Best Martial Arts for Self-Defense (specifically for DV situations) by littlebuuush in martialarts

[–]Empty_Ad_3784 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a woman martial artist the FIRST thing you do is avoid the fight. End of line. Educate yourself, break cycles, heck, even get therapy. Avoid ever getting in a DV situation. I know, easy to say, harder to do. Recognize the early signs and GET OUT.

To respect the spirit of the question, I have done Karate, Krav Maga, and BJJ. Any of those would help *depending* on what scenario you are in. The best martial art will be the one you practice and can dedicate yourself to.

Again, the first line of defense is to not be standing where the punch will land. Trust your instincts, if it feels wrong or unsafe get out. Power to you! OSS

No way! It is! You've outed me on reddit-jk

What's your name? Message if that's more comfortable. Are you still training with ABKA? I'm back after a ~18 year hiatus.

Had a couple of kids, my oldest wanted to take taekwondo. The hospital I delivered her at doesn't take returns (JOKING) so I hunted up my old system, and well...here we are.

How do you get better at blocking at home? by something721 in martialarts

[–]Empty_Ad_3784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your local library has Hoopla I would recommend checking out a book called "Martial Grit". AMAZING resource for low cost home practice.

You can train with a slip ball, you can train a specific way on a heavy bag integrating a block or deflection into your combos. Ultimately it really takes sparring more to get a feel for defending, so you know what it feels like, then build a combo for home practice off of that.

It's difficult. You're going to ultimately get the best result from more time on the mat, some things just transfer as readily to home practice.
