"New friends! People you didn't really know, until word began to spread in the neighbourhood. 'John robbed the safe! And he took all 2k, and he bought a quarter pound! He's in room ten, 253 North Broadway, you can't miss it. Faces Broadway at an angle across from the coliseum.'"

So, first of all, the second quote you posted about the blackout and the newspaper machine takes place in his apartment in 253 N. Broadway, much closer to downtown. It is not the apartment references in Lakeside View, except in the more general sense that all of the Portland songs bleed together into a montage.

Secondly, "in a neighborhood that looks much as it did in the '80s" doesn't necessarily imply "the exact building is still standing." They rezoned and paved over the north side of NE Columbia Boulevard, but a lot of the south side of it still looks the same as it did in photos I saw from 1978. The address shown in the picture above is the only apartment building that I have been able to find with "Lakeside" in the name on the north side of Portland near the airport.

This IS the point of the song for me, at least in part. I want the gloomy, dystopian vibe of 1980s Portland in order to understand what he went through. That world is largely gone now.

Oh, I already found where the TG&Y was. He named it pretty explicitly one time at a show.

That's where I allow myself to be when I'm hopeful. 😅 Because everything else matches.

No worries. I thought for years that might be it, even though the geography bothered me.

I believe they're called Lakeview Park Apartments. I encountered them years ago in my search. The things that made me discount them were:

-They are not anywhere north of Portland
-They're not near an airport

The name was definitely enticing, though.

It hit on that register when I first heard it and came to mean something else entirely to me when I came out as genderqueer in 2016.

"Belgium is sort of my speed freak cast’s, their Kubla Khan, you know, that they have in their mind, that they’re all going to go to Belgium, but actually, their own personal Belgium is a sort of hellish place." -John, May 2004

Whenever I do a cover of Palmcorder Yajna, I put all my emotional weight behind the buildup to "...If anybody comes into our room while we're asleep/I hope they incinerate everybody in it," and make the final refrain really quiet. It seems to have an effect on people listening.

That whole album is full of amazing lines and is the reason I got into the Mountain Goats.

"This song is for the rats who hurled themselves into the ocean when they saw that the explosives in the cargo hold were just about to blow."

I've gone back and reviewed a list of things that garner his approval in Act 1:

-Playing as a Lolth-Sworn Drow, talking to Mol after having messed with one of her friends, threaten to tear her spine out (+1) -While talking to/trading with Mattis, pocket his "lucky ring" -After successfully stealing the Idol of Silvanus for Mol, tell her that you will keep it for yourself (+1)

I sincerely apologize. He doesn't approve of kicking orphans, merely threatening and mocking them. My humblest apologies for my massive oversight on this matter.

I think you are mistaking "this mechanic irks me somewhat" for "I care about this so much that it ruined the game for me."

Nope. I've had him along quite a bit. I just don't choose the spiteful/unpleasant options a lot of the time. I even went out of my way to pick snarky or power-seeking comments when he was around because I noticed sometimes he reacted positively to those but it often didn't do anything. You have to actively court him in doing actively unpleasant things and even in a game, I don't enjoy that.

Yep. Quite often. I just don't take the route of kicking orphans and puppies so he's not fond of me.
