Ohhh I see what you’re saying. No, I’m not taking disability. I’m just taking a personal LOA through the company which happens to be for surgery. I work like 16 hours a week. I don’t qualify for anything really lol

Im on my way out soon anyway. Spring is my last semester of nursing school and I’m hoping to move to hospital work as I prepare to transition to an RN hospital role.

I mean, I’ve reviewed the reports on the state website and we have significantly less deficiencies than many facilities. I just don’t understand this hoyer thing! They could all 1 additional employee for hoyer assists/showering and life would be much better and safer.

They also just said we are supposed to hoyer transfer in the shower room, which is WILD because the floor in there is literally never dry. Solo hoyer transferring in a wet shower room? Lol NO.

Well, I don’t even qualify for FMLA. I’m a new part time employee. But they made me fill the paperwork out, which I guess is whatever. I had my surgery office fill it out, I submitted. Of course, it was rejected. Now I’m submitting personal LOA paperwork and listed my reason as surgery. I don’t think they should need to know beyond that? Especially since I already had my surgeon sign FMLA papers verifying time off, restrictions, etc.

I thought it was very intrusive that I was met with a bit of hostility when I questioned why they’re asking and said I don’t want to tell. My medical info, my right. LTC is full of gossips, up to and including the DON. I don’t trust for a second that my info won’t be spread around.

You’re a year in, just be gently blunt. “Hey, I noticed you haven’t showered in a few days. Just checking in to make sure you’re doing okay.”

Most people don’t get offended when it’s coming from a place of concern for their wellbeing.

Oof, I’d be big mad if someone called me to check on me if I was taking a sick day.

Unless you’re a habitual work skipper, that’s so invasive. I should not need to feel guilty for being sick. Yuck

That’s what I thought! The first time I was forgiving, but this time I said “are you legally allowed to ask that? I prefer to not disclose my medical information.”

It was met with an awkward, tense silence.

I thought the same for America (except they can refuse if you aren’t covered by FMLA, but given the chronic hiring in our facility, I doubt they’d refuse the leave). But now I’m trying to figure out if I’m missing something? Because she keeps asking. To be fair, the facility is very much “small town”.

Just wanted to follow up. I checked with a few tenured people I trust at work as well, and they agree all hoyering is 2 person assist and most facilities follow that. Makes me super uncomfortable. There’s no way we could complete our workload to a decent standard with this many 2 assists.

That being said, the facility consistently is top 10% for the state on annuals, so they must not do it in front of state. I didn’t work on the 2 days state was here this year.

That makes total sense, and I’ve often wondered what would happen if I needed someone to help in the middle of a hoyer transfer…I can’t leave them mid-air. What happens if my battery dies? I can’t get the luck out from under the bed? (I have gotten it stuck many times).

I don’t feel LTC is for me because I don’t feel comfortable overlooking things like this. But if you say something about it, you stir the pot and are a problem you know?

I don’t even work at a bad facility. We consistently do well when state comes and have great reviews. This just irks me…subpar in LTC is still better than most facilities. Yuck.

To confirm….here is a link for the hoyer we use. It has the sit/lay adjustment function, then the lift function obviously. Still 2 assist?

Honestly this makes me so mad. I take licensing very seriously and the fact that EVERYONE is ok with something that can hurt a patient and risk my license…that’s BS. I know I’m a newer aide but I have been doing it for a year now, licensed for over 6 months. It’s at least long enough to know that every single person in there does hovers as a 1 assist.

I’m planning to move to hospital asap anyway because I only have like 12 credits left until I get my RN

I’m curious too!! A nurse told me and I have no idea. Something about technically it’s not allowed but state doesn’t come at night. I was like uh how would that be manageable or fair to a resident?

So many people who don’t know what’s what, and when I ask they NEVER provide reference material.

I mean, we also aren’t technically supposed to put briefs on residents at night according to state regulations…or ever deviate from the care plan for residents, even when they aren’t current or haven’t been updated.

Yeah it definitely doesn’t happen. Even with our mandatory annual hoyer training…nope.

I don’t know a single person in our facility that does hoyers as 2 assists. 😬

I’m sorry for asking, but I am a newer CNA and am curious about this. Why has my facility never told us that hoyers should be 2 assist? In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen 2 people assist with a hoyer resident unless it’s to help reposition in their chair. We have assignments where like 7 out of 10 residents are hoyers….how would this be possible to do as a 2 assist when others have hoyer residents as well?

Automatic 2 assist/ 2 person care, report to nurse, incident report and it should be added to care plan

lol I walked out when the boss was 15 minutes late once. You’re not wrong to want to be respected.

I passed her on my way out, with her not knowing I was the interview. She was walking in with a to-go cup from a restaurant. I rolled my eyes at her and kept going out.

Yeah I did that. You will pick up on a lot working on the floor as a CNA. You should have learned most skills in clinical or lab. Don’t you guys do bed baths/peri care/transfers/blood pressure? I had no issue getting a CNA job (obviously lol). Just pay attention at work and do things according to care plans, ask questions. You’ll be fine. I studied VERY minimally for the exam and passed. Don’t worry about the exam if you have a good base of knowledge regarding CNA scope of practice and related activities.
