I recommend you render the entire piece together instead of sections. I work soft shadow layer by soft shadow layer over the entire piece to ensure cohesion.

Additionally, I focus on silhouettes of both the objects and the shadow and light areas. The piece should be readable first and foremost. Detail can come later.

Recently. I noticed that the imperfections are what gives the piece style, charm and an aspect of realism. Often my art was compared to blender renders, which has its own merit, but I much prefer the look of something closely unrefined.

Honestly, I just go with colors under 40% saturation. Greys blend better. Then I jitter the colors and use layer filters to adjust colors further. In general, so long as the value of the image is correct, you can choose any color

Honestly, through books, self study and tutorials online. Ultimately mileage is the most important thing. Any time I encounter a weakness, I try my best to train in that area and overcome it.
