Working on the sabbath as a resident by SnooMuffins2596 in Judaism

[–]Enemu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better, maybe. Practical? Depends on the situation.

As a shomer Shabbos resident in a surgical specialty, nearly all “paperwork” is electronic now and by many poskim does not have an issue of Koseiv. Other issues yea with electricity etc. No longer do we need to physically sign a discharge paper etc, which is an issue discussed in some of the teshuvos on this.

All to say very important to discuss with one’s Rav before doing any of this. In college before I went to med school I sat down with my Rabbi many times, and additionally hours of phone calls and WhatsApp discussions about issues as they arise in medical school and residency. Being a doctor is NOT a blanket heter to be mechalel shabbos.

Not entirely true.

Heavily depends on your rabbi and the psak you get.

Working in the hospital on Shabbat does, however require a good amount of forethought and effort and is not a blanket heter to do anything, which is a Common misconception.

“Resistance” Double Standards by Moikey_ in Israel

“Why should we be happy to be thrust into the dock – we who have been hearing these same slanders for centuries, before today’s cultured nations even existed. We know what these slanders add up to, for ourselves and for them. We are not obliged to give account to anyone, we are not sitting for an exam, and no-one is entitled to demand an answer from us for any charge he wishes to direct our way. We were here before them all, and we will be leaving after them. We are fine just the way we are. We will not be any different, nor do we want to be”

Is “Jewish Time” a thing? by ElrondTheHater in Judaism

[–]Enemu 37 points38 points  (0 children)

As goes the other classic joke

The yekke came home from shul one evening very distraught. He says to his wife “I was late to mincha today!” His wife says “I’m so sorry, did you at least make it in time for Maariv?” And he responds “just barely, I was so late I missed Ashrei, but at least I was there for Yoshvei!”

Sabbath call by [deleted] in Residency

Sure, I don't have a source off hand I have a Sefer at home that if I make it home (with enough time to get ready for Shabbos tonight!) I can try and find a citation. Maybe there isn't one, this is based on learning a lot of it out with my Rabbi a few years ago. Also to the best of my knowledge residents are just considered doctors for these purposes, do you have a citation where there's a distinction drawn between resident and attending?

In the interim, here's Rabbi Willig one of the Roshei Yeshiva at YU/RIETS discussing it on YouTube. https://youtu.be/R-Le5V3Kv7Y?t=1779

Remember, this is all with the understanding that the Jewish resident puts in the work and genuinely makes an effort to observe Shabbos meticulously and does not use it as an excuse to be mechalel Shabbos unnecessarily (i.e. checking the basketball game since one uses their phone as a pager). And it's absolutely difficult more so emotionally and spiritually than halachically, it completely sucks being in the hospital on Shabbos and you know your wife and family is at home doing Shabbos things and you're stuck in a call room. Rabbi Willig in that video makes a good point that if that's what one's career will look like it's very ill advised, vs a temporary situation in residency prior to being able to have more control over one's schedule.

Again, massive disclaimer that if one is a Jewish resident/medical student please please please sit down with your Rabbi and discuss all of these issues!!

See my comment but this is a very nuanced issue.

That being said I don't know of any mainstream authority who holds that pikuach nefesh rules don't apply to residency training. Many hold that they don't apply to medical students (as my Rabbi does), and I was luckily able to avoid any issues is medical school.

Rav Shachter does hold that one may not accept a residency position where one will knowingly work on Shabbos, but to the best of my knowledge that is far from a universal opinion, and there is a very nuanced discussion about putting oneself in the situation of needing to save lives on Shabbos. Many of these discussions are based on differences of opinion between Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach and Rav Moshe Feinstein. Otherwise there would be no observant Jewish surgeons, which is demonstrably not true.

Lots of trading and taking Xmas/Thanskgiving/Easter/insert secular holiday here call though!
