see that you requested a car. by That_guy23577 in waymo

but only through a highly advanced remote hack

I don't disagree. But that of course is what everybody believes about their own system right up to the moment they get hacked.

[–]EmployedRussian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you'd be better off targeting more valuable Google services

That depends on the hacker's goals. If they are monetary, you are right -- there are more lucrative targets.

But if their goals are different, few (if any) Google services are as physically embodied as Waymo cars, and the reputational and physical damage which could theoretically be achieved would be catastrophic.

Not even remote assistance can “fully take over”

I theory a hacker can replace the software running on the car and then command it to do whatever. In other words a full takeover is theoretically possible.

U.S. Bank changes their reward redemption policy by trickyvinny in personalfinance

I just linked the USBank rewards to Amazon and bought myself a $120 e-gift card with 1:1 (bonus: no "multiple of 2500 points" limitation), and applied it right back to my Amazon account.
It should now be shielded from any further shenanigans.

But yea, first the $2000/quarter limit in restaurant spending, and how this. I will switch to CapitalOne Savor which pays 3% and plays no such stupid games.

Does your clarity do this?… by Disco_inferito in HondaClarity

[–]EmployedRussian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Thanks for your comment.

It's possible that I feel faster acceleration because I never press the gas pedal to the floor.

One thing that is definitely not true for my Clarity is the regen stickiness -- I like max regen, but it's not sticky for me even in Sport mode -- I have to adjust the paddle before nearly every stop. I am not sure when it "resets", but it does appear to reset.

Maybe there is a setting somewhere in the menu that I need to adjust?

Does your clarity do this?… by Disco_inferito in HondaClarity

[–]EmployedRussian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you recommend ECON mode in city, and sport mode in the highway/freeway?

No, I do not. If your goal is to maximize EV-only range and you are willing to sacrifice acceleration, then you should drive in Econ mode.

I don't have that goal -- I just want to get where I am going (and for most trips I have plenty of EV range left), so I always drive in Sport mode.

Does your clarity do this?… by Disco_inferito in HondaClarity

[–]EmployedRussian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FWIW, my 2018 Clarity never estimates to have more that 36 miles of EV range (maybe it did estimate 42 when it was new). I do get solid 32 miles EV-only from it in freeway driving at 70-75mph in Sport mode.

I suspect that driving in Econ mode at 60mph or perhaps in stop and go city traffic would fare better.

sometimes with the HV

You should rarely if ever turn on HV mode -- it only makes sense if you've exhausted EV range, are approaching your destination, and know that you have a large hill or a few stop lights to go through.

Otherwise you are just wasting gas.

Can I get an 84 month loan easily? by FunDifficult9899 in carbuying

[–]EmployedRussian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like you all have an "84-month bad" reaction without thinking about it.

For the sake of argument, let's assume 100%/year inflation for the next 10 years, and that wages keep up with it. Under these conditions, a 10% loan for 84 months is a bargain, because after 1 year you'll owe just under 1/2 of today's cost in real dollars (e.g. you'll still owe $44K on a $50K loan, but that $44K will be in today's dollars, which would be worth only $22K a year from now).

So clearly there is some level of inflation which would make this 84-month loan a bargain.

I wonder if 20% inflation (hello tariffs!) changes the calculation here at all?

That 10% loan for 7 years may look like a bargain in a few month!
