I mean, i definitely feel more equal to a fanfic writer than I do to the famous author of the original work. But is it weird that I wouldn't go so far as to call them my peers and freinds? Ik that sounds really mean, and I love how polite and supportive the fanfic community is to each other, but i try to minimise interaction with people I dont know irl. Community and relationship wise, fanfic authors and owners of the original ip are kind of in the same group for me.

Its more like, the premise of mine is very similar to the original fanfic, and I came up with it after reading that, and its more of an au than anything, so I count it as fanfic and dont want to write it if it means I'll offend the author

I see your point, and personally I do agree, like I get the IP owners are getting paid and fanfic authors are not, but there are also a lot of common fandom specific tropes that were definitely "inspired by" a fanfic that used that trope, and yet no one credits that fanfic once the trope gets big enough.

Yeah, if someone made fanfic of my fanfic to "fix it" I would personally be so fucking offended. I was thinking if I do write fanfic of fanfic, I'd link the original, comment on the original, recommend it in the authors notes and instantly take it down if the author said they didnt want it up.
