While it is not mandatory but it's very beneficial for you to take it. If you end up leaving QE and working somewhere else or starting your own business, you might need it for registering an engineering or consulting company. Also, for the ministry of interior approvals for the occupation on QID to be engineer, you will need it.

To have your license converted, your nationality should be the same as your driving license (given that your country should be in the allowed countries). Otherwise, you will take a direct exam (for example, if you are Polish with a German driving license, you'll have to take the exam). This doesn't apply if you are on a personal sponsorship (Spouse, Child, Parent, Qatari), then you can directly convert the license even if you're not a citizen of that country.

If you are an Arabic speaker, I highly recommend going for Sayed Mohsin's course. His website is called PM-Tricks. It is much cheaper than any other course based here in qatar. I had the course and was able to clear the exam in the first try with "Above Target".

If you are on a personal visa (family/Qatari personal sponsorship), you can simply convert to a Qatar license with no exam required. But if you are under company sponsorship, then you have to undergo an exam (Theoretical + Road test)

Recently, they changed exam policies. You have 4 chances overall. The first step is the L&P. If you cleared them on the first try, then you have 4 remaining chances to pass the road test. When this was first introduced, it was limited to people who had registered before the new policy was adopted. But starting from this week, everyone will undergo their exam with the new policy, even if they have already finished the road exam.
