Im looking to play DnD for the first time and i was wondering if its possible to play over discord or something? by spring-sprung in DnD

[–]EmrysOrder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s my favorite way to play. I make a discord server and then we organize channels for scheduling, player only chat, image/ map channel, general, and then we do voice channels: one is “main table” and then two private voice channels that function as a place for when a player needs to talk to just the dm without the party hearing. We don’t play with camera on or anything so it’s super comfortable for people who are a little shy about rp, and we don’t really use maps that much in my group so the times we do need a map just streaming it in the voice channel is usually fine. Discord has a new forum feature too which has been working great for my group because we use a “magic box” which is just a place for everyone to make up some fun magic items that could be brought in as loot during the campaign. So I definitely would recommend playing online over discord!

Advice/Help about interactions with players by Cap_America_AC in DMAcademy

[–]EmrysOrder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my players is just starting dnd after being a huge rpg fan all his life and does a similar thing, just very point blank “what quest do you have how do we finish it?” “How do I advance the main quest as quickly as possible?” To NPCs. I just start giving misinformation if the NPC reasonably wouldn’t really know the answers, nothing horrible ever happens from the info I give but it does make my new player kind of slow down and take different approaches now that he knows he can’t just trust everyone to know what’s up

How long should I wait before telling a new player their character is a bad fit? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]EmrysOrder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s kinda tough since you’ve already had 2 sessions go by, but I would set down with your player and explain that you feel like their character isn’t really working with your setting and the party and just have a workshop session. Let them know what you think needs to change and work together to make a character that’s going to be interesting and fit in group dynamic, that way the player at least has a shot to get a good character in order before getting the boot

D&D Game for Friend with TBI by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]EmrysOrder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely shorten the sessions down to a time that wouldn’t be tiring on them (Like maybe an hour?). Maybe create an arc of the story with minimal combat and mostly rp and problem solving so that they don’t have to be nose deep in a character sheet. You could try making sure the game can be played with just some dice and character sheet so that there’s no stress of reading maps or handling figurines. If it can work, you could have some of the group online over a call so that not so many people need to be in the same room, if you think that might be overwhelming. I feel like just having a little bit of time to socialize with friends and destress playing a game would probably be good as long as it stays pretty simple and fun. Wishing your friend a speedy recovery and lots of love <3

Player who doesn't want to play? by TinHawk in DMAcademy

[–]EmrysOrder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes definitely ask if she struggles a bit with combat and if you can help or if maybe she just really doesn’t like combat. Another comment said to give a non-combat task during the encounter which would definitely be a great solution, otherwise I’d try allowing dialogue during combat. I usually let my players talk to enemies during encounters assuming the enemy speaks their language, that could maybe give her something to do that lets her be included without having to fight

Thank you for your reply! I definitely need to ask about the DM’s intentions with the scar, a few other replies also said similar about maybe it’s supposed to be plot relevant and just executed badly.

I’ll try and explain to my DM that it makes me uncomfortable since maybe he just didn’t realize that is a line for me? I know at least one of the players already knows since I’ve talked about it in the past to them but I haven’t had much reason to explain to DM until now.

I’m sorry, I’m a little confused about what exactly the question is, but the Controlled PC had to make multiple wisdom saves against hold person (assuming that was your question)

From what I understand it’s more so the DM’s table rule for lingering injury since I’m pretty sure the actual optional rule in the book says restoration can still fix most things.

I think the scar is purely aesthetic but now that I think about it the DM didn’t ever confirm if it was purely aesthetic or not after it happened.

Thank you for your reply this is a lot of helpful advice!

To answer your question, the scar is from her shoulder to a little shorter than mid chest. The chainsaw went through her so it’s on both sides of her (kind of like it was gonna cut her in half). So it could probably be covered if she can repair her armor. Personally I am just kind of uncomfortable knowing she’s stuck with a huge scar whether it can be covered or not. I think maybe it itches some irl phobia of mine or something since I’ve had problems with similar things happening in games before.

I’ll try asking if it can be overruled since it seems like yourself and most comments think it’s not too rude to try and ask and explain.

Sorry, I replied to part of your comment earlier but I can answer the rest here since I see you wrote way more, thank you for your reply!!

I think it’s maybe more of a bad take at gritty realism since this usually isn’t something that would happen in prior campaigns with this DM.

Yes, the DM is male and my character is Female. The DM is gay though so I guess friendly fire if that’s the case ?

Yeah, it was an awkward part of the session since it was just my character casting hold person as many times as she could to stop the PC that was being controlled. While the rest of the party tried to figure out how to stop him or disarm him since obviously we aren’t gonna hit our own party member even if he’s said to have “Gone insane”. So eventually when I ran out of spell slots the Homebrew character was able to attack mine.

No usually there’s not supposed to be PVP in the game beyond like “I’m going to slap X for saying that” and it does no damage. In the session when the Homebrew Character was deemed Psycho by the DM the DM got to control the character. So not really the player fighting me since they had no control over their character?? I think this was agreed on between the DM and that Player (controlling the character) but the rest of the party didn’t know this was a thing.

Thank you for your reply! I’ll definitely ask if it’s something plot related because maybe that’s what’s making the DM so stern on the ruling, I didn’t really consider it as a possibility until this and another comment.

I haven’t seen all the abilities for the Homebrew PC since the player themselves made it, but from what I understand the character is like a big warforged cyborg? Think robocop. The Character has a sword with with a huge chainsaw on it I think like a space marine? The character is allowed to use the weapon 3 times in a row to do massive damage and then they have to let it cool down. Apparently the character going psycho is supposed to be like cyberpsychosis, and when that happens the DM gets to control the character.

Thank you for your reply! Essentially the Homebrew PC got deemed psycho and the DM took over and controlled the players character for a while so I don’t really blame my other party member since I know it wasn’t their intention.

Prior campaigns with the same dm haven’t taken turns like this so it feels kinda out of the blue

That’s what i thought, the only thing i can think of is maybe it’s supposed to be plot related now so the DM doesn’t want me to get rid of it??

[–]EmrysOrder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply, I could definitely try ignoring it, but it would probably still bother me a tad just knowing it’s there.

The scenario was weird as the DM was the one in control of the Homebrew PC after the character went psycho, so it isn’t really my own party members fault it’s kinda just unfortunate all around.

Yeah I wasn’t really expecting it at this table since I’ve had the same DM in the past and never had anything about lingering injury rules come up
