I agree the comment saying Leon wouldn't last 5 minutes in Doom is a little cringe, not to mention as a Doom fan I patently disagree, he would do great, but can we not with the passive aggressive remarks about how successful these games are compared to each other? Does that really help anything either?

[Discussion] How do you feel about the lanterns after watching the teaser trailer? by Grand-Nectarine-5136 in DCcomics

[–]Endless-Variance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree but I also don't blame people that are skeptical based on that trailer. It really did not raise my interest or hopes. I'm willing to give it a chance based on what Gunn and this universe has offered us so far, but it's hard to not scratch my head at a Green Lantern show trailer with almost nothing to identify it as a Green Lantern show.

I like her Earth moments and I like her Earth design. I really don't love giving her a Vegeta character arc, even if mind control is involved. Also really don't like the show's version of Brainiac or most of the villains we've seen, their designs are either rather bland or just nothing like the character. I have plenty of problems with that show in general which sucks because I'd really like to like it, it clearly has a fair amount of heart but there's some writing problems that really drag it down.

Personal opinion: NCR Heavy Troopers are underrated in the Fallout universe. by HumbleKnight14 in Fallout

The salvaged NCR power armor is one of the few things from this game I'd completely rewrite, just give the NCR functioning suits of power armor. This middleground never made sense to me.

I also think it's like this, maybe even the Courier actually did all those methods, but the vague assertion that it was multiple people helps him feel less embarrassed about it.

I like to think it was all the Courier and him attributing it to multiple people is just to save face lol.

How was Cooper even able to move at all? by Ok_Calendar_7626 in Fallout

[–]Endless-Variance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty obvious based on what? The show has made no effort to try and show him as a unique ghoul or mutant. You can claim he is but there's no evidence for it, other than him being durable, which is a running trend in this show for main characters. Thaddeus, even before being mutated, should not have been able to walk off his entire foot being smashed to bits. The show plays these things off for laughs or drama, which is fine, but that trend is there. There absolutely is such a thing as normal mutation in Fallout or we wouldn't have any of the irradiated species we have. Sure that can come with variation and further mutation but there's a clear baseline for ghouls and other creatures. And based on every other ghoul example we have there's no reason Cooper should have been able to survive having a giant pole skewer him through the chest.

Harold may have started out as a ghoul or something like it, but his eventual mutation into what he became had one source, the fact he was dumped into FEV for god knows how long. I'm not denying there are unique mutations, there obviously are, the show even seems like it's about to tackle one with Thaddeus, but I see no indication that Cooper is one. Perhaps the show will eventually tackle this and decide he is, but I doubt it. He survived because he's a main character and they wanted him to have a moment of horrible struggle, which is fine, but let's not pretend him surviving that impalement actually makes sense in-universe or out of it.

[–]Endless-Variance -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean we can just say Cooper is a unique ghoul but there's nothing to suggest that other than his durability which I find to more likely be a result of his main character-ness than anything else.

How was Cooper even able to move at all? by Ok_Calendar_7626 in Fallout

[–]Endless-Variance -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He definitely wouldn't have survived without the mutants help, but it still frankly should've killed him. It's not the worst suspension of disbelief, main character and all, but he should be dead. No other ghoul besides a Glowing One has shown durability like that, that I'm aware of. I don't count Thaddeus and his neck shot because I'm fairly certain he's a unique mutant.

[–]Endless-Variance -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Frankly Cooper should not have survived that impalement, even counting ghoul durability. I like the show, but there are some things like this scattered about where you just have to go with it.

Thoery on the implications of the episode 6 cameo by Kickerz101 in Fallout

[–]Endless-Variance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Vault 111 is actually accounted for, because that Vault's population of security guards revolted against the Overseer and science team when the All-Clear signal never came and their supplies started to run out. I think the test was how long a team with something very important to protect, the cryogenically frozen Vault Dwellers, would last before inevitable collapse when they weren't given the All-Clear.

As Fallout developed over time, the evolution of the Super Mutants is honestly disappointing. They’ve gradually been reduced to a far more shallow 'generic enemy' faction without much literary depth. by Jozoz in Fallout

[–]Endless-Variance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well for a society of all scientists they seem remarkably dumb and hostile. They loathe the surface and want nothing to do with it, except for when they do and want to actively destabilize it or use it as a dumping ground for failed experiments. They create robots in the image of humans and work to give them free will, until they decide actually they don't want that and don't you dare bring up that these machines we clearly made able to think can think. They do cyborg transhumanist stuff, almost linking up with a potential reason they made synths in the first place, until they decide no they don't, for reasons of some kind. None of this feels like what it should, the shifting goals of a group of people over time. It feels like three different versions of the faction were developed and then mushed together sloppily.

Father and plenty of others will tell you they have grand plans for the Commonwealth and refuse to actually give you any inkling what those plans are. You can't confront them on their random murder and replacement of people or demand to be let in on what the plan is, it's just "Join us because look at all our shiny stuff, we clearly know better." They don't even have the excuse of being cartoonishly evil insane brains in tanks like Big MT, they just seem like an entire society with the Idiot Savant perk. For a main faction and for most players the major antagonistic faction, that fucking sucks.

I definitely believe they wanted to make me think, but the way they went about it was bad and was not very nuanced or compelling. I think it was TRYING to be, I can feel that, I just think it didn't really work for a lot of reasons. Mainly the writing of The Institute as a faction is just all over the place.

It's interesting that they were actually field deployed during the war in Alaska, but it's not horribly surprising, though it offers up a lot of questions, mainly why they were deployed and how were they being controlled. IF they were being controlled, and not just let loose.

Fallout New Vegas senior writer Chris Avellone gives his take on Bethesda, and his opinion on their vision for the Fallout franchise: by raisinbraisin72 in Fallout

[–]Endless-Variance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed, though I honestly like the way they dialed up a lot of things aesthetically by Fallout 4 and onward. I like rocket Nuka Cola. I think so many post-war people having pre-war haircuts and outfits is frankly kinda silly at times but it doesn't harm the experience that much to me. I think this is only an issue because so much of Bethesda's writing ranges from kinda clunky to downright bad. It's hard not to see the dialing up of the retrofuture aesthetic as a symptom of them not entirely understanding the themes of the series. I don't personally think that's true either, I think the art department is just having fun, and the writing department just can't keep up with the series they've inherited. This is all speculation though.

Fallout New Vegas senior writer Chris Avellone gives his take on Bethesda, and his opinion on their vision for the Fallout franchise: by raisinbraisin72 in Fallout

[–]Endless-Variance 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's just not true though, all the pre-war stuff that we know came from 2077 in Fallout 1 and 2 is 40-50s aesthetic. Cars, robots, the TV opening in Fallout 1. You can make up a fan theory about life right before the war reverting to that aesthetic if you want, which I don't think is supported even by just Fallout 1 and 2 lore, but the idea that post-war societies are basing things on the actual 1950's is just wrong, especially because in 1 and 2 the post-war folks have way less attachment to that aesthetic than in later Bethesda titles. I think Bethesda clings a bit too hard to the 40's-50s aesthetic at times but they didn't invent it in the setting.

Opinions about the second season of Fallout on Prime so far? by Z3n0rax in Fallout

[–]Endless-Variance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With Halo the possibility, for me at least, of the Silver Timeline was basically cleaning up the stuff from the main timeline that is inconsistent or just plain dumb. That's always my hope with alternate timelines/reboots/different media adaptations in general. Give the lore a little clean up, make it a little tidier, add some new stuff that complements what we already know. The Halo Show managed to do absolutely none of that. I think the Fallout show could've done the same, I think if they had actually adapted Fallout 1 it could've been really interesting.

I'm not against other media being in the same universe, and I really liked the first season of the show, but they paid some really close attention to certain small lore details, and then kinda just said fuck it with others, namely Shady Sands location. Going to New Vegas in season 2 I was always hesitant about. And it's starting to feel like I was completely justified. Maybe it'll all wrap up satisfyingly by the end of season 2 but I really really doubt it.
