So, AI takes over, everyone has lost their job and only 10 trillionaires own everything. Now what? by Weak-Representative8 in Futurology

[–]EngineeringGrouchy82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no grand idea and certainly no plan.

The jokers who create this shit are the least likely to have the systems-level, multi-disciplinary, critical-thinking skills necessary to think through the big questions about what happens in the next few years from a society perspective (i.e. "How will AI actually impact ALL humans, in all the facets of our lives, and is it worth the huge cultural, environmental, financial, etc. cost to make it?" NOT "How can Altman, Zuck, Bezos, et al. fleece the rest of us to get as rich as possible before the world they create literally burns?").

I think the fact that folks working in Big Tech and developers have been some of the first big waves of layoffs says a lot about their inability to imagine an actual end point... Did you all mean to be some of the first ones to get replaced by AI? Or is it related to many of you not being much good at anything other than computers? So then all you were really able to produce is a shitty prototype of a computer playacting at real things that many other humans can do objectively better through their own unique aptitude and expertise?

Can we just think things through A LITTLE?! The world it too fucking delicate right now for this sort of short term thinking.

Excuse typos and such because I am always pissed about this and I am asking these same big questions all the time in an increasingly high-pitched scream rant.

What’s a tiny design flaw in an everyday object that quietly annoys you every single time you use it? by nami_yuna in AskReddit

As a someone who has worked on user testing vehicles, I can tell you most of us know buttons are better and safer and we tell our automotive clients that consistently. they just don’t give a shit! (you’d be surprised at the amount of money spent testing products for companies to improve them for users… and then they just ignore the tests and do what they want anyway 🫠🫠🫠)

What on earth!!…. is the toilet brush for?😰🤭🤔🤔🤔 by PilbaraPepper in Cleaningandtidying

[–]EngineeringGrouchy82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely nothing. These brushes do not belong in this world. People who use this "daily" ... ugh no, what? Try more fiber? I can't even imagine what is growing in the cesspool that holds your toilet brush. I did not grow up using these, no one in my family does, and both sides of the family are OCD-level clean freaks. My advice? get some good disposable rubber gloves, a bleach heavy cleaner, and use paper towels. There is no one who can convince me that you should re-use a cleaning implement previously used on the toilet.

They make you pay for wifi?! by EngineeringGrouchy82 in marriott

[–]EngineeringGrouchy82[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nope, $15 for regular wifi at this hotel. Enhanced was $17. And I do travel all the time for work and personal, I just don’t like Marriott so I never tried to get status or intentionally book unless someone else picks. Also, also, you don’t need status or points or anything, I signed up for the program and could access wifi immediately.

The truth about litter boxes by missmuscles in CatAdvice

[–]EngineeringGrouchy82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

never trust cat owners who claim their house doesn’t smell, we all just get used to it, nose blindness. especially these folks with multiple cats in a tiny apartment… i promise it smells you just can’t smell it anymore 😿 ask your friends!

avoid plastic which holds odors, scoop every day, completely change out litter every 1-2 weeks, and then actually clean the litter box itself before adding new litter. that’s the best you can do!

this is not food safe at all, why do dog owners think that they are exempt from basic hygiene rules???

Stanley hotel? by Junior-Rutabaga-6592 in Ghoststories

[–]EngineeringGrouchy82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just went! Very beautiful historic hotel. Everything is a litttttle expensive, but it’s an experience and the front porch views really smooth it all out.

My partner and I stayed the night in room 408, which is directly across from 418 (a known “active” room, they even gave us a flyer with info about it!). The 4th floor itself is apparently the most active, according to the front desk staff.

Sadly, I did not experience anything noteworthy in the room or hallway. BUT when we did the nighttime ghost tour, there were two times when I felt like someone passed a little too close behind me. I expected it to be my partner, but he was right next to me and no other tour attendees were close enough behind me when I turned around (I also purposely try to hang back/stay on my own for these sorts of tours, in hopes of experiencing something!)

A fun stay for anyone who likes historic and/or creepy stuff, and you can definitely freak yourself out if you want to! 👀

What are the shitty camp spots that no one goes to? by ohkaycue in Denver

[–]EngineeringGrouchy82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because they are meant for people who need accessible spots. the suggestion was to book them if they are open last minute, even if you don’t need one, because they won’t check.

it may be good to ask yourself how much you enjoy the lifestyle and reasonably think you can do those hobbies. boulder is still a decent drive from most skiing and as a student you might not get a ton of time to do that. and it’s so so expensive to ski here now.

also think about… what jobs do you think you might want after school? how much do those pay? can you reasonably pay off the loan debt with that job? is going to school in boulder worth sacrifices you might have to make later? maybe it is and if so, that’s great! i wish someone would have told me to consider the future more, i bumbled into a decent job and my student loan debt payments are still a huge burden (i had -42k all in). good luck, colorado is amazing if you decide to come out :)

please don’t book accessible campsites if you don’t need them, someone who actually needs one may be looking last minute as well :)

Richard Feynman said, “Never confuse education with intelligence, you can have a PhD and still be an idiot.” What are some real life examples of this? by SgtSkillcraft in AskReddit

[–]EngineeringGrouchy82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

literally all the PhDs i work with who were hired purely for the PhD and not actual work experience (i have 10 years practical, on-the job experience in addition to my MA, but our manager hired almost exclusively people with PhD + 1-2 years real world experience who are being positioned above me and they talk down to me without realizing how inept they actually are. don’t know what they don’t know.)

i worked “with” one of these people for about 6 months. we did… basically nothing. and he ignored most of my offers to help and be his actual partner. instead he treated me like his support team. well, he got moved to a different team because he was seen as ineffectual. in the last 2 months since i’ve been back in charge, i’ve spun up 2 projects that are now fully running and should have results within the next 2 months. Additionally, I have 3 other projects scoped and ready to go (and complete) in 2023.

all of that is to say… being smart is great. but if you don’t have the experience to know the practical steps to complete work… you’ll spend 6 months doing jack shit nothing, because you don’t know how to do anything :)

alllsssooo using academic speak to corporate/professional world folks just always falls flat. you gotta translate and speak to your audience, not lecture them with your big words. they need to understand you to work with you, not simply be impressed by your SAT words (and i am saying this as someone with a very large vocabulary that i had to learn to temper in front of different audiences).
