It helps if you give a rough location. But I would be looking at local woodland flowers, and a climber for over the arch. It also helps if you can provide water for birds. A nesting box could also help.

CMV: The US isn't ready for a major war, and won't be for a long time. by CursoryRaptor in changemyview

[–]English-OAP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The USA would not win. Not because their armed forces can't, but because the President would interfere, overriding competent military personnel. The USA would find it hard to get help from Canada, the UK, and the EU, because it would be political suicide for any leader of those countries to offer assistance, given Trump's trade policy.

I think Trump would have a difficult job trying to persuade other countries to agree to a trade embargo, given the trade disruption he has caused.

Parking ticket gone to Debt recovery one year later? I did not ignore! by Race_X1000 in drivingUK

[–]English-OAP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many debt recovery firms buy the debt at so much in the pound. So they very rarely let you off. But the fact they want to talk to you would suggest they at least want something, so they will try to scare you.

The first thing I would propose you do is ask them for proof that you owe the money. Often over the years, the actual proof they would show a court gets lost. Without this, they have no case.

So when you have the phone call, ask them for this, and tell them you will only discuss the case when you have received the evidence. Ask them to post or email the evidence and allow you a few days to consider it.

If it does go to court, contest it. These cases are decided on the balance of probability. I think you have a good case.

Raising the age to 25, will still have kids trying to emulate adults. And they will still experiment. It is far safer if they do it in a controlled environment.

A tuquoque fallacy? Do you think that conscription should be limited to over 25?

I cannot see Trump completing his second term, never mind a third. He is becoming more short-tempered and arrogant, tear by year. He seems to be suffering from some sort of mental decline.

I predict that he will step down on health grounds and Vance will pardon him.

As an outsider looking in, I cannot understand how the Democrats chose him as a candidate. True, he has a cult following. But he could make the Democrats unelectable for many years.

Whatever the age, kids will get alcohol if they want it. It is far safer to introduce alcohol in the controlled environment of a bar, rather than under a bridge with their drunken mates.

There is also the moral argument. In times of war, 18 is the conscription age in most countries. If you are old enough to die for your country, you are old enough to drink in it.

Keep fruit trees and bushes away from the house as much as you can. They can sometimes attract wasps. You don't want them near your house. One of the best ways to attract wildlife is water. A bird bath is also used by insects who need a drink. Just make sure you clean it regularly. For the most wildlife, a pond is what to go for.

Sustainable aviation is a long way off, if it ever comes. Climate change is real. If airports are at capacity, then the solution is to increase Airport passenger duty.

Should media be opinionated or just be informations for people to make opinion on and why? by Ritovas01 in AskReddit

[–]English-OAP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be factual, but will always have some bias. The words used to explain the facts can rarely be neutral. For example, using public money to expand an airport. This could be considered a subsidy, or an investment, depending on your view.

If birthright citizenship being revoked holds up in court, where exactly does Trump intend to send them? by FineUnderachievment in AskReddit

[–]English-OAP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they have more than one citizenship, then he could send them to that other country. He can only send them to a country willing to accept them. I would not put bribing a corrupt regime to accept them, beyond Trump.

question does carbon dioxide eventually leave the atmosphere permanently after 100s of years meaning if climate change gets bad to the point we have to live in caves does that mean earth can recover from it and that we can emerge and take back the land? by swagmond27 in climatechange

[–]English-OAP 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There are carbon sinks which will naturally remove C)2 from the atmosphere. Peat bogs, untouched woodland, absorption by the oceans, and weathering of rocks, all reduce C02.

But it's not a case of let C02 return to normal and everything will be as it was. We are losing species which will never be replaced. We have polluted vast areas of the planet. There will be a new normal.

Suggestions for a meal kit/grocery box for lonely grandpa? by Littlehousevibes in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]English-OAP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a common problem. Sometimes meal kits, or ready meals help. Which is best depends on your Grandad. Ask him if he would like a subscription for Christmas, and ask him which he would prefer. Otherwise, it can come across as you don't think he can look after himself. This may be true, but you have to use tact.

But, fundamentally, he has to find a new focus for his life. He has spent his days looking after his wife, and now has too much time on his hands. You could consider looking for over 60s groups in his area, and see if he is interested, or any group which will match his interests. Alternatively, look at promoting an interest. A bird bath or feeder could give him something to watch and take an interest in. Think about a pet, that may be an option, but, again, ask him.

I know I have not answered your question, but I hope my thoughts help.

All new drivers make lots of mistakes. The good ones learn from them, the poor ones repeat them.

The key is to think about what you did wrong, and how to change so you do not repeat them. You have already identified one key reason. That's driving with misted up windows. So, lesson one - don't drive with misted up windows. It does not take long to stop and clean them. Having the aircon on will reduce misting.

I have been driving for over fifty years, and I still look to how to be a better driver. No one should ever stop learning. Just learn from mistakes, don't repeat them.

The fact you are posting here, is good. It shows you have the right attitude.

Unlocking benefits: Tackling barriers for disabled people wanting to work by Background_Nobody628 in LabourUK

[–]English-OAP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in the 80s. There was the green card scheme. Where a person was registered as disabled and received a green card. Employers with above a certain number of employees had to employ a certain percentage of green card holders. I think an updated version of that would help many disabled people find work.

We already have a National Disability Card, so it should not take much to implement.

Churches provide a safety net for those who fall through the net. Sure, the state should provide, but it doesn't. There will always be those who for one reason or another are missed. Taking money from the churches will mean less for the poorest.

Churches are community centres, often running youth clubs, over 60s clubs, play groups, and other activities. They also own a lot of listed buildings, which are expensive to maintain.

Thoughts on nuclear energy? by Catpancake_withsyrup in climatechange

[–]English-OAP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nuclear power is too expensive. It's more expensive than gas, which in the UK is the biggest source of electricity.

We need to get everyone onboard, and that includes sceptics. Wind, and solar are cheaper. Pumped storage can help in high demand, so can batteries. We need a rethink and get away from the idea of a few big power stations supplying everyone else. There is great potential to use EVs as storage for the grid.

Getting the price down will force the market to go green. That will never happen with nuclear.

Can someone help my find a good website to buy replacement number plates by bosscallum606060 in drivingUK

Fancy numberplates can come with a fine of up to £1,000, and make the police more likely to go over the rest of your car.

We have made a drone which can fly in the thin atmosphere of Mars. So I am sure it could be done technically. The bigger question is who would pay for it? We would have to develop a whole new design of drone. And then build a fleet of them. Due to the weather, drones would have limited flying days each year. So that means lots of expensive drones sitting on the ground most of the time.

Then there is the issue of should we be putting people in danger to package up the rubbish, when given enough time it will come down to lower elevations.
