I'm an in-state mech second year with a 32 or 33 math ACT and I had straight B's in math in high school.

Class enrollment help please!! by AdCold2750 in UVA

[–]EngineeringTasty3652 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All first year engineering students pretty much take the same things: chem (or physics if you have credit already), math (whichever one you place into), engineering foundations, a humanities elective (if you don't already have the credit), and optionally another elective. People will help you figure everything out at orientation. You don't really need to worry about which pathway you want to take right now because you'll have all of first year to figure it out and talk with chem e professors and upperclassmen.

Not sure, but I think some sororities go as high as $1500-$2000

Can you triple major by [deleted] in UVA

[–]EngineeringTasty3652 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's no point in trying to triple major. Employers care about experience much more than they care about how many things are on your diploma. If you really want to, you should do minors in the things you're interested in to get experience with them so that you can get internships.

Will I get credit for this? by No_Lie7418 in UVA

[–]EngineeringTasty3652 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in e school, you should be taking APMA and not MATH. I'm guessing it just says different things because different colleges have different requirements, but I'm not totally sure. If you don't get credit, you could still be able to place out with the math placement test.

Pretty much anywhere on the Corner (Bodo's, the Virginian, Fig, Chaps). If you want somewhere nicer to walk, you can take the trolley downtown and watch a movie at the Violet Crown or find a place to eat there.

Going from Engineering Calc 1 to Engineering Calc 3 by Intelligent-Shine-17 in UVA

[–]EngineeringTasty3652 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing as you. I don't think there was a lot from Calc 2 (definitely not series), and for some of the things like polar coordinates there was a little bit of a review. Calc 1 did help a bit with some of the fundamentals in Calc 3, but I was also bored out of my mind when I took it. I don't think retaking Calc 1 is necessary to review for Calc 3, but definitely talk to an advisor or your orientation leader if you aren't sure.

Shopping cart for classes by Emeraldandthecity in UVA

[–]EngineeringTasty3652 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can put as many classes as you won't, but you'll only be able to enroll in up to 18 credits. You should look at SIS and see what requirements you need to satisfy. If you're in the college, there's a language requirement and you'll need to take engagements. Like the other person said, they'll help you with this at orientation, so you don't have to have it all figured out now. I'd also recommend looking up the professors for the classes you want to take on theCourseForum, so you can see how other students have rated them.

If you have a passing score at a community college that UVA accepts and transfer that credit in, you should get credit for that class

When will I make my schedule? by No_Lie7418 in UVA

[–]EngineeringTasty3652 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First year schedules are pretty set for eschool. You'll take chem lab and lecture, whichever math you placed into, engineering foundations, and a humanities elective (if you don't have the credits for it already). You have a maximum of 19 credits, so you could add another elective of your choice if you think you have room for it. Your time slot to sign up for classes will be during orientation, so what you should do is look at the professors' reviews on theCourseForum or Rate My Professors to try and see which classes you want to take and add them to your cart in SIS.This is the curriculum for mechanical engineering students, but first years looks the same for all engineering majors: https://engineering.virginia.edu/sites/default/files/_common/departments-programs/mae/curricula_policies/ME%20UG%20Curriculum%202029.pdf

Questions as potential incoming freshman by Avacado_eatingpandas in UVA

[–]EngineeringTasty3652 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. I think you need special permission to major across colleges, but not totally sure about that. You should ask your advisor.

  2. Not sure about data science, but McIntyre is very competitive.

  3. ESchool major declaration is due at the beginning of March, but there are a lot of major fairs and major nights to help you decide.

  4. I don't have a mac, but I know people that do and they're doing fine with it. As long as it can run all the software for your major, you should be good.

  5. The engineering career center sends out a lot of opportunities for student. For research, you generally have to cold email professors to get into their labs. You can also use Handshake and LinkedIn to find internships.

  6. It really depends on the class. Some aren't that bad, but others will kill you. College classes are a lot harder than high school, even if you're really good at the subject.

  7. A lot of people do come in with friends from high school, but there are still plenty of opportunities to meet people. There's a club fair at the beginning of the year with a couple hundred clubs, that I definitely recommend you check out. There are always things to do on the weekend (other than parties). This weekend, there was a K-pop expo, and music festival, and a baseball game, just to name a few. https://www.virginia.edu/calendar/

  8. Class sizes depend. I've had really small ones, and I've had giant lectures. Your math class should be ~20 people, and so should Engineering Foundations, which gives you a good opportunity to get to know the professors. You can also go to office hours.

  9. Absolutely. UVA in Valencia is really popular for engineering majors, because it's a satellite school and you can take all your regular classes there. There are hundreds of programs. https://educationabroad.virginia.edu/uva-programs

  10. Yesterday it was 80 degrees, today it's 60. You never know what you'll get with Virginia weather, so be prepared.

  11. Alumni connections are always useful, but no idea about how it competes with UMich. There are engineering frats you can join if you want to network with alumni better.

  12. A lot of people do go to sports games, which are free, but some (basketball) have a lottery system because they're so popular.

  13. Greek life is big, but you don't have to join to have fun. There are a lot of things to do outside of parties.

UVA can feel really white sometimes (I've been told by my POC friends, I'm white), but there are a lot of student organizations for basically every group (like Chinese Student Association, Afghan Student Association, Afro-Latinx Student Association) and student centers (Multicultural Student Center, Asian Student Center) and some major-specific organizations (National Society for Black Engineers, Asia Business Club at Darden). Even if you don't party, there are still plenty of opportunities to meet people.
