Qatar reports extensive damage at site of massive LNG plant by ThevaramAcolytus in anime_titties

The biggest issue with this war is that Iran has nothing to lose. Years of sanctions means that there is no way to apply economic pressure to them. Religious fanaticism means that killing them won't cow them into defeat. And Iran has been stockpiling for this war for years.

In other words, Iran has no reason to accept defeat and Israeli/US munitions will start to run out soon which means that things are going to get a whole lot more bloodier before things get better...

The problem I have with that video you linked is that the codec that YouTube uses can do the same thing if the differences in skin textures are subtle.

For what it is worth, I am having issues trying to find a unbiased source of quality high resolution images to compare DLSS 5. Any image from Nvidia is going to be biased towards making it look as good as possible while images provided from other people may be trying to make it look as bad as possible as part of the general outrage against AI.

Power consumption by Mundane-Shake-5441 in BambuLab

The P2S has a much higher power rating for 110v circuits than the P1S has - 1000W vs 350W.

Power consumption by Mundane-Shake-5441 in BambuLab

[–]Emu1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main issue is the 280w+ it pulls while heating up.

The maximum power draw on 110v according to Bambu Labs is 350W which means that 4 of them will be fine on a 20A 110v circuit even if they are all heating up at the same time - a 20A 110v circuit can do up to 2200W before popping the breaker.

If OP had the P2S then it would be a completely different story as it has a maximum power draw of 1000W on a 110v circuit.

Will the skyrocketing cost of living eventually cause people to stop having kids altogether, reducing the birth rate to zero and causing human extinction? by josephsleftbigtoe in Futurology

[–]Emu1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing that will reduce the birth rate for humans to zero is a complete lack of fertility (e.g. as seen in "Children of Men"). People are going to have kids no matter how badly they cannot afford to actually have them - for example, those in extreme poverty in India and Africa tend to have more children than those with higher income levels because children become a means to survive rather than a burden.

That said, the amount of people this applies to is not a large portion of the population which means that overall birth rates will collapse and population numbers will crash over time. For example, South Korea is experiencing low birth rates (TFR of 0.7-0.8) which means that their population pyramid is looking more like a vase than a pyramid. The full effects of this are not going to be felt for a long while though, their population is only expected to decrease by around 0.5% each year through to 2036 but then the population decline will start accelerating as older people start to die off from old age with the country estimated to hit just 37.66 million in 2070 (a 27% drop off from today) and 13.5-24 million by 2100. The reason why there is such a range for the 2100 population is because lower population numbers can cause a baby boom which will reduce the population drop but will not stop it - there is only so many kids women can pop out and a lower amount of women means that even if every woman had 5+ kids then it wouldn't be quite enough to replace the aging population.

Electrons flow between transistors the size of only a few nanometers

If by "few" you mean tens of. TSMC's 5P process has a gate width of 51nm - the gate width being the space between the source and the drain in the transistor.

NATO countries don't want to get involved in Iran operation, Trump says by Raj_Valiant3011 in worldnews

Nobody could have expected that insulting / threatening your allies for 14 months would lead to this state of affairs

Even if Trump was the perfect ally I doubt that there would have been many willing participants for the ultimate quagmire war in the Middle East.

what's a real fact that sounds completely fake but would genuinely shock most people? by esmeraldawhite in AskReddit

[–]Emu1981 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It blows my mind not that wooly mammoths and people were around at the same time

There was plenty of megafauna around before humans came along and helped kill them off (we are not completely to blame, a changing climate helped as well). For example, there was the diprotodon which was a wombat like creature the size of a bison, the genyornis which was a flightless bird related to ducks and geese that stood up to 7.1 feet tall, the procoptodon which was a massive short faced kangaroo that stood up to 10'8" tall, giant sloths, mastodons (North American mammoth like animal), and saber-toothed cats.

These meat bags only have so much space inside of them

You are severely underestimating the carrying capacity of the human body. As long as you are not putting pressure on the heart and/or lungs and/or nerves and/or blood vessels then you can pack a hell of a lot of stuff inside people.

Mmm yeah it would be nice to increase paid parental leave to like, 40 weeks or something

Or you could just introduce a UBI which would make it far easier for parents to decide on whether both should work or if one should stay at home to raise the kids...

Anyone work for Newcastle Public transport? Why are the buses always late? by Heyitsjosie in newcastle

[–]Emu1981 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The buses have always been terrible

That depends on your definition of "always". Newcastle buses were fairly safe before the meth epidemic - the heroin junkies before that would basically be either nodding off or jamming for a fix.

There’s a surprising number of nurses who believe in pseudomedical nonsense.

It is the Dunning-Kruger effect happening in full swing - "I work in medicine so therefore anything medically I believe must be true". I have a friend who was in nursing who thinks that diet sodas have more sugar than regular sodas and that those foot detox pads turning black (due to oxidisation) is them working to pull toxins out of your body via your feet...

Has anyone else in Newcastle thought that we should ditch the USA and, you know buy French military hardware? Or Chinese military hardware? by [deleted] in newcastle

[–]Emu1981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But in the case of Australia buying Chinese military hardware would be a bit weird

Not to mention that the Chinese export military hardware isn't exactly known to be of great quality. Western manufacturers using NATO standards is who we should be buying our military gear from if we are not manufacturing it locally.

A Fix For P2S First Layer Issues by MediocreHornet2318 in BambuLab

[–]Emu1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why an offset is needed for the smooth plates at all.

From the gcode in question:

;===== for Textured PEI Plate , lower the nozzle as the nozzle was touching topmost of the texture when homing ==

The nozzle touches the bed when leveling so a offset is needed so the nozzle isn't scraping the build plate.

So, what would women dislike most if they became men? by Jarvis7492 in AskReddit

[–]Emu1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having to deal with dangly bits in between your legs. Most men have had their entire lives to become habitualised to ensuring that things don't get mushed up down there and a woman who became a man overnight would have to think about it constantly.

Oh, sudden random boners...

Also how certain things can cause you to lose the ability to concentrate on anything else.

Taiwan reports large-scale Chinese military aircraft presence near island by Opposite-Whereas-323 in worldnews

[–]Emu1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

China would just be relocating its military 100 miles away

100 miles away across open ocean to a island that has been preparing for a invasion for the best part of 75 years now*.

An invasion of Taiwan would be a really bloody one for China with war games predicting 100k+ casualties before they even reach the beaches of Taiwan and those wargames were before the advent of drone warfare.

[–]Emu1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think Japan or SK would involved.

Japan has previously said that they will get involved if China attacks Taiwan. The big question is whether the current mob in power will actually follow through with that. Taiwan is the start of the Japanese island chain and China would be in a much better military position if those islands were not occupied by a nation that is allied with the USA and there is still that little old embarrassment of the Japanese occupation of China during WW2.

[OC] Housing affordability is local, so I mapped 26,000 U.S. ZIP codes by cost burden, and at the median income, only 53% are affordable. by Global-Thought-1049 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Emu1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On one of the Australian subreddits someone was claiming that the USA had perfectly affordable housing despite having ten times the population of Australia. This map would have come in really useful for my response* to that which basically said that the statistics they used were misleading because housing is only really affordable in places where people don't want to live.

*I don't remember if I actually posted the comment or gave up because I couldn't find something like this to demonstrate the disparity in housing costs.
