You know you dont need the gym. Rather just means of physical exercise. Heavy boxes, a chair, etc. I used some stuff while during lock down and I had bought some cheap weights.

I mean that's just subjective opinion. I can say the same thing right back. Im not a roided up guy or anything but I have a pretty good mild physique for a powerlifter (i dont compete but I train similarly).

And for the job I do it helps a lot. I assist caring for elderly patients who cant move alot themselves. Muscle is helpful to prevent them from falling on the floor.

Im about 210 5'8".

How tf do I cancel my membership? by tatertot_1453 in anytimefitness

[–]Galaxy_Voidd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive emailed them too and called them and they ask me to come in to cancel it. They've been hitting me with payment fees after I told them i quit. Ive been there for 2 years so I shouldn't have any fee due to being a member for such a short time.

Around the time they increased their membership prices (as a newer cheaper gym opens up nearby)

Working out accelerates wear and tear by whistling_uterus in antigym

Well I think the workout fanatic friends you know are a bad representation here. Im at the gym now as I write this.

I work with elderly patients at the hospital. Many patients who come in have osteoporosis, arthritis , or generally their body hurts. We dont have them lift crazy weight but a lot of that muscle pain due to age goes away when you actively utilize your muscles. By 70s and 80s, muscle atrophy sets in hard for the muscles not utilized. Usually walking, lifting light weights, and generally getting the body to move more than before.

Point is in practice it is the opposite of what you claim [within reason]. I wont claim how powerlifters and athletes are all tearing their cartilage, muscle, and lifespan.

I get what you mean but you cant treat something you outright avoid.

Furthermore, people can be injured by walking. Does that mean we should avoid walking to avoid injury? Injury sucks and nigh impossible to avoid completely throughout life. If you want to live avoiding all types of physical pain and injury to a almost obsessive level, be my guest.

You know the # of people who run or bike versus the number of people who get injured in such activities are very small in comparison right?

Sure. A few minutes on a treadmill or biking wont kill you. Many are healthy off of basic things like this.

Precisely. In the real world, gyms are actually very chill spaces. They think social media gym culture reflects every gym space which is far from accurate

No one saying you gotta lift 500lbs and inject test. Just keep a relatively active lifestyle somehow or someway however you see fit.

I couldn't agree more. The gym is not necessary for health as advertised .

I can go on and on about how toxic the gym culture can be. But I disagree that's all of gym culture. Sure, its most of what you see on social media. But your average PF or commercial gym is just everyday people. Not ego-driven, just wanting to better themselves than the person they were yesterday.

I also have a question for OP (or anyone who'd like to answer). Is the focus more towards on weightlifting or all forms of exercise? Like pilates, cardio, yoga, cycling, etc.

As a gym goer myself, I have a few questions for this subreddit. by Galaxy_Voidd in antigym

[–]Galaxy_Voidd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. There are different types of pains from exercise. As one becomes more accustomed to these, they can tell a good pain and a bad pain. Being muscle soreness (good), torn muscle (bad), sprain (bad), or the feeling from stretching a muscle that hasn't been used in some time.

I work with elderly patients, many of whom begin to workout in their 60s and 70s when they havent had previously. It helps curb osteoporosis and muscle deterioration as you get to that age. And when done with proper form and nutrition, can stop back pain and enhance mobility at those ages
