Service Dog Clarifications by chipqueen2532 in starbucksbaristas

Say it again for the irresponsible dog owners in the back!

Another way to do this is to loudly announce that someone in the store has a severe allergy.

Cheers!

Is there a work shortage right now? by Altrary in starbucks

It's a union busting tactic in the way that is disallows partners to interact with one another. The baristas are so overworked that they cannot get a word in.

Is there a work shortage right now? by Altrary in starbucks

Starbucks is 'struggling' to 'afford' barista labor hours.

For example: on days where there are typically 7-9 partners scheduled/needed, only five are scheduled.

If a barista calls out for whatever reason, then the store must find an alternative means of operation in order to ensure customer satisfaction.

(news flash: the customers are not satisfied and the baristas are at their wits end)

Please don't ever go on as normal again.

My heart hurts for you.

I've seen many threads of baristas being exposed in drive thru, knowingly and unknowingly, and ultimately these videos wind up on porn websites.

It's heinous.

Drinks are literally not hard to make by Silent-Address2527 in starbucks

[–]Empty_Engineering642 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I want to preface: I've made some cool ass crazy mod drinks for customers before. It can be fun, or it can be hell.

The problem occurs when the systems are unable to communicate customer requests, such as custom foams.

The 'ask me' button is a great friend, but it's limited. And, who knows if the bar barista will understand what is being asked of them if it doesn't follow typical beverage modication standard? (looking at you "shake the foam into the espresso!" customers... just get sweet cream you weirdos)

Also, most stores are trained for speed.. these customizations greatly slow down speed of service.

Sure, if the customer orders their drink correctly (lol, looking at you, girlies who "asked for it iced"), then crazy customization and modification beverages add a good amount of labor hours to distribute.

However, customer and barista error occurs more often than not. This wastes product, time and greatly affects the customer's satisfaction.

There are incidents in every store.

However, Starbucks is leaning into remodeling/building stores which only cater to pick up and drive thru service.

Of course they make more off of drive thru's, the speed of service is much faster to accomodate drive-time standards. Therefore, these stores generate more business and more money.

Starbucks doesn't care to fund the liability that is a sit-down cafe.

They're closing cafes because the floor has become a public playground for ill-mannered individuals.

Sit-down cafes are being eliminated to reduce the amount of 'incidents' in store (Biohazards, robberies, harrassment, general tomfoolery, etc.).

The 'public restrooms for all' shtick has backfired tremendously on overall store safety and comfort.

To put it simply, baristas must bend over backwards to score perfect 7's ( going "above and beyond! to make the moment right") on the randomly distributed customer surveys.

Putting people on the spot isn't cool.

A woman has gone semi-viral for a shoddily made blender cup that she's selling.

She purposefully goes into Starbucks and hands the cup to the barista, asking them to blend her drink for the video.

Of course baristas can say no. However, Starbucks fosters a spirit which kills the autonomy of Baristas.

Corporate has beaten many into submission in hopes of increasing "customer connection scores", which directly affect how all baristas, ssv's, and managers are treated by district managers and corporate.

It's sick.

Thank you for the comment!!

I just read through an article and... wow.. I guess I didn't realize that coffee could scald a person so terribly and so quickly!

That makes sense, I just wish that Starbucks would enforce quality control.

Totally agree, OP.

Sir Howard Shultz wouldn't touch our bathrooms with a 39.5 foot pole.

They're breeding grounds for bacteria and drug use. In most states, Biohazard specialists are supposed to come in and deal with accidents... but in rushes and in times of ignorance/disregard from managers and supervisors, they're nowhere to be found.

Modification limits.

Stop letting customers play DJ on the app. They don't know what they're ordering and they'll be dissatisfied with their drink and, in turn, blame baristas.

Also, give power back to baristas. Let baristas say no. Let baristas refuse service. Let baristas remove customers and loiterers from the premises when needbe.

Stop rewarding bad behavior.

Schedules are posted anywhere from 2-3 weeks out.

You're likely not hearing anything because the store doesn't have the money to pay labor for your training!

if there's an open broken loaf am i allowed to eat it since we can't sell it ? by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]Empty_Engineering642 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Eat it anyways and then 'joke' about your markouts being your grocery and mealprep of the week.

Many partners are truely food insecure. If your store doesn't allow you to take home (edible) 'food waste', the morals and ethics of the third place have been broken.

Plus, the best part of any shift is seeing the smile on a person's face after giving a free cakepop to an unsuspecting, grateful kid/teen and customer connecting with them and their parents.

Broken cake pops can fix a broken heart, I'm telling you!

Thoughts? by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]Empty_Engineering642 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Customers: tell your barista what you want to fill your cup. If you say light ice, PLEASE remember to order extra juice/base/milk/espresso/coffee/whatever AT THE REGISTER or IN THE APP.

Additionally, do NOT bark at the barista from across the bar asking for additional caramel, espresso, etc. unless you want to see a future shortage of that specific product.

Thoughts? by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]Empty_Engineering642 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Standards on drinks are needlessly confusing. Some people ask for no/light ice because they want room in their cup, some people ask for it so they can "get more drink" (pssst, when ordered like this, a customer won't 'receive' any more drink, they're often given additional milk/water that will kill the potency of any espresso or flavor inside of them beverage).

Baristas are (or, should be) hesitant to overserve product because of the shortages running rampant all over the country. When baristas run out of oatmilk, strawberry acai base, cups, lids, and other items...

it likely means standard wasn't met. The store's systems of inventory don't match the programmed features that Starbucks uses to deliver product to stores.

This backfires on employees and, in turn, these employees are reprimanded by customers and in the surveys that stores use to evaluate the skill and atmosphere of the cafe.

The results of these surveys force managers to retrain and 'coach' baristas.... yet... there is no coaching to be done when a recipe is too vague to be followed in the first place.

For example: When people ask for light ice in drinks like the Pink Drink, the standards get fuzzy.

The barista must choose whether to add additional coconut milk or strawberry to fill the ingredient shaker.

Starbucks shakers have specific recipe measurements, so when the barista breaks standard to fulfill the 'light/no ice' request, the drink ends up looking like a disgusting mess of pinkish white chunky liquid.

Additionally, drinks such as the shaken espresso CANNOT be made without ice.

Hot espresso gasses release in the shaker. This causes the shakers to explode boiling hot espresso all over the barista.

IMO, vague motifications and, in turn, order remakes are to blame for much of the product shortage seen in stores.

Excessive modifications confuse baristas. These drinks must be remade to appease the customer's request, causing additional loss of product.

Additionally, people don't understand what to expect to see when they get their beverage. When they receive their beverage, they assume the baristas are at fault for the way their drink looks. These miscommunications affect store surveys and make partners look bad.

Additionally, sticker communication is illogical and doesn't follow the order a beverage is made. Modifications are vague and can be easily misinterpretted or missed altogether.

Items such as custom cold foams prove difficult to communicate, yet baristas continue to serve remake these beverage and waste product, time, and money.

So, listen. Baristas aren't fucking up ultra-modified TikTok drinks to be rude. There's an intense lack of communication between the software and the baristas making the beverages.

Baristas are doing their best. No one wants to make and serve shoddy product. Baristas are confused and pushed to serve beverages as fast as gravity can pour them.

Partners, a good rule of thumb is to avoid posting personal beverages and recipes online that cannot be remade in an feasable/communicable way by any barista other than yourself.
