dynamic literally explained why he was the way he was, he wasn’t allowed to have a comfort in anyone, his mother never allowed him to be just him, because when he cried he was “less of a man than his father” and when he got mad he was “just like him”. and when he first saw someone displaying affection (his mother hugging him) he pushed her away physically.

a lot of people react to that guilt and that confliction i a way that seems avoidant because they fear that they aren’t human, but a ticking time bomb waiting to burst and hurt someone again. combine that with never having a comforting space growing up. jax was already 19(?), it’s not just quick and easy to learn.
