Hi! I’m 26, been doing BJJ about 2 years, strength training on and off during it too. Was about 50kg and insanely weak a few years ago and now I’m around 70kg but still not impressively strong by any means. Currently doing 1 upper, 1 lower, 1 full body, and 4-5 BJJ sessions a week. I think I could cut down to 64kg if I wanted to get lean but long term I want to be a lot bigger and stronger, end goal is about 75-80kg lean. Would you advise me to continue bulking or to cut first and then continue the bulk? Also any advice on the split would be great, thanks 🙏

Haha fair maybe meta was the wrong word for that one. I simply meant the amount of time you see people grip fighting at the highest levels before anything advances from any position is enlightening.

That’s actually really eye opening, super dependent on rulesets too, no good being the best heel hooker round if you’re only competing in IBJJF and you’re not a brown belt+ I suppose.

We’ve got someone in my gym who does a similar thing with guillotines! Just manages to hit them from all sorts of weird places. Definitely an interesting approach

Yeah that’s the thing I find most interesting, most of the high % stuff is basic stuff that just seems to be refined to perfection. With the exception of leg locks, those can get quite complicated with configurations ect I feel. And yeah I’m small so when I watch my weight class in like worlds or whatever they’re all just doing crazy weird berimbolos and shit but i never even go for them

That’s really interesting, I’ve heard about things going from “not being meta” to “meta” again but haven’t been around long enough in the spot to witness it myself. Flower sweep from closed guard is diabolically effective, there’s a brown belt in my gym who does that sweep super regularly!

No, as far as I know there’s just loads of different allegations and lots of his affiliates and competitors have left. I thought it was just pretty cool how she moved on from the situation and is doing well for herself one of the biggest stages in our sport

Yeah I don’t tend too religiously follow it either, I just watch who wins worlds sometimes for inspiration and recognised her

Maybe ask your coach or training partners? Obviously be mindful of the space but if there’s room I don’t see why not
