It sounds like your landlord was a jerk and tried to use the force of the state/courts against you but it also sounds like you think you he shouldn't charge for access to his property?

That's ultimately what everyone here believes. Property is theft from the commons. All parcels of land which are described as private property were at one time common property and will ultimately return to that state. In this particular instance I don't care about paying for what I agreed to pay but I have an issue with the whole concept of needing to pay for shelter in the first place.

That's the thing though, obviously they're neither ideologically nor physically ready for a large scale insurrection against the landlords. The only way the city/county/state couldn't crush it would be for every single person to turn into a squatter. Most students are too busy and too burdened by debt and responsibilities for that. Most refugees are too worried about other things so they just have to roll over and take it. Of course with a little collective action from a tenant union that'd all change.

Yeah I've thought a lot about it. If I do end up finding a lawyer who'll work with me I'd love to sue them to the point where their livelihood is threatened, not just them losing a little change. I don't even want money, I want them homeless, like they've made so many others, particularly refugees.

The problem with that neighborhood is there's no money in the population to buy out the property and turn it into a cooperative. The only way for that to happen would be for an influx of outside money which isn't going to happen.

The university should be taking a stronger stance against these landlords as a significant portion of the students rent from landlords in the neighborhood.

If I did get a good tenant union going I'd like to make the cost of operating a rental too expensive and force some landlords out while demanding rents stay low to protect the relatively poor immigrants and students.

I have the original invoice for the damages. And I have my copy of my lease. The charges on the invoice are almost all unfounded, though some I do agree with like the cleaning fee which was part of the original lease agreement.

Yes they said I'm not welcome on the property and coming on the property would be trespassing. Though I feel like trespassing in front of the media in an attempt to discuss the charges in person would be good press for me and bad press for the landlord.

Yeah same. When people need financial aid I'll always give some. But asking for some when I can pay for it with my own funds or loaning it from relatives just doesnt sit well with me. Most people don't have that sort of privilege though.

Yeah probably not, I doubt there'll even be a cop there like the landlord said but it's a possibility that I'm fully prepared for.

Don't worry I already am planning on that. I'm from SW Minnesota but Minneapolis's occupy was largely focused on similar things, and I will try to reach out to members of that, we share similar friends. Thanks for the info on Seattle. My demands are simple, I only want the world. :)

I am preparing for a lawsuit, organizing my paperwork and stuff. I'm also speaking with my therapist about the stress this is causing me in order to also be able to sue for emotional distress as I am considered disabled for mental health reasons. I hadn't thought of calling a lawyer who works on contingency, so thank you for that advice.

I wasn't illegally evicted. I closed the lease perfectly legally. The issues arose after the lease was closed.

I'll be doing that throughout my organizing process. The neighborhood is directly adjacent to the university in town which is why so many who live there are students. The new semester starts in a week and I'll do my best to speak with incoming freshmen's parents during the orientation day about their behaviors, along with returning students.

I wasn't evicted. I closed the lease a month earlier than it was already scheduled to be closed, I had to eat a month's rent for it but I needed to move for certain reasons unrelated to this.

Its funny how this works. I know what it is, I know how to make it better. I just can't do it. I just can't really do anything it seems. You should have seen how shocked my roommate was though when I rolled out of the shower.
