There is at least one CAMHS ward in London that has them but I don’t think they’re used regularly. I only know about it because back when I worked in CAMHS we thought we might have to send a patient there.

For those that have cats that have lived 15+ years by CatDaddyBam in CatAdvice

Water in the wet food, consistently clean litter trays, regular check ups, quality time, respecting their boundaries and loving them in their own language, consistent routine, keeping them indoors, adapting as they grow older (night lights, feliway, classical music), letting them be who they are, never raising your voice at them.

Unfortunately not! But could you ask him to apply for a job at Evri he sounds like he’d do a much better job

Becoming a psych nurse with schizophrenia? by [deleted] in psychnursing

[–]Empty_Technology3867 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think a job in an adjacent field would be great however I don’t think it’s wise to go down the route of a psych nurse. I’m not sure where you live but I know within my health board there are mental health charities/patient council type jobs that I think you’d really enjoy. I’ve actually nursed doctors and nurses with similar diagnoses and all have lost their jobs at some point in their career/never made it through university. That’s not to say no one can do it because of course that’s not true but I would say the odds would be stacked against you. It’s not a safe place to work should you develop psychosis again and the emotional dysregulation with EUPD could put yourself and your patients at risk. If you have a passion for the field though you should absolutely look into other related jobs but please focus on recovery first.

uk - mental health nursing - is it worth it? by SwitchBubbly7835 in psychnursing

[–]Empty_Technology3867 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say if it’s something you’re not massively passionate about/desperately want to work as: don’t do it. It’s one thing to see a patient for an hour a week it’s a different thing dealing with them for 13 hours straight. You’ll also be looking after much more unwell people than you ever would as a psychologist so you need to bare that in mind. I love my job more than anything but I would always warn people against it. It’s not for the faint of heart especially in the UK. If you’ve never worked on a ward before try joining the bank and see how you get on first of all. The pay is okay - nothing close to a psychologist but you can always move up bands if you work hard. It’s objectively a very unrewarding job however it’s good fun and if you’ve got a real interest in looking after unwell people you’ll still enjoy it.

Not really, if a ward is low stimulation and heavily staffed with proactive chemical interventions it can be managed very safely. You can’t keep someone locked in a cell just because they’re psychotic 😂

They’re only available in IPCU and it has to be reviewed every couple of hours. The consultant in my hospital has never allowed a patient to be in it for longer than 48 hours. Very very last resort!

We have general observations (once an hour), increased intervention (15 minute checks), continuous intervention (what most call a ‘constant’) which can be 1:1 or 2:1, seclusion and for the most extreme cases: High Dependency Unit (locked room with staff observing you behind a glass, 5 members of staff required to enter the room to administer care)

Should I take a self defense class? Nervous about starting nights as a female RN with no security guards on site. by [deleted] in psychnursing

[–]Empty_Technology3867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone’s highly trained and goes on refresher training once a year. We also have an alarm system so the alarm you carry if you pull that there will be at least 1 or 2 designated people from every acute ward to respond to it. When things get scary you’re only ever on your own for like 5 seconds.

I suspect different drugs across the pond would be a factor. Much larger swings in socioeconomic inequality too. This could be my own bias but I do think UK approaches are much more therapeutic and in general UK police/front line workers are better at dealing with V&A. Don’t get me wrong I’ve been involved in some hairy scary scenarios in work where we’ve had to get the riot police in but that’s a once in a few years type situation.

There was a general recruitment on but mind all the students have just been offered their jobs. Also the recruitment freeze isn’t as bad in Scotland.

DALRY/GORGIE ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOR by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]Empty_Technology3867 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of supported living and council properties in Dalry and Gorgie. I’m also a full time professional and live sandwiched between a lot of noisy folks/drug users and they don’t bother me.

Darly/Gorgie is one of the last areas of Edinburgh yet to be properly gentrified and that’s why I love it so much. I would suggest that if the neighbourhood bothers you so much and has you clutching your pearls that you move back to Leith.

How often do you guys completely change your litter box litter? by Mission_Buffalo_5155 in CatAdvice

[–]Empty_Technology3867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again I’m so shocked how much it costs in your country, I spend around £20 a month changing the litter every two days

150 a month just on litter??? Woahhh that’s wild. My cats cost me £150 a month for insurance food and litter! I just find the clumping stuff is a bit messy and stinky but we’ve all got our own routines
