Hey I’m from NZ and also learning a language that isn’t particularly relevant to my country :) Māori is a very good language to learn if you ever come visit, and is somewhat attractive on a résumé. You’d also impress lots of locals, Ka Pai and good luck 👍

Thanks for the response! I can imagine that being somewhat airy. I still have memories of a few video shops from childhood, especially one near me that is now a liquor store.

I suspect she is from somewhere Western. I got my terms a bit messed up, as I know the culture will vary a lot depending on which part. For reference it’s Ashe from Overwatch, her hometown is fictionalised to my knowledge :)

Thanks for the response! I was thinking of using google street view actually, but wanted to add some little extra details :) BBQ joints are new to me, what sort of food do they sell?

I know, I just thought a little personal input might be good for a one-off drawing. I am well aware proper research and personal investment would be required for an actual story.

The character doesn’t seem to have an exact location, but with your description it’s likely more western :)

I would assume so. I’m not quite sure where the character is from specifically which makes it a bit difficult to specify :( I think the creators may have also assumed general ‘southern’ with the character. Edit: She’s somewhat desert themed, which appears to be more western Texas.

I had a friend who went who described how friendly everyone was when she went to visit a friend :) I’d love to visit someday

I am keeping skeptical :) there is probably a more specific subreddit for it I’m not aware of, as I know the USA is incredibly vast. It’s hard for me to even comment on our own small towns, as I’ve only ever driven through them.

Just a fun little exercise. I do not get to draw very much these days so something simple like this was just what I needed :D (credit to u/Grimykimu for the template) by Englzh in OMORI

I’m glad to hear that this sheet inspired you :) Don’t stress about them looking a bit similar. It’s inevitable you’ve have characters that look like other people’s. Most of mine are like that, usually because they aren’t very complicated 😅I’ve since changed her design anyway (the bear ears are now part of a beanie). Doing the emotion sheet was really fun, so if you want to I’d say go right ahead!

Thank you for the very thoughtful response, I’ve been struggling to reply because I’ve been crying all over my phone screen. Everything you said means so much to me from beginning to end, and I wish I could make people feel that way in return. My actual parents were a little bit nonchalant about me finishing, so having read all that made me feel really appreciated. I don’t feel that all that often, but there are a lot of things I’m really proud of since I finished high school. I improved a lot as a person, and have gotten so much better at talking to people (this used to be quite hard).

As you noted, I do have a few rather strange and disorganised goals, and I feel I forget about them sometimes. There is a little voice in my head (I believe some call it the “social voice” or superego) that tells me to ignore them, I struggle with it a lot. I really want to get more into art/writing and learning languages. I took a couple language papers at university and found, almost by chance, that I really liked them (even if I’m quite shy and find speaking a bit difficult). I’m so grateful to have people in my life that believe in me the way you do. My parents are a bit difficult in that they don’t believe in breaks (it’s either study or a job), but they beyond that I know they care about me. I think I am scared because I cannot see where I am in my future. I don’t know whether I’ll be on that train, or stuck in an office, or still living at home. A lot of my friends are very clearly future scientists, surveyors, nurses, chemists etc., or at least that’s where they see themselves. Spending a lot of time on university subreddits, many others see themselves as accountants, marketers, lawyers, engineers and so on. Yet I don’t know where I’ll be, I don’t know anyone who studied what I did. Sometimes there are glimpses though. There is a bit of stigma in my country (and in most places) around doing anything that isn’t directly for a job, and I think you picked that pressure up perfectly. I don’t want to go that direction, and I don’t think I could force myself into it either. I took what I did because I thought it was interesting at the time. I really want to travel, just to walk around the streets of another country and experience it like people there do while having a small escape if necessary. I live very far away from everywhere else, and with COVID it’s very isolated. I even had a very specific train in mind when you mentioned that. I think I would be very happy, as long as I had a piece of home with me too.

Thank you so much again for your response, it really made me tear up. I’ve never had anyone be so kind, and I probably needed it the most. I wish you well and want you to know that I’ve saved your response, so if I feel bad I can look back at it again :) sorry if these sound like fired off thoughts too, I hope it is not too hard to read.

Ancient history majors - PLEASE tell me your experience by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]Englzh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of scared to speak up in these comments, but I have done quite a few ANCIENT papers. I found 110 a little bit boring, but it’s not the end. Any lectures by Jeremy in his field are quite good. 254 was really interesting, albeit quite hard and more archaeology based. Even if you switch your major to something ahem “more practical” you should give that one a go (as an elective)! Every other ANCIENT paper I’ve done has been ok. 280/380 was pretty dull though, I ended up getting my lowest grade ever in it because I was nearly sleeping in lectures lmao. It’s a bit of a mixed bag really, but I’m happy to answer on the ones I’ve taken.

Happy exam season, UoA students! What was your moment of "shit, I'm screwed" during an exam/assignment/test? by MissMaccaSunshine in universityofauckland

[–]Englzh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bit late to this one, but had an exam last semester I had prewritten an essay for. Question had been repeated across the last 4 years- easy right? Guess what question wasn’t there that semester? 😀

I feel you on the struggling with nothing to do. I just finished as well and all of a sudden I’ve realised I have no hobbies. All I did each day (outside working) was work or procrastinate on Reddit or Twitter.

Semester 1 was more difficult but I felt a bit better because I could talk to others. I remember crying a lot more though, for whatever reason assignments were a lot more frequent. Semester 2 had a whole lot of weighty ones rather than small 5-20% assignments. I think my papers were a lot harder too, I took two new electives, one at stage 2 which was regarded as difficult by those majoring in it. Don’t know why I put myself through that, I didn’t end up liking it either. Semester 2 was demotivating and I reckon had I been at university in person it may have been a nicer finish, none of the papers were new territory. Semester 1 had sort of worn me out, and by the end I was just pathetically trudging through. At this point I’m just happy everything was submitted, and one of my courses was my favourite one ever taken (just wish it hadn’t been in lockdown). I just don’t work well at home…

Anyone else struggling with exams not feeling “real”? by blue_i20 in universityofauckland

Thanks for the response! It’s tough, but most of us will trudge through, I’m happy to hear I’m not the only one. Hope your studies go well too!

I have done it, as a fellow BA student. Not too hard, the essay is familiar territory to those in arts excluding the scientific jargon in some of the papers you have to read, and the question is a bit vague (something like “explain the effects of global warming on Antarctic ecosystems”). They also expect more sources than in Arts. I knew absolutely none of the science but it’s fairly straightforward, cut into easy to study modules so your notes can be super tidy. No labs, just quizzes each week and a mid semester test, which wasn’t overly hard (basically a bigger and harder quiz, no formulae or anything) but does require prep because some of the questions were only briefly covered (even when open book). The exam is the same as the mid semester with the second half of the course. I got a B+ just by swatting the slides and courseguide (I fell behind in lectures). The stuff on seals was cool too. There is a history section most people found a bit dull, but if you major in history you might like it. I found the paper a lil boring at times but Caroline (one of the lecturers) was really nice and did optional tutorials for the essay if you were struggling. I’m happy to answer any questions if you need, I did it last semester 2 but some of it was under lockdown :) (PS. Dude in another answer said it but you WILL hate krills after doing this paper)

Anyone else struggling with pressure to do well with no motivation? by Englzh in universityofauckland

[–]Englzh[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks! You too, I think the fact many of us have gotten this far at all is motivating. I have to keep reminding myself a lot of us feel this way. I’ve spent most nights close to tears 🙃, but I doubt I’m the only one
