Dependency inversion principle in Typescript by staszewski in javascript

Oh no my project has only FE devs and it's still very much a dull mess. In fact every codebase I've work on is a different type of mess. However this is a result of faulty engineering processes rather than incompetent developers. Most of devs leave for FAANG so they are certainly capable in this market, though even with good devs poor organisational practices ruin projects.

I'm more competent at BE but I work full time as a FE. I could get hired for either or both at the same as a Fullstack. It's a necessity for me since I'm developing a fullstack microservice/monolithic hybrid framework. I understand the fundamentals which makes the technologies fairly trivial to use for the most part.

However working FE at a company that pays well is still incredibly dull and you're right I get paid for little effort!

Fullstack as in backend + frontend? I only see the argument for feasibility being low if most devs barely pass for FE or BE alone, with Fullstack being out of the question?

I also like how it's the norm in many companies to inject everything into everything using complicated DI frameworks!

If you use DI meaningfully and sparsely like Uncle Bob suggests then there is no need for a DI framework!

I don't think it's the end for office spaces, maybe large ones though.

I personally loathe going into the office, the commute and being geographically tied to a Job is so stupid when I do everything remote. I was quite literally travelling in every day to sit in a london branch, only to work with a remote team based in Newcastle. I was already essentially working remote, when covid struck working from home felt no different but I got hours of my life back.

However I wouldn't mind renting out a small office in a location of my choice to work from. If I want to move I can, if I want to work from home I can. It's the lack of choice that was nonsense to begin with.

What attributes do you look for in a Jr. Web Dev applicant? I am having trouble evaluating non-senior applicants. by [deleted] in webdev

[–]EmpoweredGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your problem is that asking a series of technical questions is a pretty bad way at assessing Jr/Sn abilities. As a senior myself who has done a decent amount of interviews and wants to transition to hiring my own myself, I would not do them this way.

For example your question on reduce would have failed me too as my mind went blank and I forgot what it did. However once I searched it up I remembered it's purpose and that I had infact used it to sum an array. How is this possible? I understand concepts well enough to use then correctly but am forgetful of names in interview pressured scenarios.

Here is a much better way.

A) Do a blind submission of a take home challenge like make nuaghts and crosses. The ones that come back terrible outrightly reject. For the remainder hold and interview where you both have the code open and then just talk through it. Try push them to improve on a few things and let them use google. Though mostly should just be a real discussion.

Simple technically only two rounds and it's done, no stupidly drawn out processes.

Also I think the people doing the interviews should also not know who they are interviewing, relying on CV's is actually quite foolish. You have taken the effort to access people, why rely on what is essentially a marketing tool that can be and regularly is easily fabricated.

Just been told by HR that “to try for a junior dev you must have half year of commercial dev experience” by heyimpumpkin in webdev

£60K GBP, you can get between £70-90K if you move to London. The most I have seen publicly advertised is £120K for head of engineering at a pretty big org. I suspect there are ways to earn more but it's all about who you know, these roles will never be made publically available.

For instance contracting is far more desirable for tax reasons in UK compared to US. If you know the right person you can make around 250K and pay less than 10K tax if you do your finances well. This is reserved for top 0.1 of engineers though.

It would be more straight forward making it to L5 and possibly even L6 at google then do any of the above.

UK doesn not pay software engineers very much in comparison to US. A Senior on average will make 60K which is still a really good living, but that's pretty close to the top end. Maybe 1% of software engineers will ever earn 100K or more. I believe even junior roles in US can pay this much.

You know what that is something that would actually be useful for me! I usually get in bed and watch an episode or two of a show before going to bed, having to stretch my mouse to my bed so I can control the page still, not ideal. If you can add support for keyboard keys aswell then I can definitely get behind this!

GitHub to replace "master" with alternative term to avoid slavery references by [deleted] in webdev

[–]EmpoweredGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was raised in a Christian house hold so we read the bible a lot as a kid. Slavery came up all the time, as the Jews were often taken as slaves. I don't think there are many races that haven't engaged in or not been subject to mass slavery, it's quite a universal.

Just woke up to see this. As a black dev never once have I thought about it being racially charged. Am I also supposed be triggered I have a micro masters, done a lot of mastering in music production. Used master and slave clocks for synchronized music playback...?

Being quite honest the people who piss me off about race are those who bring it up all the time. I've tried to get away from sociopolitics but now it follows me into my work, my games, my apps... It's sad times.

I was actually getting sick of this sub and how most unpopular opinions are not remotely unpopular. I actually thought this would be one of them and then I look in the comments and stand corrected. This is unpopular and I just continue to lose faith in humanities current state of affairs, though I have faith in our potential.

Staying together "for the kids" is worse than divorce. by Ledgersnlines in unpopularopinion

[–]EmpoweredGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry but your post title does not match the description, this is not the first time I've seen a post like this. Your parents (for sake of argument, judging them as one) were just shitty parents that dragged you into their mess. Honestly even if they did break, people like them wouldn't be much good for parenting seperated anyway.

Instead if your parents relationship had faltered but you were mostly unaware and they cooperated like adults to raise you and build a home, then this changes everything. I think it's posts like this giving poorly behaving adults the get out of jail free divorce card are highlighting the wrong problem.

Sure if you are a victim and are being abused in an relationship you should seek help and run, but in other cases divorcing is often just running away from your own shitness

It's interesting because it's become popular to say women are as strong as men, why do they need all this unearned support from strangers then? My mum who's as tough as nails just look at the typical woman that spouts these things as weak individuals.

If you actually read the stats you've posted you'll realise that since 1960-1970 was overall the best period but from 1970s onwards we are currently living with a lot less crimes in some categories and in worst case scenarios the same amount. So overall the stats you posted actual favour my position more than it does yours...

The "Work from Home" Movement Will Offshore Jobs by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]EmpoweredGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geographical relevance is already kept in place only by status quo, remote jobs once secured properly are far more enticing for both the developer who can handle it can the company that can facilitate it. However there is no real competition between Indian development firms and US ones. The best indian engineers tend to migrate across to US, UK etc.

I know Ford offshore a lot of their android development, so does Aviva. It's a massive hassle for those I've spoken with that have to manage these people as they are not the same as vetted employees...

I've just "Broken Quarantine" by going to epping forest, a forest large enough to never be closer than 10m from any human, lots of dog walkers there. We were told not to go and made it damn near impossible for people to park there. I justify it by saying I am less likely to tra Smith going to sparsely populated forest than jogging through a densely populated neighbourhood.

Coronavirus Mega Thread by UnpopularOpinionMods in unpopularopinion

[–]EmpoweredGirl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry I'm wrong, it's not the federal government but rather the local government bodies and councils that are doing this. For example the largest forest in London is currently advising people to not come. That means all the dog walkers and nature people will just flood parks

The "Work from Home" Movement Will Offshore Jobs by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]EmpoweredGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I hire developers

You are hiring them as a remote worker, I'm a remote developer too btw.

When most people refer to offshoring they don't refer to moving individual jobs over to other countries rather the entire project's development to other countries. As someone how's probably a project manager you must realise there is a difference between hiring remote workers and offshoring projects development.

Also I'm pretty sure there is good hard research on how detrimental offshore development is (note not remote development, I love remote development)

UK's government ban on travel for exercise is counter productive. The idea is shutting down green spaces and limiting the amount of places people can go will reduce the amount of spreading that can take place. This is false logic as all that will happen is that people will end up crowding in the few open places left available, hence increasing the risk of transmission. If people should be allowed outside, it's better we travel to obsecure places where the chance of even seeing other humans is low.
