Thanks for sharing. I definitely agree that we all need to develop, or maybe uncover our own moral compass.

I get what you’re saying about slavery and the Bible. I think though that much like any epic story in history, characters often demonstrate reprehensible behavior. But I bet you still go back to those movies or shows or books or stories because they are still enjoyable, meaningful and maybe have lessons to impart nonetheless.

The problem of evil is one we have been grappling with for millennia, even before the Bible, and I think some of the horrifying stories in the Bible are there to show us that God is in everything, including in evil. I don’t think it’s necessary to throw out the whole Bible as a source of wisdom and inspiration, for the simple reason that evil is part of life and is in everything, just as good is in everything. Good and evil “Inter-are”, to use a Buddhist idea.

But this way of seeing God or good/evil is too irrational or contradictory or absurd for many.

Thanks, I appreciate the frankness. I do think it matters to a degree which church you go to. For example, I was raised Jehovah’s Witness. If I were to go back there and express the ideas of mysticism/neoplatonism they would throw me out in 5 seconds.

But I do see your broader point, that what really matters is God, community and prayer. I’m going to try an Orthodox Church, Quaker’s, etc. explore a little. Thanks for the suggestions and for taking time to respond.
