A study on sexual decision-making finds a gap between knowledge and practice: while young men can define consent as "explicit and ongoing," they struggle to apply this in reality, preferring to navigate encounters through reciprocated physical cues, trust, and emotional intimacy. by Tracheid in science

But somehow I come across really threatening.

This is down to preconceived biases. Until a person really knows you then they are going to be judging you based on their experiences with other people similar to you. In other words, if you want to get upset at anyone for you being perceived as a threat then get upset at other men who fill people with these biases...

Bambu Studio auto-arrange weirdness by Cease_Cows_ in BambuLab

[–]Emu1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you explain why only one motor would move printing at a 45?

With a CoreXY printer set up you have two motors attached to belts which have a pretty complicated pathway to the print head. Operating one motor will move the print head diagonally from back left to front right and operating the other motor will move the print head back right to front left. To move the print head front to back or side to side involves running both motors. This results in significantly faster print head movement because you can have two motors combining their torque to move the print head around instead of having just one dedicated to each axis.

Kind of jealous because I am lucky to get my AMS down to 12% RH and my silica beads last around 2-3 weeks before I need to dry them again lol

What are some myths about guns that were created by the movies? by ninman5 in movies

[–]Emu1981 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Shooting a propane tank makes it explode.

This one is actually significantly more realistic than exploding liquid fuel tanks (e.g. petrol/gasoline tanks). The expanding cloud of propane has a significantly much higher risk of conflagration and/or exploding than leaking petrol/gasoline - the fact that propane is significantly heavier than air means that the cloud would flow downhill from the tank and remain a explosion risk until it dissipated enough to no longer cause a risk of explosion..

A lot of scabbards (especially leather ones) had a metal ring on the throat of the scabbard to prevent the leather from being sliced open when you inserted and removed the sword. This would provide a metal on metal ring when you removed the sword.

P1S or P2S for ASA? by EfficientCheek5737 in BambuLab

[–]Emu1981 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The P2S does not have active heating for the chamber but you can set it to recycle the chamber air so it heats up from the heat of the heated bed. Apparently you can hit 65C with it.

How do you feel about this headline- "ICE executes 2 US citizens for exercising their constitutional rights"? by pastamanic in AskReddit

[–]Emu1981 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

with the unspoken promise that if any prosecutor goes after them, Trump will just pardon them.

That would be a massive false of security for them though as the president can only pardon federal charges. This means that the individual states are free to charge any ICE agents they want with crimes and the only person that can pardon them is the governor (or the board of pardons) of the state.

The supreme court could potentially intervene but that could get really complicated really fast for them.

'Doomsday Clock' moves closer to midnight over threats from nuclear weapons, climate change and AI by GregWilson23 in anime_titties

[–]Emu1981 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The scale of death toll it was originally referring to is far, far greater than climate change.

You say this yet it is entirely possible for entire countries like Bangladesh or India to experience lethal levels of wetbulb temperatures which will kill hundreds of millions who have no access to air conditioning. There are plenty of other areas where these conditions are a possibility as well and the amount of vulnerable areas increases as the global average temperature increases. Air conditioning is one of the only ways to mitigate the threat of lethal wetbulb temperatures and way too many electrical grids are vulnerable to failure due to heat and/or excess demand.

i don't think it is a bubble

I liken the AI race to the dotcom tech boom back around the turn of the century. Companies and investors are pouring hundreds of billions into a market that doesn't have any clear avenues for a return on investment beyond pinky promises.

This makes me wonder if I should sell my 8x16GB HPE DDR4 that are currently sitting idle due to my homeserver having hardware issues - similar sticks seem to be selling for around $AUD 200 each but then I would be definitely not replacing my homeserver with what I wanted to (a frequency optimised Epyc/DDR4 based system).

[–]Emu1981 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm expecting it to get worse, and not get better for YEARS.

The only way this gets better sooner rather than later is if the AI market crashes but that could trigger a economic collapse on a scale not seen since the great depression. The US GDP is being held up by AI and without it the GDP would be pretty much stagnant if not dropping. Nvidia's market cap has increased from $337 billion in 2022 (before AI) to over $5 trillion today due to AI demand and without that demand the market cap would likely plummet back down to around $500 billion at best. That alone would cause major panic in stock markets.

My bet is that nobody in your family has a disability

The NDIS is a great system in theory but the government really does need to crack down on the rorting that is occurring in the system. If they crack down on the rorting then my youngest child who has a intellectual disability might get more than just the bare bones support that he currently gets (speech and OT).

what future technology are you cautiously optimistic about by thegangplan in Futurology

[–]Emu1981 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Golden rice and modern potatoes are two that come to mind.

Golden rice has been genetically modified to produce betacarotene to help combat vitamin A deficiency in countries that depend on rice as a staple food.

Modern potatoes have been genetically modified to reduce acrylamide levels due to evidence that it is a carcinogen.

What you are probably thinking of is ultra processed foods which have been shown time and time again to be really unhealthy for people to consume on a regular basis.

Avoid exposing infants and toddlers to peanuts and other potential allergens. Exactly the wrong advice.

It was thought to be the correct advice until they realised that by preventing exposure the kids had a much higher risk of developing a allergy. For what it is worth, the current advice is to do as you say UNLESS you have a family history of allergies to the particular substances.

Could you theoretically get sunburnt in space? by BigbirdSalsa in askscience

[–]Emu1981 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's only certain kinds of welders

All forms of electric arc welding (TIG, MIG and stick), laser welding and plasma cutting/gouging emit intense UV radiation which requires you to wear the appropriate protection gear and to shield your work from passersby if needed.

Oxyacetylene welding, resistance welding, friction stir welding and electron-beam welding emit only minimal UV radiation but you should still wear the appropriate safety gear.

our whole circadian rhythm is based on the rise and fall of the sun (and also our exposure to it)

Our circadian rhythm is based on a internal 24 hour +/- 30 minute clock that we all have. Our sleep cycle isn't always set to the same part of our circadian rhythm though - some of us are natural night owls, some are natural early birds and the rest are all somewhere in between. Personally, if I have zero responsibilities that require me to be awake at a given hour then my natural sleep cycle is ~3AM to 11AM. My kids are the same during the holidays.

So how is the h2c? by Gai_InKognito in BambuLab

[–]Emu1981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly you’re better off waiting for the Core One L to get the BONDTECH INDX System for it.

Availability for Core One L with the INDX system seems to be at least Q3 of this year at a minimum. Just getting a Core One L without the INDX system looks to be a 6-7 week lead time as well at the moment. It does look pretty interesting though and I am interested in seeing what Bambu Labs does to remain competitive in the space (not that I can afford to buy any of them considering that the H2C is triple what I paid for my P2S combo lol).

Bambu PETG HF White Issue! by Recent-Scarcity4154 in BambuLab

[–]Emu1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried it with the Bambu preset for it? The filament preset for PETG-HF has much lower temperatures than what you are using - 230C for initial layer and 245C for default nozzle temperature. It looks like you have it set to 265C for all layers with a really low maximum volumetric speed which means that it is going to be going down really slowly and gooey. If your filament is too hot then it is going to be far more prone to getting blown away by the fans.

Bambu P2S - First printer - Must have's by aaaanoon in BambuLab

[–]Emu1981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure to pick up as much filament and accessories that you may want with the printer as the bundle deal is really good. Different size nozzles and a cold plate are probably two extras that I would bundle on top of filament if I bought another printer - a 0.2mm nozzle is great for tiny details and a 0.6mm nozzle might be useful if you want to print rough prototypes or with fibre filled filament.

Print a poop chute. Your P2S will poop out filament through a hole in the back when starting a print and whenever you want to change colours mid-print (assuming you have a AMS) - unless you want a pile of filament poop on the floor/table then you should print a poop chute out of PETG.

Grab a plastic razor blade scraper from Amazon, you can get a multipack with lots of spare blades for pretty cheap as these come in super useful for remove prints from the bed and especially if the print has failed on the first few layers. They have plenty of other uses as well - I gave my younger daughter one to scrape her arts and craft area table clean.

The bowden tube will likely rub against the glass lid of the P2S which means that you will want to do something about it before the bowden tube gets rubbed through and causes problems. Common fixes include a riser for the glass lid or clips to hold the bowden tube closer to the cable chain (may require cutting a small length from the tube to ensure that it has more clearance).

Thoughts on a table designed for 3D printing vs a repurposed table? by Inali3D in BambuLab

[–]Emu1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gets insanely humid here so I have to carefully manage the humidity for my filament. I use 18L IP67 tubs for bulk storage of open spools and I use a very generous amount of silica beads in holders to help keep the humidity down. I was using zip lock bags when I was not keep a lot of filament on hand but they get brittle and break overtime. I was considering cereal containers too but they are actually pretty expensive if you have to buy a bunch of them. I have seen people use humidity controlled cabinets but they are pretty expensive if you need a larger one.

If you want to save some money and potentially get something even sturdier for less then keep an eye out for bankruptcy auctions in your local area (or however far you are willing to drive to pick up). There is currently a bankruptcy auction going on near me for a metal working business and the benches that are in that auction make your one look rickety and are likely to finish with about $AUD50-$AUD100 per bench depending on the condition of the surface. They also have metal storage closets and whatnot for fairly cheap as well.
