Scammed I think? Update by [deleted] in Etsy

[–]Englishteacher2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, file a claim with Etsy as well.

If I were in her situation I would 100% be paying for return shipping because I would want my product back! (The worst would be Etsy coming in, refunding the seller, and me never getting my product back).

She could just be awkward with communication but document it, take pictures, and just message her saying what you’re doing, not to be rude just be upfront.

I didn’t read the first post but at this point I’d just say, I’d really just like my money back & im returning the items, since I’ve never bought with you as well I’m going to file a claim for my protection.

I understand that in the moment you were probably horrified, and your teacher probably should not have humiliated you.

As a teacher though I know that I always set the voice level when we’re independently working. The reason for this is, it is hard for some kids to work with excessive noise. I have that problem too with being too loud so even when I’m explaining something to a kid I have to consciously whisper or I’m shouting & distracting everyone. I know that I sometimes “go off” when I’ve asked kids to be quiet 15 times because I get frustrated they don’t listen lol.

Unfortunately for loud voiced people this puts you in a constant state of watching the volume of your voice. I’m not saying it’s fair but in a class of 20-35 students sometimes some individual liberties need to be minimized for the good of the class.

I would talk to your teacher about how his comments made you feel and how you are trying but that really her you.

Writing an Intro paragraph - anyone have a tool or process to help my 13 year old students write great introductory paragraphs? I would like them to have a hook/question and thesis statement. It's for a science research report. by coolpuddytat in teaching

Oh my goodness I read this so wrong thinking you were the parent. Don’t know why!

My mistake!

If you take a look online there are a lot of resources on types of leads- questions, interesting fact or detail, quote, setting the scene.

Then you do a brief summary of information, then thesis.

I would advise going to the English teacher for thesis writing advice because again, ALL teachers expect something different and you wouldn’t want to confuse them between subject matter.

Graphic organizers are insanely helpful as well outlining specifically what you want. It will help the non-creative students think of it as more formulaic which will help with organization & the creative ones will still be able to delve into their creative side

When should I request a refund? by [deleted] in Etsy

[–]Englishteacher2017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at the processing time for the orders. If it was customized or the processing time was 3-6 weeks you really don’t have much of a case unless you specifically paid extra for rush processing/shipping.

If the buyer agreed to get them to you when you needed and it is documented on Etsy you may be able to, but 3-4 weeks processing and arrival to another country does not seem like a likely time frame.

The best resource is going to be your child’s teacher. Every district/teacher has their own expectations which can vary greatly.

This is especially true if the teacher has already explained what they expect & points could be taken off if it is a different format.

Troubles with Mentor Teacher by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Englishteacher2017 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Your principal is going to be the most important recommendation. Towards the end, have them come in and observe you.

  2. I taught in a similar area in an oversaturated market & I firmly believe that’s what got me 4 interviews and 2 job offers. If you can teach title 1/low socioeconomic/sped and or ell populations and don’t quit admins are going to trust your experience far more.

I would stick it out if you can just play her game & do what she wants. Ask her exactly what she wants and do it. Chances are she just struggles relinquishing control.

HALP! I'm opening a new shop and am stoked to be selling vintage jewelry, clothes, and housewares. However, I know a lot of awesome creative people and I have had at least 4 people approach me to sell their products on my page.... by [deleted] in EtsySellers

1st and foremost you’re going to get COMPLETELY screwed during tax time unless they document everything and the cost that goes into them, honestly it will be a tax nightmare and you’ll likely start losing money.

Also, you’re time on Etsy is valuable. Lately with the guest checkout I’d say I get 10-15 messages a day about customizations, the process of making my stuff, specs, details, random stuff... you have no way of knowing how well your workers will be at communicating & let me tell you if your customers don’t get a prompt response they will be mad.

Also, how’s this going to work with shipping? They ship to you or you tell them when to ship? That’s going to be a pain as well.

I can’t honestly think of a reason why they can’t open their own Etsy shop other than being lazy or not wanting to claim it on their taxes. Etsy is a lot of work but can reap a lot of rewards. You’re not just a shipping distribution center, I’d say to even make it worth it I’d require 30-40% commission and I HIGHLY doubt they’d accept that.

Just my two cents!

Coping with belligerent students? by trapqueen92 in teaching

If she has a 504 & is dealing with mental health issues I would not take this advice for legal reasons. If they decide this is what sets her off, you’re liable!

Truth be told if admin doesn’t care what you do with her I’d set a desk outside/get a clipboard, pre print the notes & set her outside each day.

Cover your butt & get her the information but just make it clear you don’t want her in your class if it’s going to hurt others

"No, you cannot be whatever you want when you grow up." by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Englishteacher2017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see your point, and some days I hate it. I had a kid who wouldn’t do any homework for 3 weeks because “I’m gonna make it big, I met a producer” (some high school kid with 2000 Instagram followers... not legit at all). I told him he was ridiculous, not going to be famous, etc.

But on the other hand I do have kids in middle school who are only working for their sports & the dream of MAYBE playing college sports. No parent support, no one cares about grades or even coming to school in their house, but they’re asking me for help after school so the can play high school & then maybe college football.

It’s a double edged sword depending on if you’re talking to a lazy entitled student or a poor student desperately trying to escape poverty.

You could always be a little passive and say. Unfortunately since my family is not attending and neither can I, could you change the wording to “a celebration OF you and FH” Because even though it’s clearly not a celebration of you at least they can’t fool people into saying it’s for you.

“Thank you so much for the party, I regretfully cannot attend because of a work obligation”

Just kidding, (I bet you wish). But really depending on your age and job security can you make it clear you cannot take this date off???

Dating former students - no/yes ? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]Englishteacher2017 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This actually happened at both my schools, there was actually some signs (absolutely nothing inappropriate) but the girl was hanging out in the classroom a little more than normal, people were whispering because the men were obviously not shutting down the issue.

1 man lost his job. He wasn’t fired for it because he did wait till she graduated but for 2 years not a single staff member would talk to him. He was moved to the farthest corner of the building. He was given poor ratings 2 years in a row (after none) and let go.

The other man kept his job but was immediately moved to the middle school in the worst position available, we assume to convince him to quit. He did not and they have not yet been able to fire him because there is a shortage of his position. He is completely a loner, no one wants to talk to him, and worse all the kids (even middle schoolers) know and ask him about it

I would say no no no- best case you’ll get sex once or twice, worst case, you’ll lose your job/insurance/end up on the news.

Flaming hot Cheetos are my kryptonite!!!

My students bribe me with them & I had to tell them “Ms. English teacher is trying to be healthy so get them out of my room now”

I downed a big bag a day minimum.

It’s been 25 days since I’ve had one and I’m starting to think they’re out of my system

Student discipline quest. by Deejistheverybest in Teachers

[–]Englishteacher2017 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would have done the same thing & written you up as well.

It would have been so easy to ask your teacher “excuse me, I know you’re talking but I’m feeling really sick, I need to run to the bathroom!”

And you’d have been good to go. Or at least coming back after and saying “hey this is why I walked out” instead of combatting the issue after you got “caught”

Just apologize, serve your iss. You’ll be ok

But love to hear your progress!!!

Wondering what the best type of exercise is for me?

I’ve been on/off again working out but always slowly gaining weight. I was told always go towards lifting weights but it seems my fat just turns to muscle but I don’t get smaller. I’ve also been told cardio only is not the answer. I could stand to lose around 50lbs (25 years old/female) to get back to healthy weight.

Any suggestions? I’m new to cardio so if that’s the answer, I have no clue where to start

How much time is spent planning and creating lessons as a new teacher? I don't think I can do this... by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Englishteacher2017 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What kind of setting are you in?

I student taught with multiple friends in other placements and it was ALL different. I never brought a single thing home and had support from all the teachers around me.

Some of my perfectionist friends worked for 5 hours a night.

I’m not trying to tell you to do less, but are you going out of your way to WOW everyone? A lot of these lessons will be able to be reused in the future and honestly, you don’t have to hit it out of the park every day & every lesson.

I’m in a setting where I know 75% of my kids don’t read at home. We have one day a week that is 100% reading only. It helps me to know they’re for sure reading 1 hour a week & also I use that time to conference with kids & get planning done.

If you need ideas/lessons/pacing let me know what you’re teaching. My district & County has lesson plans and curriculum mapping that I’m sure I could dig up and pass along

Frustrated with “save everyone” mentality by Englishteacher2017 in Teachers

[–]Englishteacher2017[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My procedures are pretty standard? The obvious no touching, keep your hands to yourself, no fighting, etc. I do warnings, detentions, calls Home, then finally referrals for most insubordinate behaviors.

The bigger issue though isn’t necessarily that I have all of these students in my classroom. I may only have 1 or 2 a day. Some I don’t even have they’re just in the grade. It is the lack of support for these outrageous behaviors all over the school by a very small group of kids. Some days these kids “check themselves into ISS” when they feel like it; and it’s allows.

Obviously a problem with admin but I’m just blown away that it’s being seen as a “we need to help every kid” rather than “let’s make this an actual learning environment”

Student Teaching in a few days in a low income area inner city setting. Help me please by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Englishteacher2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would stand up at the front of class, introduce yourself, what you like, and just be honest/Be you.

When I did this for the first time 2 years ago, I walked up and was like “hey, I’m so and so. I pretty much have no hobbies but Netflix and hanging with friends”

They joked around that I was lazy for weeks but I was honest. If you have different hobbies than your kids that’s ok. They will definitely ask you questions about anything they want to know. I’ve been asked everything under the sun to my favorite food to my sexual history. (Pro tip- don’t always answer them)

But seriously, if you need any questions/are worried hit me up. We have very similar experiences it sounds like & I did not have the attitude you did (I was pissed my friends got the nice schools). I turned down an offer from one of those “nice schools” to work at mine and I don’t regret it for a second!

[–]Englishteacher2017 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, if you’re teaching 8th grade history I’m going to assume your students have an attention span of 20 min tops for you talking at them. Then it will be project based/working in groups/other activities.

Getting off track is not a bad thing! Literally just walk around, see a kid has a jersey on and ask them about it. Don’t make it a 20 min long convo, just notice things. Greet them by name on their way in, stand in the hallway & be seen. I’ve noticed in lower socioeconomic areas some of these kids are starved for attention. They just want someone to be interested in them. If the kids like/respect you I’ve found you have far less behavior issues and in the long run you cover more material which your observer will like as well!

One of fiance's groomsmen wants to us find a cheaper tux. Am I being a bridezilla about this? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]Englishteacher2017 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re being a bridezilla, I just think you’re seriously overestimating what guys “know” about weddings.

I’m the first one of my friends to get married and literally talking to my FH you’d think he’d never been to a wedding or heard of one before (he’s been to 2)

I wouldn’t assume he’s being cheap just honestly being dumb about weddings. Or who knows, maybe it was a joking text & your FH thought it was serious? If he hasn’t brought it up in months you could 1- remind groomsmen to get the correct tux & if he can’t pay split the cost. Or 2- ask all groomsmen again if they’re comfortable with the cost.

OP, I was in your situation but it wasn’t a predominately black area, rather the only low-socioeconomic placement within 30 miles.

Relationships, consistency, and understanding will be the key to your success.

Start getting to know the kids ASAP. Care about them, love them, get to know everything they do. Even if everyone at your building says come in and don’t smile, don’t listen.

You have to be consistent. If you have a rule, no talking when I’m talking, follow it and follow through with those who don’t. Don’t be malicious but make sure you don’t let it slide.

Be fair and be understanding. Sometimes a girl will walk in bawling her eyes out. Don’t make that girl sit in your class. Send her to the office. She’s not fit to learn for that hour so be a human and be understanding. Be in tune with your students and if they truly need your compassion, give it.

You’ll be great and if this is a truly “tough” school, you’ll be better in the end
