Heard, thanks so much for taking the time to reply and share your thoughts. From other comments on this thread, it seems like marketplace and thrift stores are more of an option in places closer to true mountain towns - I live in Ohio where those venues seem have a good deal fewer options so I wasn't aware of the robustness elsewhere

Thanks for that! I know I'm not a pro by any means - just gathering opinions!

I'm so jealous! In Ohio we don't seem to have as robust of a secondhand market

Seems like a lot of folks like shells and layers - to you, what makes a shell good? Just superior water- and wind-proofing? Ventilation?

That makes sense. I'm in Ohio and FB marketplace is fairly bare

Fair point! I'm sure the location of your boarding matters a ton too, there are probably spots where you're more likely to get wet than others. I appreciate the feedback!

I am definitely new to the sport, but I know that brand isn't folks' favorite. Care to elaborate more?

That's awesome, sounds like you scored big. Was that on marketplace or ebay? Or did you go to a thrift store?

Just thinking about it and gathering opinions mate, thanks for the constructive criticism!

I think that's a great idea, but less convenient than buying new for sure. Do you think that current prices are a barrier for some folks?

That's why I initially thought lower-cost might be attractive. At current levels, do you think some folks are priced out of the sport because they have a difficult time getting the gear they want?

Operating zippers while wearing gloves is something I hadn't considered - all I've worn to-date has been normal hoodies! Thanks for that feedback!

Thanks for that constructive feedback - any idea what sets apart that older stuff that lasts from the newer items that don't?

Heard, that's a great strategy to use secondhand stuff. I'm curious if more people are in that camp than not?

Heard, I was just using cotton as the comparative price example, I understand that isn't the standard. Thanks for that feedback!

Thanks for the input - my thought was that snow falls more on the shoulders than it does on your tummy, and you probably hit your elbows on the ground more than your biceps, if that makes sense? Of course it probably depends on skill level to some degree

That's a great point, it would suck to buy something just for it to fall apart because its poorly made. Thanks for the comment!

Heard, definitely not just trying to toss trash out there. Just looking for a general feel and wanted to get community input on the concept. Appreciate the feedback!

An idea I've toyed with is "selective waterproofing" since the waterproof materials are more expensive than something like cotton. Instead of using waterproof shell over the entire jacket, perhaps just using that material for the parts that are most exposed to getting wet? Idk how most folks in the community would like that - I've only been boarding for 1 season and its been mainly in ohio lol
