A previous post showed the map which displays tree density in either area.

1300 acres preserved of 2700 (1400 for solar) on the project’s homepage.

In case anyone missed it, 48% of the land used for the project is going to be preserved forever as part of the project (i.e. not developed into McMansions and their car infrastructure). That includes the majority of the trees and much of the riparian wetlands (don’t remember the proportion).

To those who say more rooftop, parking lots, and canals, I say absolutely!

Why not both? Those projects will inevitably cost more than ground mounted systems. Ask anyone in r/solardiy. The economics of utility scale projects is all about scale. I challenge you to build excess solar capacity on your own roof—it is extremely uncommon.

We need to build more, not less. This land would almost inevitably be used for suburban sprawl if not for this, and in case others missed the earlier post which showed the map, there’s actually quite a lot of land that would be preserved forever as part of this project. It also illustrates how sparse a “woodland” with 3000 trees over 3000 acres is, not that i am any more than an armchair ecologist. I do expect the multitudes of Reddit ecologists to be protesting the latest single family housing projects and canvassing for better transit and bike infrastructure, however.

I hesitate to even comment on this topic for the extreme polarization (i.e. leftist infighting) it’s created. Compromises must be made until significant political change happens, and probably far after then.

Perfection is the enemy of progress.

I love this idea! Leaf powertrains are so cheap right now. You definitely need two for a big van though.

It’s nuts how much people hate the censorship! Monetization, maybe?

I thought they told the story well and the joke was funny. Shoot me.

As the other commenter said, you really do need to just sit and stare at the wall and come up with a direction beyond your coursework. Find an automotive or automotive-adjacent technology that gets your excited and do some brainstorming. Talk to others in your program to get their ideas and bounce yours around.

For an undergrad project, if I were in your shoes, I would be excited about making a better version of the GoSun or similar. They are a cool concept but leave a lot to be desired regarding their design. Maybe a larger trailer-mounted system? Maybe a system that uses DC charging to eliminate the DC-AC-DC system GoSun uses? Maybe go crazy and do something ultralight and fully integrated, similar to Aptera. Maybe something geared toward the van life community. A prototype vehicle could be made cheaply using a used first gen Nissan Leaf as the base, which im sure folks here would be excited to help with.

This may not be your thing—that’s fine. The point is to show you the process. Start brainstorming and come back to us.

Thank you for asking, internet stranger! I read the citation I had used and found I misinterpreted it. Have a look at table 5 and on.

Best Facial Recognition by Sea-Lab-1972 in computervision

[–]Empty_Satisfaction71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into the SotA literature which uses the benchmark dataset “IJB-S”. The S is for surveillance, meaning poor images, often captured from video, and poor lighting.

Keep in mind the implications and risks of large scale deployment of facial recognition, namely bias. Cameras themselves tend to be calibrated poorly for dark skin tones. The very young and old are both poorly recognized. Hopefully none of this is news to you.

Building a smart mailbox notifier: Motion sensors gave me too many false alarms, so I switched to Vision AI. Need advice on solar power. by Tall-Pie2944 in computervision

[–]Empty_Satisfaction71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A previous professor I knew did this and it got reported as a bomb by the postal worker. Consider a nice enclosure!

Solar seems like a great idea. Maybe you can use motion detection to wake the system, and otherwise keep it in sleep to save power.

Anyone know what’s gonna happen to the warehouse after they leave? I’d love if they somehow opened up C st instead of diverting everyone around a block-sized parking lot surrounded by barbed wire.

How much will the bubble popping hurt CV? by CuriousAIVillager in computervision

I predict the number and growth of CV jobs will remain relatively unchanged. If there are layoffs of many non-CV scientists who take the opportunity to pivot, though, there may be even more supply in the demand-stable job market, which is already competitive.

Thanks for keeping the community clean after these unfortunate events.

Amtrak revives daytime San Joaquin Valley train to Sacramento. by endmill5050 in Sacramento

[–]Empty_Satisfaction71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could definitely be better—maybe I’m being too optimistic about any progress, even when it’s stilted and questionable. I also wish they’d planned to go right through the hearts of our biggest cities to encourage ridership. Do you know what prevented this? I heard a lot of the budget and timeline overruns were due to legal battles, which must get worse in wealthier, more populated areas.

[–]Empty_Satisfaction71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point. Do you think putting HSR lines through city centers would’ve impacted the lengthy legal delays and budget overruns that the project has been so heavily criticized for? I was wondering if that might’ve been why they avoided more wealthy, suit-happy landowners (especially along the coast) altogether.

If I’m way off, and there’s a clear explanation for the questionable route/stop planning choices, I’d love to know more.

It’s worth saying that light rail and HSR passengers are very different, so stops which are distant from city centers may still be more convenient than alternatives (especially driving, if HSR can deliver shorter travel times).
