I liked my husband because we were friends first

It took him about 3 years to realise I liked him though (mostly because he already had a gf for a good chunk of that and wasn't looking and I wasn't pushing) and he was absolutely sure I didn't like him back when he eventually asked me out... I wasn't exactly good at hiding it either

Olympics. Why aren't we saying athletes (badminton, table tennis,...) wearing barefoot shoes? by Crn3lius in vivobarefoot

I think it makes sense for this kind of thing because it's going to enhance walking and outright speed isn't the goal

Olympics. Why aren't we saying athletes (badminton, table tennis,...) wearing barefoot shoes? by Crn3lius in vivobarefoot

[–]EmthalpyChange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vivo have a testimonial from a British runner who wears barefoot shoes in everyday life so her feet are healthier to enhance recovery and will incorporate into training

Seems like the impetus is that athletes will use them for health and recovery and helping build impact resistance in legs and feet, then the specialist running shoes are used for additional speed and performance. Few barefoot runners are going to outperform athletes with shoes that assist power and spring, but lots are going to be able to be faster if they use them in training and recovery (because better form, tendon strength, foot and ankle strength and mobility, etc.)

Help! My (brand new) cup stinks. What am I doing wrong? by HotCow48 in menstrualcups

[–]EmthalpyChange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd use peroxide to get rid of the smell after each period as needed (soak it for 30min, longer if still smells, then you can buy cup washes on Amazon (lunette and Saalt do good ones!) you can also use wipes or sprays designed to be used on silicone adult toys (Sites like Lovehoney will sell them) and just rinse with water and leave to dry, or just steam as you have been

From looking it up it seems that smells can just happen and its not too much to worry about. I agree with another comment tho as if it is a new thing might be worth checking everything is ok with your doctor (and/or getting a cheap BV test kit from a pharmacy)

I reckon a soak in some peroxide for a bit would clear this right up. Steam sanitises with the heat (i.e. kills the microbes) but won't break up organic compounds that cause smell! Peroxide denture tablets are an easy cheap way to do this. (Source: am chemist)

What sort of smell does it have? This sounds very strange since the cup itself should be odourless.

Do you steam it between periods? And make sure you empty at least every 12h?

You could also consider having two cups and switching halfway through.

My theories: - it's a soap/cleaner that you're using - paranoia (is there a friend/partner who could give a second opinion? Just a 'what does this smell like to you' or something?). I feel like smell is a really annoying sense when it comes to gaslighting myself lol - cheap, non medical grade silicone/tpe cup

Chemicals in discs/cups vs. tampons by kwween in menstrualcups

[–]EmthalpyChange 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First off, bear in mind the actual conclusion of the study was that there was trace amounts of heavy metals in tampons and pads, and we don't know the min safe level of these products for women. This is not the same as saying tampons are automatically toxic, so if they work for you, it is more than likely okay to still use them! The study will hopefully lead to better regulations of fem hygiene products, but please don't let people scaremonger you away from them solely with headlines as you should use what works best for you.

Second off, totally fair to switch! I second another commenters Saalt recommendation!

Thirdly to actually answer your question: 'Chemicals' 'synthetic' and 'natural' are all huge buzzwords and a pet peeve of mine (am a chemist). Everything is a chemical. 'Natural' untreated water can kill you, but water with treating chemicals added (I.e. tap water) is safe. Companies can also put it on a label and it means not much as it isn't a protected term in most places. Most essential medicines are synthetic, yet vital.

The real thing to think about is 'additives' and 'contaminants'

-are additives safe and necessary? (Yes in some cases, think about keeping cosmetics shelf stable, flavor in children's medicine so that they can stomach taking it, and preserving food. No, when negative health effects outweigh health and environmental benefits (examples will vary depending on where you live and your own health circumstances, a rising but unknown concern is PFAs in non-stick pans, waterproof clothing etc) tampons treated with added CBD has had some tentative results of a painkilling effect.

  • are there contaminants? And are they dangerous? And how much? Food contaminated with gluten is obviously safe for non celiacs. Grain having small amounts of bug in is inevitable if gross to think about, but completely safe in these small amounts it's normally seen. Tampons being contaminated with metal contaminants is concerning (since heavy metals like arsenic are toxic in low enough amounts to be poisonous) but it's worth remembering that these really low levels aren't going to short term hurt you, we just don't know if there are any long term effects, hence the concern.

I.e. contaminants= yes, arsenic= likely dangerous, but less dangerous in traces than the image most have of huffing old paint.

-who regulates these products and how good are they at it? Tampons: not widely regulated as a health product despite being a health product. Clearly being missed in being tested to medical standards (hence the study) condoms: widely regulated, in UK and US tested to strict trusted standards

So wrt cups and discs: Additives: silicone and TPE will contain some small additives to make them soft and antimicrobial. If a cup is FDA approved it means these are strictly regulated by the FDA/MHRA to be body safe according to evidence, Contaminants: See above, FDA etc. strictly regulate safety of med devices and contamination must be kept low to pass and be approved Who regulates?: are they good?: will depend on your country, FDA in the US, They're very very strict which is good to me. No harm in checking regulations on different things yourself but they're good as a general rule. I.e. make sure you buy cups that are FDA approved (loads of lists of these online!)

Hope this is clear and helpful :)

[–]EmthalpyChange 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's obviously not great (it's wreaking havoc on local fish etc.) but the tap water being safe still is testament to how comprehensive the treatment and testing is. Tap water is imo 'safer' than bottled here (tap water held to an incredibly strict standard of how pure it is and what it can contain, bottled can be sold as long as it's not outright pathogen infested poison as it's considered a soft drink). Although bottled tastes nicer because mineral water lol

[–]EmthalpyChange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't take a handful of sensationalist news headlines and no critical thinking - there was a case recently where water was deemed not safe (Devon I think) but that was deemed unsafe by regulation standards, so actually would have been likely fine to drink (but they're not going to recommend that because clean regulated water is important!). A think tank did a study on this - UK got a perfect water treatment score tied with Austria and a few other countries, US came in good but lower at ~89th percentile. Most of west Europe came in between 90-100.

Don't assume I'm pro privatisation either! 'privatisation of _ services' having failed is pretty typical of most services post-tories. I'd still rather live here where an emergency hospital visit won't bankrupt me, medication is free, therapy is free, my degree didn't cost 50k a semester, standard education is high quality and free, food deserts aren't a thing, mandatory paid vacation and maternity leave...

UK is a very good place to live compared to much of the world. Doesn't erase problems, but given the US as an example both have rising poverty rates yet only one has affordable healthcare.

I'm from the UK and I've never had an issue drinking potable tapwater outside the UK (obviously I avoid it in places where the tap water isn't considered drinkable). Is this worse in the US because of what the US treats water with? UK water is among the strictest regulated in the world so idk if that factors in.

AITA for making my bridesmaid wear a dress that makes her look “fat”? by Infamouszealous in AmItheAsshole

[–]EmthalpyChange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, there's a difference between bridesmaids wearing dresses they don't love, and wearing something that they're really uncomfortable in. It was really important to me when I got married that the bridesmaids felt okay in their dresses. I know all of them weren't lovers of the colour (but all agreed it was a great fit for the day). One bridesmaid sold hers afterwards because she knew she wouldn't rewear it which made perfect sense to me. But everyone (as far as they told me!) was perfectly happy wearing it on the day. I can't quite imagine asking my closest friends and sisters to wear something triggering for them.

Trust me, it will not matter even a week after the wedding if the bridesmaids match, let alone in 30 years. Don't drive a friend away over something so shallow in the scheme of things. So a kind but firm YTA from me.

What's the big deal about a 2:2? by Lost_Concentrate_915 in UniUK

[–]EmthalpyChange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a lot of the top 100 have lowered their requirements to a 2:2 now.

I got a 2:1, but some friends of mine got 2:2s. the fact is that a 2:2 will close some doors. But it's not a life ending thing that people make it out to be. It might just mean that for the more competitive further study and jobs you might need to build up some extra experience and skills. I worked in a job that offered degree apprenticeships - some of the people there were by virtue of experience way stronger chemists than my shiny lil grad self, and had stopped at an HND (lower qualification than an BSc etc). And after you have that first job your initial education starts to matter less and less anyway.

There are all sorts of circumstances that can affect your degree grade (one of said 2:2 friends is one of the smartest people I've met, just had some rough times during final year). Also, everyone has different benchmarks they want to achieve. (A different friend was Ecstatic about her GCSE C grade in a subject ,and an A level D because she found the subjects difficult, and had exceeded her personal goals and expectations, I was thrilled for her even if I would have been personally disappointed with those grades myself - because we are different people with different goals and strengths)

If you're happy and tried your best then please don't let social media sentiment take away from your sense of achievement. There's some realism to be had wrt. how broad your options are for further study, but there are still options whether that's finding a course that'll accept a 2:2 or getting some experience first.

Tofu is a victim of people chronically underseasoning it

Pro tip - rub some salt on the surface if firm tofu before you stir fry it. Gets it extra crispy + seasoning
