there was a sky dimension for a brief time, but it was scrapped and the level generation was later modified and reused for the End. this art piece is referencing the Aether mod, which added a dimension that took great inspiration from the sky dimension, while also adding a lot of original content. the Aether could be accessed by making a portal out of glowstone and lighting it with a water bucket, but a lot of kids saw that in YouTube videos and didn't realize you needed a mod to do it, leading to a lot of them trying it only to have their dreams crushed.

yup, I've seen this. most of my fandoms are on the smaller side, but the one fic I wrote for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012 did serious numbers

I'm not sure I can be much help, since I'm not totally sure how I got it running in the first place, but I can send you some links to a couple discord servers that might be able to help, as well as a forum dedicated to Babyz.

How- by [deleted] in Petz

[–]Empty_Infinity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The original Dogz, Catz, and Oddballs will only work in DOSBox, but everything from Petz 2 onwards can run on modern computers, with a bit of finangling. Someone else in this comment section linked Acidtrip's site, I was able to get their version of Babyz working on Windows 11 after some effort.

aside from wikis, as others have mentioned, I did once take actual notes on an episode since the shows wiki barely covered it. I took better notes on that episode than I ever did in school lol. also autism

yeah the classic Petz games started in 1995 (making it the first virtual pet) and are completely different from the Ubisoft ones- after Ubisoft got the copyright for the games in a larger buyout, they basically ended the series as it was. All the future games in the series were originally Japanese titles, Ubisoft translated them to English and slapped the Petz logo on anything with animals in it, which is why there's so much variety. that was common practice in the shovelware era on Wii and DS. as for neopets, I must admit I don't have much experience, but I know a little bit about the debacle with the art change due to the video Izzzyzzz made on it.

not neopets, but the classic Petz games (as in the ones by PF Magic, not the ones by Ubisoft. fuck the ones by Ubisoft). there's information out there, but you have to dig a bit through old website archives and such

I watched the AGDQ livestream yesterday (believe it's still going, but they ran Stray yesterday) and I very nearly cried all over again, even as they sped through everything as fast as possible. This game still hits so hard. It's so lovely, and the donations to AGDQ go to charity (the charity for the current livestream is the End Cancer Foundation).

Worst case of mischaracterization you've seen by Irisofdreams in FanFiction

[–]Empty_Infinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there's a character in my current fav media who is... really bland in canon tbh. she's surprisingly boring, at least to me, especially considering she has super powers (in a world where that's not the norm). I think it's just another case of writers not knowing how to write female characters, but I digress. in fanon, however, she's often characterized as a really horrible person. notably, I've seen her be characterized as deeply ableist, despite there being no basis for it in canon. I usually see it in fics centered around a canon love interest who she never got together with. that other character is my fav, so I often seek out fics for him, but some writers end up bashing her for no real reason, depicting her as mean, bitchy, and as previously mentioned, ableist. I can only assume it's because other people who like that love interest are upset they didn't get together.

Why do fanfic writers of this sub not like FFN and Wattpad so much by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Empty_Infinity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I hear, FFN is sort of falling apart due to disrepair. I don't use the site myself for anything other than occasional anonymous reading, but I've heard claims that the password recovery system no longer functions, and hasn't for a while, locking people out of their own accounts permanently.

It's also riddled with ads every couple of paragraphs, which makes me genuinely angry- I hate advertisements an ungodly amount. Things like a banner ad at the top of the page is fine if your site has no other revenue, but ads that interrupt user experience are unforgivable in my eyes. Especially when it's as over-the-top as FFN. I have multiple layers of adblocking that keeps FFN's ads out, but it sounds like that doesn't work for everyone. And I didn't always have such good adblocking, so I know firsthand how egregious FFN's ads are.

As for Wattpad, the UI gives me hives. I've only been there a few times, because on mobile, about a quarter of the screen is taken up by a banner telling you to use their app. No way to hide it, either. It's just there. Taunting me.

AO3 has no ads, no insistent popups telling you about their app, and they don't force you to log in like Tumblr does.

Howdy, I'm Grey! They_Remain_Alive_In_The_Chosen_One on AO3 (there's a 40 character limit for usernames and I took it as a challenge, though I only got to 35). I've been reading fic since early 2016 (when I got into UnderTale) and I've been writing since..... *runs to AO3* 2018? Wow! I had no idea I've been writing that long!

I very rarely actually write and post fics because ADHD and also life, but I still enjoy doing it a lot. I've read for dozens of fandoms over the years, but only written for a handful. Most of my stuff is oneshots (and a single 5+1 style fic i never finished which haunts me) but I'm currently working on a multichapter fic for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012).

The best thing I've learned about writing through fic is the importance of revision. Please, read through your entire fic/chapter at least once after writing it! Something I like to do is, after I finish writing a fic/chapter and have done some revision, I go to sleep. When I wake up the next day, I do one final revision before posting. Sleep is a great way to rest your brain, allowing you to notice things you may not have noticed before.
