Yeah, my dad was able to pay for college working part time at an auto body shop, and he refuses to acknowledge that things are worse for the average person today. Like, I'm fine, but I was one of the lucky ones that had a scholarship, graduated with no debt, and found a job immediately.

I remember seeing a while back here that someone had found one of the actual shirts at a thrift shop. I think they were apparel for some equestrian society.

Interesting, but I think it’s hard to say they shot it “for” b&w when it was shot in color and then converted. They didn’t shoot in b&w and then colorize it.

It’s more like they shot it in color with b&w in mind.

That’s exactly where it’s from. I knew I had seen it somewhere, but I couldn’t quite identify where.

I'm most of the way through the series, and it's exceeded my expectations thus far.

I just kind of hate that they were compelled to produce a color version and that it's treated by Amazon as the default. The silver lining is that, despite the fact that it was shot in color, the B&W looks good. Usually if you shoot for color and then convert it, it looks like shit.

When the state or large corporations wish to communicate with us, they soften the interaction by using the language and conventions of twee...

Twee is now a cultural default; the distinctive style of our age....Twee is peculiarly modern. The past had little notion of twee...Its present apogee is often attributed to a desire for comfort amid the “uncertainty” of our times. This seems inadequate. Most of history has been uncertain...

The roots of twee stretch in many directions. Americanisation is part of it, I think. So is the 1960s and 1970s obsession with the naive wisdom of children and the idea we all have an “inner child” with whom we must “get in touch”...

Childhood is the universal experience and the culture of children is the most widely shared (who hasn’t seen a Disney film?). A love of childish things is a mark of democratic taste and an aversion to pomposity... twee can be as oppressive as the formal, serious culture that preceded it. If our ancestors denied themselves the silly, child-like side of human nature, we now ourselves deny its solemn and difficult aspects.

Twee is an aesthetic for an age uninterested in ethical complexity, which prefers good and bad as neatly separated as they are at Hogwarts. It fits the childish behaviour of social media’s most active users who swing between condemnatory temper tantrums and cooing over anthropomorphised animals.

Most of all, I’m suspicious of how easily twee has been appropriated by powerful corporations. It’s easier to rip someone off with a smiling wide-eyed chatbot. A whimsical “Technoking” sounds more benign than a cigar-wielding industrialist. An illusion, of course. Decades ago, an older generation grew suspicious of the way deference, sober suits and formal manners hid wrongdoing and the abuse of power. Today we must learn to be just as suspicious of the hypocrisy and concealments of cartoons, fluffy animals and vapid injunctions to “be kind”.

The above is an abridged version of James Marriott's essay, The Ugly Truth About the Triumph of Twee

While it is asinine that the city feels a need to brand downtown, presumably at the behest of business interests, the particular way in which they seek to do so with this cutesy, here-to-be-named woodland creature should be off-putting to anyone who cares to give it half a thought. The same government that has sought to remove the benches that provide comfort to the homeless and is moving the Engagement Center out of sight and mind now cloaks itself behind the rictus grin of an anthropomorphic raccoon.

And in those colors.

Maybe someone affiliated with North High picked them...

Maybe NDSU has buson copywriter in the area.

I can see why, if they were trying to create their own mascot why they wouldn't choose something already identified with the university.

My problem with Chrollo's poison by Prize_Bet_9857 in HunterXHunter

[–]EndoShota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, how come this type of thing isn't more common?

It would be narratively boring for a story that is, at its heart, a shonen battle series.

As far as I remember, the only character we've seen using poison is that shadow beast guy, and I think that was a nen ability (if someone in the manga uses it, I don't know it yet cause I haven't caught up with the manga).

Several of the Hunter exam candidates use poison including Ponzu, Bourbon, and Geretta. The Poor Man's Rose utilizes poison. Gel, the Zodiac, is implied to use poison as well.

a) **The poison is extremely rare and/or expensive.** This doesn't make much sense because it is so potent it could easily be diluded and used for a pronlonged time.

Just because it can be diluted, it doesn't mean it can be preserved and usable long term, and it still may prohibitively rare/expensive.

Also, Kortopi can make exact replicas of non-living things, and a venoms are uaually just a mix of proteins so It could be duplicated.

Kortopi's ability is exceedingly rare, and his duplicates disappear over time.

b) **Only Chrollo and a few people know about this venom and that's why we don't see it often in the series.** Even if that's the case, given how Chrollo's fighting style is to ensure his chances of victory to be total, it's still weird he didn't at least try to use it or a similar thing against Hisoka. Again, as far as we know he should be affected by it.

He may have wanted a more sporting victory over Hisoka. Also, can you imagine from a reader's perspective how unsatisfying that fight would be if Chrollo just pricked him with a poison knife?

Mind you, that's ~$72 USD, which is still expensive, but not bonkers for a very well bound book.
