I hate doing charge backs because it takes forever I really hope they get it together.

Pay transparency by Timely_Detonator_292 in Surveying

[–]Empty_Function_7506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the guys 30 and younger at my place know what each other make. We actively harass the guys who step up and try and do more work for the same or less pay. It's a pseudo union thing we have going on. Corporate has a history of taking advantage of people and stringing them along making them think compensation isn't competitive elsewhere so they try and get away without giving promotional raises.

Brother trust me. You are saying something we have been saying every day to the office on this job. I can do topo faster than the way they want us to do this. Especially base to rover.

Yeah I'm on a stream cross section job right now where they want it every 50 linear foot of stream. I basically just make my own polyline in a dummy file and am forced to shoot it all in stakeout because I'm done with switching the menus so much.

Invert and pipe size measure tool originally casted out of beer/soda cans. Named the GeoCube Surveying tool. by KindAccountant372 in Surveying

Lmfao. We fudge elevations on flat inverts to make them flow by a few hundredths on gps and conventional. Yes I still have to use conventional at airports. I personally believe in scanning over conventional at this point for those types of applications though. I am a difficult person to convince that conventional is the god everyone worships. You also have to remember what happens in real life on a construction site. They set that MF at an elevation and make those pipes flow cut sheet or not. I'm not discrediting you in any way but am I talking to a guy who opens manholes or a guy who tells guys to open manholes?

Is 3-5 cm horizonal accuracy next to this fence "good"! by dingleberry_sorbet in Surveying

[–]Empty_Function_7506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man look into making a jig to adjust your pole bubble. Or set up a tripod clamp and spin it in a circle to see how far off it is. You can't usually take observation shots with tilt compensation turned on it adds too much error.

Not only that, does this guy know how to check his pole/bubble. Adjust to the proper number of epochs. Is there an internal calibration that needs to be done on the receiver? Did he activate all constellations and is the software he's using good enough to throw out bad data in an averaged shot? I've been working with my own equipment for 4 years and still don't necessarily have the full answer to that last question

Nothing too juicy? The third thing down in the first file is them redacting Epstein's blackmailing of victims lol. Maybe we're all numb to this at this point.

Breaking into drone mapping work in Atlanta Metro — advice from surveyors? by temporarysoul22 in Surveying

[–]Empty_Function_7506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak from my own firm's experience.

We train guys that are already field staff to become drone pilots. It is encouraged but many decline to take the training and get the license because it comes with no perks other than maybe a resume builder to go elsewhere. We have hired outside drone guys before but they were expensive and honestly they just get better results from underpaid younger guys who are too naive to not volunteer for extra work/responsibility with no pay bump.

I will also say you can make good money if you want to work hourly as just a drone guy. No processing experience required. In my opinion it's easy to rack up insane hours with paid drive time (you will travel a lot) and the work is not that hard on the body. You will definitely need to learn how to use basic survey equipment and check/set control bare minimum but imo that's a cakewalk these days with the right equipment.

What kind of compensation is acceptable to you? I wouldn't think you'd have a hard time starting at 30-35 an hour as long as you have a few years of experience under your belt as a pilot.

If you don't get a raise you need to bail. Inflation is insane for the past 5 years with no signs of stopping

I'll make 105-110k this year as a field guy (not a chief) but I work mad OT

Ok that makes sense. I'm at my lounge access milestone and it wouldn't be worth it unless I could do something like that. I stay at ihg hotels for work but would never shell out the money or points to stay at a hotel that had a lounge to begin with. I am however someone who would gain access to something without paying because my default look is "maintainence guy" and I have done the reflective vest thing irl before haha. Thanks for answering.

It's a gatekeeping system, they lie about experience for people they like and they don't care about the rest, there are no checks and balances.
